Product History

Eberron Campaign Guide (2009), by James Wyatt and Keith Baker, is the core GM's book for the Eberron setting in D&D 4e. It was released in July 2009.

About the Cover. The Lord of Blades is shown with his homunculi, Hilt and Pommel.

Continuing the Campaign Settings. Settings were short-lived things in the age of 4e (2008-2012). Just one month after the Eberron line kicked off with Eberron Player's Guide (2009) and the free adventure "Khyber's Harvest" (2009) it was now ending with Eberron Campaign Guide and the not-free adventure "Seekers of the Ashen Crown" (2009).

As the GM book, Eberron Campaign Guide was intended as a complement to the Player's Guide, filling in the details and secrets alluded to in the previous volume. Some of these details were totally new to the setting. Because the two core books were so closely coordinated, they didn't have as much overlap as the similar books for 3e, and so there was more room to grow.

Adventure Tropes. Eberron Campaign Guide contains a short adventure of its own, "The Mark of Prophecy". It's laid out in the form that would be perfected in the classic D&D Encounters program (2010-2014), with the players being directed through a series of set-piece encounters.

Finding the Points of Light. 4e settings were all about Points of Light — survivalist enclaves eking out their existence in dark and dangerous worlds. By mid-2009, the Nentir Vale was already being featured in the "HPE" series of adventures (2008-2009) and the Elsir Vale was appearing in Dungeon's "Scales of War" adventure path (2008-2010). More notably, the Forgotten Realms had been massively revamped to fit the new paradigm: the goddess of magic was killed, the Realms were spellplagued, two worlds were mashed together, and a hundred years slid by to create an updated (and controversial) Points of Light world.

Players were wondering if Eberron would also be changed to more closely match the Points of Light ideals and surprisingly … it wasn't. Instead, Eberron appears much as it did before. There wasn't even a timeline change; though rumors at one points suggested a two-year advancement was in the works, the world ended up remaining in 998YK. Eberron's designers and developers said that players interested in metaplot should read the novels and decide themselves whether they wanted to include those events in their games.

Though Eberron didn't become a Points of Light world, it did adopt many of the other assumptions of 4e. That began with changes to its cosmology that paired up the ideas of the World Axis and Eberron's own unique cosmos. Siberys, the Dragon Above, became part of the Astral Sea, and Khyber, the Dragon Below, became the Elemental Chaos. Drawing nearer to Eberron itself, Dolurrh the Realm of the Dead became Dolurrh the Shadowfell and Thelanis the Faerie Court became Thelanis the Feywild. Generally, these changed maintained the heart of Eberron's unique ideas while creating enough overlap for Eberron players to take advantage of general resources like Heroes of Shadow (2011), Heroes of the Feywild (2011), and Heroes of the Elemental Chaos (2012). A few other cosmological changes weren't directly related to the World Axis, such as the introduction of Baator and the move of Xoriat to Siberys.

The other 4e setting update had already been premiered in Eberron Player's Guide: the introduction of the new core races. They continued to be featured in the Eberron Campaign Guide with many more details of their integration into the world. Deva are ancient allies of the couatl who had survived a long-ago war with demons; dragonborn are emigrants from the dragon continent of Argonnessen; eladrin are inhabitants of feyspires that slipped over from the Feywild and were trapped by the Mourning; goliaths are emigrants from Xen'drik who fled the rise of giants; and tieflings are the result of the devilish pacts of Ohr Kaluun. Even these changes weren't really considered changes. All of the new races took on small (but interesting) roles in the world so that the designers could say "they’ve been there all along".

Expanding Eberron. Eberron Campaign Guide includes lots of new details, including: more information on the Draconic Prophecy, a new focus on the Last War, and some attention toward the Cold-War-like tension of the world. However for the most part it revisits existing Eberron material. The geographical focus is on Sharn, the Five Nations, Khorvaire and (to a lesser extent) lands beyond. The dragonmark houses, the gods, and the planes all get some attention too. This means that the Guide revisits 3.5e supplements such as Eberron Campaign Setting (2004), Sharn: City of Towers (2004), Five Nations (2005), Dragonmarked (2006), The Forge of War (2007), and many more. Though some of these books provided more information on their individual topics, Eberron Campaign Guide collects the entire big picture together, making it a sort of five-year anniversary edition for a setting that had been evolving through divers hands.

About the Creators. Keith Baker is the creator of Eberron. Out of the 11,000 submissions to Wizards of the Coast's Fantasy Setting Search, his was the one that made the cut. He's since written Eberron novels and contributed to the roleplaying line. James Wyatt was a minister when he started writing for Dragon in the mid '90s. He was eventually hired by Wizards in January 2000 and has been writing roleplaying books and novels ever since.

And the coding of the entire page seems to be broken somehow. Not sure if that's affecting the price being wrong per the sale period, but not sure how else to let admins know.

This is priced wrong for the Deal of the Day. The regular PDF price is and should be $14.99 (verified upon comparison with the Neverwinter Campaign Setting & others), but the DotD price is $9.99, yet claiming it is 50% off. And in the DotD section, it's adding in a MSRP that doesn't match with the product info... Even if that MSRP were correct, no other DotD I've seen has based their percentage off the highest offered price, but discounted the current sale/selling price...I'd love to pick it up, if it were an actual deal. And previous purchaser Timothy B claims $9.99 was the _original_ price before September's Setting Sale... what's up WotC?

PDF $14.99 DotD $9.99

Deal of the Day
MSRP: $19.99
Deal price: $9.99 (50% off)

Hi Anne,

Please see the reply on my previous post, below. To summarize, the cover price on this book was $39.99 in print. It's normally sold for $19.99, here. So $9.99 would be 50% off it's normal PDF price. It's confusing because during sales D&D products seems to have their original prices change so that they're replaced with what was previously their sale price. I entered a ticket during the last sale, and DTRPG got back to me and clarified this for me. Just thought I'd let you know.

This PDF is usually $9.99 on DM's Guild. The September Settings sale has actually increased the price to 33% off of the printed book's cover price, which is higher than the typical PDF price. Is there any way to get this corrected? Thank you.

Since I can't delete a comment, I'll have to settle for adding a reply. I was mistaken about the original price of the book. The original price seems to get adjusted when the D&D products go on sale. Typically, I see the full price (for the print book), and then it's crossed out and replaced by a price that's 50% of the original. In this case, I saw an original price of $19.99, and the sale price was $13.39. This made it appear that the price was more than the 50% off that is standard. However, DTRPG responded and let me know that the original price is $39.99, and the normal price is $19.99. Thus the sale price was valid.

How usefull would this be for a 5e dm? Is there enough lore and detail to run a 5e eberron campain? Or is it mostly stats, classes and other stuff like that wich can only be used for 4e?

I think you'll like the 3e books better. There are some details, but overall the 3e books are far meatier.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
