2014 ENnie nomination

Make sure you pick up the Rise of the Drow: Player's Guide, Prologue, and Epilogue and expand the adventure from levels 1-20!

2014 expanded & revised edition

494 pages/full color

Writing by Stephen Yeardley, Jonathan G. Nelson, Joshua Gullion, Ed Greenwood, Owen KC Stephens, Christina Stiles, Mike Myler, Brian Berg, Jason Stoffa, Kevin Mickelson. Art by Jen Page, Satine Phoenix, Todd Gamble, Kerem Beyit, Mates Laurentiu, Rick Hershey, Jacob Blackmon and more!

Foreword by Ed Greenwood

If absolute power corrupts absolutely, Matron Maelora best beware; her plans for total domination of the Underworld are already close to satisfactory completion, while attacks on the Upperworld have become increasingly successful. The other power-hungry drow families of Holoth may despise her but they know a true leader when they see one, and House Gullion has been revealed as the family to lead them all on the path to glory. With the entire Underworld in chaos and the Spider Goddess regularly communing with her chosen Matron, far greater dreams than mere regional conquest are within the grasp of the drow, as Maelora prepares her grand dark elf army for victory!
With other mystical allies standing firm with the Matron, other Underworld races beneath her heel or cowering behind fortified walls, and every drow ready to play their part when she gives the word, what could possibly stop her from achieving her final triumph and fulfilling her destiny?
But even the greatest of plans has a flaw if you look hard enough, and a party of stout heart and strong resolve can make a difference. At first, such a party may well believe it is on a smaller adventure, perhaps to win a few baubles or some small acclaim by rescuing a few kidnapped villagers. Soon, however, those adventurers will realise that much more is at stake, and that they are the ones who will need to make moves against the evil Matron Maelora and her increasing dominance if both the entire Underworld and Upperworld are to be saved. But how will they go about it? Can they ensure their own success when an entire city is standing against them? Only they have the chance to halt the Rise of the Drow!

"Rise of the Drow" is a standalone 'mega module' of almost 500 pages. It is designed for starters of 6th level and takes players up to around 18th level. It can be played in conjunction with "The Darkness Arrives", the prologue to this adventure that support PCs of level 1 to 6, and "The Commander of Malice", and epilogue to RotD that takes those same PCs to level 20.

Rise of the Drow (PDF) contains:

Any plans on the 5E edition? Is it still coming?

I'm really interested in this campaign but wanted to have it on 5E... if not, I may have to adapt the current PF one :(
Customer avatar
Jonathan N January 08, 2018 1:58 am UTC
Yes! Rise of the Drow Collector's Edition for PF or 5E is coming to Kickstarter in March or April 2018!
Customer avatar
Geraldo M January 08, 2018 2:00 am UTC
Ok, will try to hold out then... may get the PF module to get familiar with it and wait for the actual 5E mechanics.

Thanks for the reply!

Hi Jim, we're hoping to launch the Rise of the Drow: Collector's Edition hardcover/PDF Kickstarter between now and January 2019. If all goes as planned it could launch as soon as this month (November 2018)!

Hi Geraldo,

We'll be launching between November 2018 - January 2019. The Kickstarter will be for the Rise of the Drow: Collector's Edition, it will be a limited print hardcover with PDF for D&D 5th Edition or Pathfinder Roleplaying Game. Again, we will print only a limited number of books so you won't want to miss it. If you subscribe to our newsletter you won't miss out when we launch!

Do you have maps that can be imported into Roll20 that don't have the squares in the background?

I've had issues with premade maps and getting them to look right.
Customer avatar
Jonathan N November 05, 2018 5:25 am UTC
Yes, all the VTT maps for sale on DriveThruRPG for Rise of the Drow, Rise of the Drow Prologue, and Rise of the Drow Epilogue have no squares.

With the current price drop of the pdf to $19.99, will the release of a 5e pdf be at this same price or set at a higher one?

We have a special plan for the 5E version... I can't spoil anything just yet! ;)

Hello. Im very interested in this :) What are the plans for a new hardcover edition? Your site says that is pending another kickstarter, could you elaborate?
Customer avatar
Jonathan N July 13, 2015 6:57 pm UTC
We do plan on doing a complete revision of this series with all four books in one massive hardback. It will be at least a year before our Kickstarter launches but you can expect some pretty awesome changes/additions when the time comes. Sign up for our email list and we'll make sure you get notified when we launch. Just visit our site at Adventureaweek dot com then click the NEWSLETTER link in the top menu. Thanks for your interest!

