This contains 2 zip files with lots of 1-page pdf files, which are sort of a nuisance to print one by one. A single pdf would have been much easier to print.

Also no instructions of any kind are included. I think I'll be able to figure this out, but some sort of a plan would have been nice.

First, there are indeed instructions included with the set. Please open the second zip file, they are in the folder labeled 'Instructions'. Second, 1 page PDF files are the only option for a set like this where we give graphic layer options that are different for each file, otherwise any option you select would be applied to everything.

Thanks Thomas, amazingly fast reply. You folks stand behind your product!

I didn't notice the layers at first, thanks for the hint, that is even more amazing. I noticed that one of the layers is called Cameo registration marks. Does that mean these files would work somehow with a Cameo cutter?

Is this doable without an exacto knife?

I know that the instructions call for an exacto knife, or similar knife, and some pieces require cutting a section of the interior. I can use scissors fairly well, and regular pocket knives, but due to coordination issues, I have never been able to use exacto knives without slipping and mangling what I'm working on.

I think you could get away with using a box cutter or similar. They're easier to grip than X-acto knives and are quite sharp and have a good point.

I would imagine that after you purchase it, whatever way you go about making them is up to you. Perhaps the box cutter is a better idea as I know from working with this sort of thing in the past, there are just times that a really sharp, pointed blade is required to get clean cuts in tricky places or cutting slots without a crease mark you don't want a crease mark in - I also prefer scissors for easy stuff but the finish can be lacking sometimes.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
