A Brother lost is a SOLO adventure for a human or Halfling warrior character of first level. It is a perfect adventure for coming up with a detailed origin story for a character. It is also a great adventure a father can run for his son or daughter as an introduction to role playing.

An excerpt from page two of A Brother Lost:

Read the following to the player:The Gloomy Barrow

You are a young man (or woman) close to the age of fifteen. Over three years ago the king of the land called up all the able bodied men to war. For the past three years a horrible war has been waging far to the south. You have been doing the best you can to help your mother run the family farm and look after your little brother. Times have been tough. Your family is barely able to make it.

Your brother Daniel is one of your biggest sources of stress. He recently turned ten years old of age. Daniel and his pesky friend Luke from a neighboring farm are always running off on ‘adventures’ instead of working. On what turns out to be a terribly stormy night your brother does not return home. He was supposed to be repairing the northern fence line of the farm. After searching for him and becoming drenched you can not find him.

You figure he must have run off to his friend Luke’s house so you go and make your way in the rain to the neighboring farm. You find Luke’s mother who is horribly worried about her son. They are even worse off than your family. Luke is the oldest child in her family. Luke’s very small sister comes forward and says, “Mommy, I heard them say they were going to go to the old scary gloomy barrow and find enough treasure so we never have to be hungry again.” Luke’s mother has a frightened look in her face. Your stomach drops and your heart races, because you know what she is about to say. Luke’s mother says, “Please find the boys. Please!” You reluctantly agree and tell her it is going to be ok and leave for your farm to tell your mother what is going on.

On your way home in the rain you think of what you will tell your mother. She already has so much to worry about. When you arrive home you tell her that you think Daniel and Luke got caught out in the storm playing around the old barrow north of the farm and must have taken shelter inside the entrance to the old tomb. You grab your old hand me down equipment, a torch, and a small satchel with some food in it your mother made for you. Your mother helps you put on an old ragged suit of leather armor that belonged to your grandfather and you head out. Your mother begs you to be careful and please find Daniel and his friend Luke."

I've been playing D&D since the early 80's when it was Basic, Expert or Advanced. I downloaded "A Brother Lost" to play with my teenage son who has expressed interest in playing before but who seemed to lose interest before we could fini [...]

A good solo adventure. I ran through it with my 8 year old son in around an hour. A few hints were given but he understood what he had to do. Hopefully there are more in this series as he wants to play again! [...]

Very good one-on-one adventure for a young new player. I played this through with my 11 year old nephew, and he enjoyed it and wants to play D&D again. The hook was compelling for someone of his age, the regular binary choices and the variety of co [...]

I played this with a 13 year old. It took about an hour, and he was able to get through it without dying, even though he was playing a wizard. It helped that he rolled 5 natural 20's in that hour! I've been playing D&D for a very long time, [...]

The content itself is mostly good, I have no issue at all with the story, but I had several issues otherwise. Namely, the rooms with the skeletons have conflicting text describing things. Some of the text makes it seem like there's 1 enemy, some makes [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
