Heroes of Thornwall

Adventure calls! Will you answer?

Goblins are loose in the hills surrounding the town of Thornwall, and Mayor Thane has learned that no reinforcements are coming from Downbury Castle. You and your intrepid band of heroes are the only hope for this harried hamlet. If you cannot defeat the goblins and seal whatever Deepland hole they crawled from, Thornwall is doomed!

The Heroes of Thornwall campaign starter provides you with everything needed to launch your campaign. Inside you’ll find:

  • An Introduction to Aetaltis: Discover Aetaltis, a fantastic new campaign setting where stalwart heroes fight to protect the people they care about from the rising forces of darkness.
  • The Town of Thornwall: A detailed town environment for your fantasy campaign. It includes a full map, detailed building descriptions, equipment lists, and a rich supply of exciting adventure hooks.
  • The Green Briar Tavern: A classic fantasy tavern where the party can relax after a long day at the dungeon! It features a color map of the tavern, an authentic medieval menu, recipes for making the cook’s specialties at home, and various tavern games.
  • The People of Thornwall: Stats for 20 non-player characters you can use to populate your town, including constables, farmers, merchants, priests, tavern staff, and woodwards.
  • The Temple of Modren: A heroic Pathfinder® compatible adventure for 4-8 1st Level Characters. Delve into the Deeplands and face the dark power of the Endrori as you begin your quest to save Thornwall!

Plus five pre-generated characters, new rules for goodwill character rewards, and much more. It’s everything you need to start your campaign off right and support it for many adventures to come.

I just picked this up and I love it. I'm planning to use it for my homebrew game. I hope there is a Part 2 in the works which gives explanations on the other half of the marked buildings. Also, keeping an eye out for the 5e version. Great work, keep publishing.

I'm really enjoying the Aetaltis snippets on your website. Any idea when Thornwall 5e will be available?

Is there any chance of seeing Thornwall in 5e? I seem to recall the Aetaltis worldbook was going to be fifth edition, but then again, perhaps the re-launch of the kickstarter will be Pathfinder..?

There _will_ be a 5E version of Thornwall. Unfortunately it has been delayed as we rework the Kickstarter relaunch (with info on this coming VERY soon.)

That's great; I find 5e less fussy than Pathfinder. I'm very excited to hear word on the re-launch is on the way!

Are other products coming that will provide details for elements such as the setting-specific races?

Absolutely! We just released Champions of Aetaltis, a book of short stories set in the world. It's available in a number of places, including DRIVETHURFICTION.COM. In addition, we have a number of announcements that will be made early next month about our planned expansions. Finally, we do have playtest groups available. If you're interested, email

Thank you for the quick response! I've "liked" your FB page, and assume announcements will be made there when appropriate. Thank you for the offer to participate in the playtest -- I really appreciate it. I'm afraid my group doesn't play Pathfinder, so I wouldn't be much use to you. If I find a cool campaign setting, I run it in my system of choice and use the "crunchy" mechanical parts of the setting books as suggestions on how to model aspects of the world such as races or monsters in another system.

I look forward to the future releases.

So as someone who is rarely interested in fairly generic fantasy settings I suppose I have to ask. What about this setting would interest someone like me? What about it in theme and concept would really set it apart from any of a number of seemingly identical offerings?

Hey Entropy! I'm the Art Director on Aetaltis, and I hope I can give a good answer to this question.

Even though Aetaltis hearkens to a lot of existing fantasy tropes and the traditional sensibilities of the genre, there are a handful of places where we have rethought and restructured the mold from top to bottom. Humans, for instance, are aliens to this world, and along with them are the Newardin, Orogs, and Cheebat--all of whom are distinctly different from other fantasy settings, and even add a dash of sci-fi flavoring to an otherwise fantasy world. However, most of the common elements are still present: elves, dwarves, halflings, ancient evils, orcs, goblins, etc. They do, for the most part, have different origins and relationships than elsewhere, but they are intimately familiar.

I guess the best way to answer your question, though, is to ask what about fantasy normally turns you off? Because it is entirely possible Aetaltis is too much in the vein of whatever it was you don't normally...See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
