MUTT: The Free Multi-Genre Roleplaying System

ADD TO WISHLIST >

MUTT is a truly free and open meta-system that can be used by anyone to create and distribute their own game materials. The only thing that is restricted is copying the actual text of the book.

Its design goal is to provide a solid structure for building any fast-action pulp type one-shot or campaign.  It works equally well for fantasy, Indiana Jones,  science fiction, or any other action oriented genre and can freely mix elements from all.

The action system is designed to be both fast and empowering for the players while still staying within a strong core rules system that always has a justifiable answer for the difficulty for any action.

We like to say "nothing is impossible in MUTT, it may just be very, very unlikely."

The following is condensed from an actual play-tester review:

MUTT is hands down the best "gamist" RPG system I've ever played--it focuses on providing a medium-light, cinematic experience that tries hard to have a good answer to the question of "what number do I need to roll to accomplish X".

Unlike other systems that prioritize fidelity in simulation, or narrative flexibility, MUTT provides a gameplay experience that is up front about the fact that the players are, in fact, playing a game, not merely using their imagination.

The rules can seem complex, however the effort it takes to play this system is well worth it, as it provides strong incentives for players to think outside the box, and provides TORG-like narrative pacing mechanisms in the form of a deck of card-based one-shot powers..

If you're looking for realism, look elsewhere. This is pulp, suitable for Indiana Jones and Star Wars, not intricate diplomacy, ruthless wargaming, or tense down-to-the-bulllet survival horror.

As the author of MUTT I just want to take a moment to thank those who have downloaded it or are considering it. You are looking at the culmination of 20 years of experimenting with game systems and on and off writing. It is unusual in that it is a rules heavy system where all the rules are really support for the GM to create fast playing roleplay heavy gameplay.

It is also a moving target as I continue to play test with different audiences and different genres, and tune and extend the rules from the results. We are currently in the midst of another play test cycle, which will result in the release of MUTT 2.0, hopefully late this year. To track the developments, keep an eye on the errata an extensions sections at the MUTT community site.

The other thing that is in development right now is the first MUTT setting book-- Dragon Dreams. This is my house fantasy setting and will be chock full of examples as to how to use the system to build fantasy components.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
