Grain Into Gold

Watermarked PDF

The time comes in the life of every campaign world when the Game Master has to figure out why things don’t cost the right amount of money. Whether it is because the player characters are becoming merchants or everyone keeps trying to figure out why a two-handed battle axe costs less than a dagger, eventually the questions begin. As a Game Master you don’t have a lot of choices. The game’s rule book will not be enough, and you don’t want to spend the time to do it yourself.
Grain Into Gold is a fantasy world economy, a fully fleshed out economy for any fantasy world. Between excessive research into historic and modern economic factors and decades of professional experience designing role-playing games and worlds, the folks at Board Enterprises have produced another of their “Simple and Sane” supplements. Preserve game balance while at the same time establishing a realistic setting. Players will be happier, and you as the game master will be happier. (Grain Into Gold is written in a light style, so as to not put you to sleep like your last economics course did.)

This supplement contains:
70 pages of discussion on the basis for the economy and how the drivers of labor, materials and demand interact. Grain Into Gold is written in a more light hearted and casual tone. This is NOT a text book, but a very common-sense approach to fantasy economics and how it can work in your world.
A discussion on exactly what you need to do to make an economy work for your world. This is a step by step, “how-to” that will guide you right to the end result - a working economy that you can use in game, now. Not after weeks or months of work.
Charts detailing agriculture, ranching, textiles, salaries, and a price list containing over 500 items, including variations due to local trade.

Good but not great. This product is a good product that does what it sets out to do, but there is not much new if you understand the basics of economics. Several basic things are left out. They go in great detail to calculate the price of a lo [...]

Grain Into Gold is a very solid attempt to introduce a level of economic realism to fantasy games. The writing oft times has a tongue and cheek tone to help break the monotony of discussing economics and does a decent job of helping engage the reader. [...]

An extremely thorough breakdown of a fantasy economy. Some may call it dry, but I like to to think of it as scholarly and well done with enough humor to keep the reader's interest. Those involved in fantasy world building would do well to pick up a cop [...]

Grain Into Gold is a very simple PDF with scarcely any artwork that sets about the daunting task of trying to teach you how to work your fantasy town's economy and the myriad of factors that will change it. Grain Into Gold is system-neutral, but accoun [...]

A well written supplement that takes what should be a dry subject and turns it into a fun and interesting read. Clearly written, this volume is packed with useful information about the economics of a game world, that I never would have though of. I con [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
