Monster of the Week

Multiple File Formats

A monster lurks in the shadows...

Most people don’t believe in monsters, but you know the truth. They’re real, and it’s your task to bring them down. This revised edition of Monster of the Week brings that adventure to life.

Monster of the Week is a standalone action-horror RPG for 3-5 people. Hunt high school beasties a la Buffy the Vampire Slayer, travel the country to bring down unnatural creatures like the Winchester brothers of Supernatural, or head up the government investigation like Mulder and Scully. This book contains everything you need to tackle Bigfoot, collar a chupacabra, and drive away demons.

In this revised edition, you’ll find:

  • Character creation rules to bring your hunter to life and create a cohesive hunting team.
  • Eight simple moves to investigate and deal with monsters.
  • An easy-to-use system based on the popular Apocalypse World RPG.
  • Thorough mystery-creation tools and two ready-to-play mysteries.
  • New material including an introductory mystery; example monsters like Balkan vampires, ghouls, and spore trolls; and hunter types like the Crooked and the Spell-Slinger.

Grab the fireplace poker and open your spell book. That monster’s going down!

I’m wondering if there’s an error on page 100 under “Hold.” The example says the result of the investigate a mystery move gives two hold. But below that it seems to cite examples of three hold being spent in the same sequence. The first to ask the witness where the attacker went, the second to ask the Keeper about the monsters powers, and the third to ask the Keeper if the witness is hiding something.

Am I missing something? This is the most recent update BTW from a few days ago.

That was *corrected* in the most recent update from a few days ago. Is the filename of the PDF you're looking at "Monster of the Week Revised Corrected.pdf"? If not, then you're looking at an older version of the PDF.

Just beginning to check out MotW - are there character sheets for the PCs stats?

Have not purchased the Core rule book yet, just "sniffing around" at this point.

Yes. Freely downloadable ones, too.

Check it out:

Write up your favorite mystery and maybe it can be part of a MotW collection!

The description is a little misleading. The system does not lend itself well to x files or many other settings with non magical protagonists. 'use magic' is a basic player move. Many of the playbooks are inherently magical.

I suppose this would be my go to system for chuthulu / Dresden type games.

Call it "Use Alien Tech" or "Use Fringe Science" and you're off to the races.

Will this be available in POD?

No, but it will be available in print, through games distribution in games retail stores, and is currently for sale on the EvilHat website's store.

So, do I have to pay for this again, if I just bought the last version?
Customer avatar

Nope, if you bought the last version published by Generic Games, they should be sending (or may have already sent) you a coupon code for the PDF. Contact Generic Games (Michael Sands) with any questions about that.

What about people who bought the original kickstarter? Is there a time limit for the updated PDF?
Customer avatar

I'll point Generic Games this way, it's their call.

I will be sending the coupon to original backers.

Thank you. I may still buy the new book, but I wanted to make sure there was a reasonable difference before dropping 25 bucks on a physical copy.

Any idea when those coupon codes are going out? I don't seem to have ever received one, nor can I find contact details for Generic Games on DTRPG.

A week ago, maybe more. They were sent out by Generic Games, and — naturally! — wouldn't have gone to anyone who's configured their DriveThruRPG settings to disallow emails from publishers. You'll need to contact Generic Games/Michael Sands if you've missed yours. Check your spam folder too.

"wouldn't have gone to anyone who configured their DriveThruRPG settings to disallow emails from publishers"

You can't hear them right now, but sad trombones are serenading me. >.>

For anyone else who made the same mistake, you can find Michael's email address at the bottom of this page:
