Okay, so I have a question about licensing. While I hope Margaret Weis keeps the license for a long while, it's inevitable that someday she (they, company wise) will lose it. So, what happens then to our PDF purchased here? Can we still download it, or do we need to keep a copy of the PDF in a safe place for that inevitable future?

In the vast majority of cases, you will be able to keep the PDF in your library. That said, I cannot say 100% for sure what the end of this license will look like, because we're nowhere close to having that conversation yet. Fox has been really great to work with, so I don't anticipate there will be a problem. If you're nervous about it, then it couldn't hurt to keep it in two places. Thanks!

Hey there Brock. It seems that when a publisher loses the license they cannot sell those books and that includes PDF's. I have bought PDF's of books which went out of license and could not download the books even though they were in my Drivethru "library" And three of those books were Margret Weis books, SuperNatural, BSG and Serenity. So its always best to be safe than sorry. Especially with this publisher's track record of losing licenses.

Hey Saul - quick clarification. The licenses you reference came to a natural close based on the term of the agreements with the licensors. We wish they could last forever. Marvel, however, did end based on the transition on their end from Marvel proper to Disney. Do let us know if you have any other questions by reaching out to us directly via the MWP website.

Are there conversion notes between the Firefly rpg and the Serenity rpg?
Customer avatar
Monica V May 05, 2014 8:46 pm UTC
The Firefly RPG is a separate license than the Serenity RPG (2005); the rules, character, and setting are treated uniquely so we are unable to do a straight up conversion. The rules found in the Serenity RPG had since been revised as well. The initial ruleset was later revised, beginning with the release of Big, Damn Heroes. To help Cortex Classic fans learn the new system, we offered Wedding Planners Cortex Classic which ties into the Cortex Classic System blue book. Those rules are the final iteration of Cortex Classic, and that product is available on DriveThru as well.

What is the difference between this game and the Firefly RPG Core Rulebook being released in July? The cover on that one is more comic book looking but it is also made by Margaret Weiss Productions.

This is the same corebook. The comic book cover has since been revised to this cover; that art is on the first page of the book. We announced and shared the new cover on our website on Friday, March 28th. The release dates for the print edition have not been announced yet, and we will do that mid-April. Any date you see is an estimate from another vendor.

So how does this vary from the Serenity RPG, given it is essentially the same setting and rules? Is it simply an effective Serenity 2nd ed?

The Serenity RPG was based on the film licensed by Universal, employs Cortex Classic, and was published in 2005. The Firefly RPG is based on the Fox series, uses Cortex Plus, and debuted last year.

These are two separate games and were treated as such. Firefly, for example, dives into the series more and approaches worldbuilding from what was seen in the show. Plus and Classic play very differently from one another as well. Hope that helps!

Groundbreaking? In what way? Sci-fi westerns have been around for a long time.

Underappreciated? Sure. Groundbreaking? Not so much.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
