Borderland: Into the Borderland

ADD TO WISHLIST >

This adventure is set in the Borderland sector of the Trojan Reach.

The players are contracted to deliver a cargo of technical equipment to a remote settlement on Iilgan, where they discover a team of Border Guard personnel working with the locals to improve conditions. It becomes apparent that there are several such teams on the world. Whether the characters think this is a god idea or not, they are soon drawn into a chaotic local situation, in which the Guard team represents not only the sole force for law and order in the area but ultimately the only hope in the face of a natural and man-made disaster.

The early stages of the adventure see the characters travelling overland to deliver their cargo and interacting with the Border Guard personnel in the town of Onsler Rapids as they carry out the second part of their contract – teaching the locals and their allies how to operate the equipment. The nature of life in the outback of Iilgan is gradually revealed.

The characters then become involved in a series of crises that beset Onsler Rapids, beginning with a search for missing personnel and rapidly expanding as severe weather strikes the town. There are opportunities for action and gunplay, but for the most part this is an adventure about tough decisions and decisive action in other areas of human activity.

While the adventure is self-contained and has all the information a referee needs to run it, Borderland and Alien Module 1: Aslan may both be useful in expanding a campaign beyond these pages.

So after Arunisiir I gave in and put down my 8 credits for this. A decent enough adventure with moments of great detail, both situational and regarding the NPCs. However, it is a bit too low-tech and 'humanitarian' for most of my players, especially after 'Fiddler's Green' and because they are in the Drinax campaign and (as pirates) interested in loot and bounties, not aid work. It is kind of the 'anti-Drinax' adventure, so to speak. It is ideal for Imperial Scout characters. And yes, there are indeed giant space hamsters, with no apologies, as a major plot device!

I agree completely with the artwork comment. I fail to understand why Traveller book artwork is always so sophomoric (with a few notable exceptions). I realize art isn't free, but to go to all the work of creating a supplement, then to adorn it with anything less than high-quality professional artwork seems short-sighted. I'm not trying to insult whoever did the artwork, I think they did their best, but it's not of the quality that is going to attract buyers or generate excitement about the product inside.

As someone who put down good money on 'The Borderland', only to be fairly to extremely disappointed by the content, I have to agree that the artwork does have importance to Traveller books. Ms. (Amy) Perrett has gamely tried to do Aslan portraits in that supplement and even in Drinax 8, but as for rodents of unusual size, the cover here is...a travesty. Jokes about Minsc's sidekick notwithstanding, this 'image' immediately put the brakes on my desire to try and see how MJD would once again contrive to trap hapless Travellers in some outback hell...

just had to take a moment to say that's probably the least inspiring cover I have ever seen on a commercial release.

why in my opinion, it looks brilliant. You can just see that the book is just about space hamsters.(sarcasm)

That's too funny. I hadn't taken a close look at it yet.
I agree - though better executed technically, that's like one of the old Judges' Guild type covers.
The Borderlands - Homeworld of Boo, the Miniature Giant Space Hamster.

I think they were trying to get across the idea of a "old west, but not old west" feel. I don't think they were successful.
Having said that, I'm probably still going to buy this book.

So, is it true (since you've bought it) we can't judge this book (only) by it's cover?

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
