The Spire Issue #1

Welcome to The Spire online magazine, which we hope will be your premier adventures periodical for the 5th edition of the world's most popular role-playing game!

Beyond the Battlementsis an adventure for first and second level characters. The XP thresholds are de-signed for a party of five, but can be easily modified for one less, or up to two more player characters. Reducing or increasing the difficulty of each encounter to allow for different party sizes can typically be ac-complished by adding or subtracting one creature. Ad-ditionally, some groups are better optimized or have more experienced players than others, which means
that some might require a higher or lower degree of difficulty than what is presented here. The best rule of thumb is to gauge how the PCs are dealing with the challenges of the adventure and adjust the number of monsters as needed.

This adventure is designed so that a party of first level adventurers will reach second level before advancing to the second floor of the barracks, which would pro-vide too great of a challenge for first level characters, so it is important to ensure that the PCs play through a fair amount of the ground floor and Uncivilized Aren-dan before moving on to the final encounters of this ad-venture. In the same vein, PCs who employ wit, guile, and stealth to avoid encounters should receive ad-hoc experience awards for doing so in order for them to reach level two before attempting the second floor.

Beyond the Battlements is the first adventure in the Retaking Arendancampaign. The tale begins when the player characters take on a commission to capture the gnoll, G’aard’k Bloodsnout, who has been given com-mand over the goblinoid forces who patrol the streets of Uncivilized Arendan. Bloodsnout is unusually in-telligent for a gnoll, and possesses a keen mind for strategy, troop development, and deployment. It is be-lieved that capturing him will allow the king’s forces in New Arendan easier access to the uncivilized por-tion of the city, and they will also likely learn important secrets about their enemy’s operations.

About Our Team:
Darrin Drader just hit the thirtieth year of gaming milestone, having started playing with the red box back in 1984, quickly to Advanced, and then on to every edition that has been released in between. Back in 2000, he was one of the founding members of Dark Portal Games, one of the first RPG companies to exist primarily in the electronic market. Through the years, he has designed countless rules and adventures, and helped breathe life into several gaming worlds including Oathbound,Reign of DiscordiaNuclear Sunset, and Interface Zero (both the originalSavage Worlds Edition and  the more recent 2.0). He has also added important pieces of lore to massive settings like The Forgotten Realmsand Paizo's Golarion through his contributions.

Patric L Rogers probably has dice that are older than you. He was first published by Steve Jackson Games in 1986 with Autoduel Quarterly, again in Pyramid, and was integral to the development of material for Dark Portal Games, where he helped produce all manner of crunchy rules bits and setting material. He is excited about the prospect of moving into this new era of RPG publishing.

Robert Blezard has been a gamer since the late 1980s and is the designer and gamemaster of his own longstanding setting called World of Kulan, which has existed online since the mid 1990s. An active member of the RPG community, Robert has produced gaming material in a freelance capacity for not only Dark Portal Games but also Silverthorne Games and several online fanzines.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
