Tianxia: Blood, Silk & Jade

Kung Fu fantasy and epic Wuxia adventure come to life in Tianxia: Blood, Silk & Jade. Created for Fate Core System!

Launched on Kickstarter, Tianxia: Blood, Silk & Jade is now being made available to the world through RPGNow and Drive-Thru RPG! Renowned game designer Jack Norris presents an all-new adventure setting with Kung Fu rules designed from the ground up for the Fate Core roleplaying game. Beautifully illustrated in full color by Denise Jones, this book presents in detail the wild and dangerous Western province of Jingzhu, a border territory in the greater empire of Shenzhu. Players take on the role of Wuxia—wandering kung fu masters with skills and abilities that grant them the power to affect the fates of many—who are part of the Jianghu, a select culture of Kung Fu elite whose skills set them apart from other social groups.

Tinaxia: Blood, Silk & Jade is the first of a series of supplements for the Tianxia line. Future books already in the works include the Tianxia Lifepath Generator, which will include an Addendum for using our Kung Fu rules with Fate Accelerated Edition, the Twelve Golden Butchers adventure, and other sourcebooks expanding on different regions of Shenzhu, opening up new gaming vistas like Chinese mysticism and epic battle scale combat.

Tianxia: Blood, Silk & Jade is designed for Evil Hat Productions’ Fate Core System and requires those rules to play, but the supplemental material is written so that it can be easily used for any role playing system. Your journey through the world of Tianxia begins here: you might be a beggar priest, or the child of the Emperor himself, but it will be your abilities as a Wuxia that shapes your fate… and the fate of everyone you meet.

Do you have to buy fate to play the game?

It's designed to be used with the Fate Core rules! Evil Hat has a pay-what-you-like download up on their site, if you're not sure about them, yet. There's a Tianxia Accelerated PDF available, if you prefer Fate Accelerated.

Thank you. I have never played any Fate game. Is the accelerated rules easier to learn?

It's a shorter, more concise version of the rules that replaces skills with attribute-like "Approaches." I'm not sure if it's "easier" or not, because your history as a gamer will determine which things are more familiar to you. The Fate Core book has more examples and a pretty clear explanation of how things work, while the Accelerated Edition focuses on key mechanical concepts. When I run Tianxia, I tend to use Fate Core's skill list because it's what we designed it around, but some players prefer to use Approaches instead because character creation is much faster and more streamlined. Your mileage may vary. :)

Would it be best to read FATE first or tianxia?

That's gonna depend on you, really. I think I'd get more out of the rules if I understood the basics of Fate, but you might be more interested in the setting elements. Read whatever interests you most first, and then chase your curiosity. :)

We had a distribution deal with Angus Abramson of Chronicle City. You can find them on Facebook, and ask if they still have some of the books in stock. Last I checked, he still had inventory available to sell!

If you have a Facebook account, try poking them here:

If not, I can forward your email to Angus, just contact me through the Vigilance Press website or one of our social media links.

Really wanted the hardcover, so I ended up buying it on another site, but I'll be looking forward to picking up the other POD books in the future.

Will a POD version of this ever be available. Just can't get this book in print in the UK.

Chronicle City still has it in stock, according to their website! You get the PDF for free if you buy it from a retailer, through our Bits and Mortar program.

We don't currently have plans to release a POD version of Blood, Silk & Jade. We still have plenty of the hardcovers in stock.

This looks great. I am thinking about setting a game in Tamora Pierce's Tortall, and this would be a great supplement for players who wanted to play as Shang.

As a Kickstarter backer, I can't give a formal review (because I didn't buy it from this store), but I wanted to express my admiration for Tianxia from all my various perspectives: fan of wuxia fiction, writer, game designer, and martial artist. The book is simply beautiful, well designed, with a setting and personalities that are truly exceptional.

This is one that's well worth the space on your bookshelf, digitally or physically.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
