This is the accumulated wealth of my 30 years playing, designing, and (most importantly) Game Mastering paper & pencil roleplaying games.  I wrote a book that I would want to read, something I could refer back to again and again.  Not every suggestion or recommendation is worth its weight in gold, nor will they be to everyone's taste.  However, I believe there's enough personal wisdom shared to change the way you run games forever... if you want to start Game Mastering like a fucking boss, that is.

Readers will get the most use out of this book if they're running or intend to run fantasy RPGs. Nevertheless, almost half this volume is genre-neutral and should be applicable to science fiction, horror, super heroes, etc.  It's full of general advice on running games, specific elements that should be included, lots of tables for cultists, monsters, magic items, etc., and a brutal-sounding, sorcerous language you may borrow from whenever you need something suitably arcane or foreign.

To wrestle with the dragon and win... that is what I shall teach you!  This book is a door to a parallel world of Game Mastery, a world where Venger Satanis whispers strange and frightening things into your ear... AND YOU HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO LISTEN!!!

If you enjoy this book, you'll probably get a kick out of my others:  Liberation of the Demon Slayer, The Islands of Purple-Haunted Putrescence, and Revelry in Torth.  Eventually, Crimson Dragon Slayer will be added to that illustrious roster.  Thanks for taking a chance on this old demon and his eldritch scribblings.  ;)

(Note: I bought this via the kickstarter campaign, receiving the PDF for free with a physical copy)

When I first received this, I was excited to see it in the mail. Barring the organizational style not being up to par by my standards, and it's near-complete focus on fantasy gaming, I found it to be a great tool, absolutely 100% worth it's space on my RPG shelf alongside several system specific GMing books, and the humorous "Munchkin's Guide to Power-Gaming" (which I use for a quick laugh and to figure out how to curb munchkin-like behaviors as a GM).

The extreme focus on fantasy means it's vastly more useful for fantasy games, but there is a large selection of tips that apply to literally any style of setting or game, even the GURPS Post-Apocolyptic game I'm currently trying to run. Almost none of the information is system-specific despite the genre focus on DnD-Style settings, which is ideal for me as a GM; I am currently looking at running a steampunk/occult fantasy game with...See more

I recently acquired this and was pleasantly surprised. The advice was inspirational and focused on being able to have a good time gaming, and building self esteem, and could be applied to life in general. Now, the meat of it, the tables: The flavor is pulpy and weird, exactly what I look for in a random table. The character backstory building ones give out little unique bonuses that would make for an immediate attachment to a freshly rolled character, and while similar in tone to the ones in Crypts & Things Remastered, predate them by a few years. The illustrations all have a heavy Swords and Sorcery feel, thanks in part to Stephen Poag's artwork. If you want to cultivate a bit of confidence in your game mastering style, I heartily recommend this.

Vengers style and approach is for sure unique but what can a GM want more than to get challenged and to discover new approaches? Despite being in the RPG scene for nearly 30 years now and for having read 1000 and 1000 of pages in Englisch, German and French about how to be a good GM (and a good player too) I don't regret to have supported the Kickstarter of this product.
The tables are very inspiring though, as usual, I will adapt them to my very personal style and create generators out of them. When one was looking for a product to have all served on a silver tablet - well then this is not for him. But for the old ones out there who love to create their own stuff from scratch, and for the youngster who want to follow this most honorable path, I can only recommend "How to Game Master like a Fucking Boss". The least it will do is to joggle your mind and make your creative juices flow... flow in abundance. On my word and honor.

Yeah, and right there in the title is the reason I wouldn't buy it - in spite of the thousands of dollars worth of titles that line my shelves. And the obvious fact that the author does not care seals the (non) deal.

Let me clarify, please. Do I care if gamers find the book entertaining, appreciate its wisdom, and recognize its usefulness? Absolutely. Venger Satanis cares about not only his customers but the RPG hobby in general. Ask around.

Will I backpedal, apologize, qualify, retract, or compromise what I have to say because of an outspoken minority (fundamentalists, swine, politically correct advocates, and mainstreamers)? Hell no! With regards to those people, I won't ever give a XXX.

This statement has no value and simply paints the person as an XXX.

Amen. If you don't like the title, skip past it in searches. His work is amazing though, so you will miss out.

I wasn't expecting an apology. I just find the language does not add any value for anyone, but it does detract for a few.

Maybe the few aren't of any active worth. If you want to restrict your thoughts and actions in any way, following some unquestioned code, you may not be so original as a GM or player.

I read the book cover to cover in one sitting. I really enjoyed the writing style, it wasn't like reading a typical "guide". It was more like the author was sitting in a room with me just talking about how he runs his games. I think that it is great for beginner and veteran Game Masters alike. I would recommend it to all.

Thanks, Bradley! Glad you enjoyed the book. Let me know if and when you read through it a second time. I have a feeling that readers will get a little more out of it each reading.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
