A monster lurks in the shadows...

Most people don’t believe in monsters, but you know the truth. They’re real, and it’s your task to bring them down. This hardcover-based edition of Monster of the Week brings that adventure to life.

Monster of the Week is a standalone action-horror RPG for 3-5 people. Hunt high school beasties a la Buffy the Vampire Slayer, travel the country to bring down unnatural creatures like the Winchester brothers of Supernatural, or head up the government investigation like Mulder and Scully. This book contains everything you need to tackle Bigfoot, collar a chupacabra, and drive away demons.

In this PDF based on the hardcover edition, you’ll find:

  • Character creation rules to bring your hunter to life and create a cohesive hunting team, including fourteen ready-to-go hunter types ranging from the Snoop to the Spooktacular, the Monstrous to the Divine.
  • A stand-alone system based on the easy-to-use Powered by the Apocalypse engine.
  • Eight core moves to investigate and deal with monsters.
  • Thorough mystery-creation tools and two ready-to-play mysteries.
  • Example monsters like Balkan vampires, ghouls, and spore trolls.
  • Rules options to expand the scope and change the flavor of your game to fit the weekly monster story you’ve always wanted to see, including phenomena-type mysteries and alternative weird abilities.

Grab the fireplace poker and open your spell book. That monster’s going down!

Contains PDF based on the hardcover edition, and ePub (Nook) and mobi (Kindle) formats from the softcover edition, plus the handouts.

What's New in This Version?

With the hardcover edition of Monster of the Week, we’ve added in a little bit extra to the existing material from the revised softcover edition—24 additional pages in all.

From The Tome of Mysteries supplement, we’ve added rules options for alternative weird basic moves, phenomenon-type mysteries, and an alternative, more flexible investigate a mystery move. We’ve also incorporated all of the special Luck moves from Tome of Mysteries for this book’s playbooks that didn’t have them previously.

We’ve also brought in two additional playbooks that previously existed only as online downloadables: the Snoop and the Spooktacular.

If you already own the revised Monster of the Week and the Tome of Mysteries supplement you’ve already got what you need!

"i'm unable to unzip the Additional Materials file from my phone. I've tried downloading the Zip file from DTRPG several times, with the same result. I'm able to unzip other files, so I'm pretty sure it's the file. Anyone else encounter this problem? It's the Hardcover Additional Materials Zip file. Thanks for any and all help.

Hey, this is Sophie on behalf of Fred: For the ePubs, I found that I had to download them to my phone first, then manually unzip them.

I already have the physical copy of the book, do I need to purchase this again for the additional content or just the tome of mysteries?

I want to mention that it’s great customer service to update the PDF to the Hardcover Edition for free (and publish updates in general). That’s the kind of thing that makes me buy books when I’m on the fence, just to support the publisher.

Hey Fred
Will this edition get a v2.1 facelift update, to bring it in-line with the new HC book?
Ref: https://evilhat.com/product/monster-of-the-week-hardcover/

Or will there be a separate v2.1 edition PDF we need to repurchase?

The ToC of the epub version is broken on my iPad. Do others have the same issue?

We've had that epub out for a number of years now and this is the first I've heard of an issue with the TOC!

I've downloaded the epub again, but it has the same issue. The TOC is fine up to "Ely Holbeck, Bartender".

Then, it displays "Decide who has the initiative", "Use The Environment", "Make Maps" and "APPLY WEAPON TAGS" as sub-chapters to "Ely Holbeck, Bartender".

And that's it.

Can you reproduce this on your side?

Ah, hell. No, you're right. No idea why the guy who made those for us back in 2015 let that slide, but it's *also* the first time in 7 years someone's reported the issue to us, which says something about how much use the format gets. I'll try to get fixing it onto a task-list for us (tho that list runs deep)!

Might've been a tweak or two to the handouts PDFs associated with the main book. There hasn't been anything particularly significant done in years.

Hi Kelly, yep, Monster of the Week works with 2 PCs. The show Supernatural is a great example of what a 2 Hunter group can look like.

Question: it says "for 3-5 people." Is this a hard-and-fast thing, or are one-on-one and/or solo games possible? If possible, how possible?

Hi Evan, sorry for missing this post earlier. You can definitely play Monster of the week with a single player and single GM. I would scale some of the mystery threats back a bit (as they are generally designed for group) but otherwise there's nothing stopping you from playing with a solo monster hunter.

Some of the art may scare kids or put off parents, and one of the moves is titled "Kick Some XXX" which could be over the line for some. But it's hard to answer that beyond those few details — everyone's notion of where the line is, and what family friendly is, is different. 13+ would be fine *for me* as a parent.

I’m wondering if there’s an error on page 100 under “Hold.” The example says the result of the investigate a mystery move gives two hold. But below that it seems to cite examples of three hold being spent in the same sequence. The first to ask the witness where the attacker went, the second to ask the Keeper about the monsters powers, and the third to ask the Keeper if the witness is hiding something.

Am I missing something? This is the most recent update BTW from a few days ago.

That was *corrected* in the most recent update from a few days ago. Is the filename of the PDF you're looking at "Monster of the Week Revised Corrected.pdf"? If not, then you're looking at an older version of the PDF.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