This has been delayed and may not be launched for a year or more (just to forewarn those reading these comments). We do hope to eventually release a single hardback with all books in one (over 750 pages) including new art and maps. There is also talk of a 5E conversion into an Underworld sandbox but this is still in the planning phases. Right now we're intent on finishing Snow White, Aventyr Bestiary, and Into the Wintery Gale so those can become available to Kickstarter backers and the general public. Thank you for your interest in Rise of the Drow, truly our best adventure to date.

Thanks for this February 2016 update on the status of the hardcover 'uber'-edition. Anything new on timing? I keep coming back here to find out, so please do continue to update here! Also, please dont forget us Pathfinder folk in your update (including the intriguing 'sandbox' mode)!
Customer avatar
Jonathan N July 04, 2016 2:58 pm UTC
Not yet, still waiting on cartography revisions and additions. Once I have those we'll start working on layout. Also the 5E conversion will be coming around the same time. I would expect this in early 2017 at this rate. If you'll be at Gen Con stop by and pick up the main tome in softcover at an all time low special Gen Con price!

$55.99 for a .pdf? seriously the art works looks like stuff i flush down the toilet, oh wow drow that's an original concept.... not.
Customer avatar
Jonathan N January 19, 2015 9:53 pm UTC
The PDF isn't $55.99. It is $41.99, the same price Paizo charges for the Rise of the Runelords (a PDF of similar type and size). Also I would recommend against flushing any artwork down the toilet as it could clog the drain.
Customer avatar
Vhayjen . January 08, 2015 8:17 pm UTC
Oh yeah? You want me to pay you $36 for a pdf? You lost a huge amount of credibility, if not all. This price point is ridiculous. One way to ensure I won't be purchasing the product. It is a shame, too, because the book sounds amazing. I guess I will only stare at the cover and ponder what is inside.
Customer avatar
Jonathan N January 19, 2015 9:57 pm UTC
This book is nearly 500 pages and contains writing by some of the best authors in the industry. The pages are filled with gorgeous artwork by numerous artists and maps by 3x ENnie Award winning cartographer Todd Gamble. It is priced exactly the same as the Rise of the Runelords PDF by Paizo and at $36 you were getting the PDF at an all time low price, in fact the lowest we've ever had it on the net. We work hard to provide high quality adventures for our fans and will never reduce the quality of the work or cut corners for a lower price point.

I would like to know if the premium version includes the prologue and epilogue. Thanks.
Customer avatar
Jonathan N August 15, 2014 10:57 am UTC
Premium refers to the print quality of the book itself. What I would suggest is picking up the RotD hardcover from or right now at booth #3039 at Gen Con! The print quality of the hardback is the best of all as it was printed by the same company which prints all the Paizo books.

I was ready to balk on the price point as well. But I got it and started looking through it. First off it is just shy of 500 pages. Full color and full of information.
I'll have a review up soon (I hope) but I am ready to say that this is the book you need if you want to do anything with a Drow based adventure. Ever.

Looking back, I should also thank you, Marco, for your comments as well. As an aside, are any of you connected to the London D&D/PF/other games Meetup group? I'm on the mailing list, so keep an eye on what it is doing, and perhaps I could bring a hardback copy along sometime, if you ARE connected and are interested at all?

Afternoon Rob, hi Tom. I'm Stephen, one of the lead authors of the Rise of the Drow along with Jonathan Nelson (although that is obvious from the cover, I know...), who you'll see has replied to people below. I just wanted to thank you for the time you've taken to place your thoughts here, and know that we read and value each one. Here's to you enjoying great gaming whatever you are currently playing!

10% off at $49.99 is still WAY too much money for this... especially for a PDF. Even a hard cover book would be expensive at this price.

Marco V March 17, 2014 7:35 am UTC
You're partly right Bryce. I think the price is in many ways their bane. On one hand their products have a very high quality and some of their adventures clearly stand out among the best - especially Rise of the Drow. On the other hand the price per page sometimes seems outright ridiculous, especially since about half the number of pages most often simply results from separately providing VERY extensive stat blocks for both, Pathfinder and 3.5 (not even 4.0). Matter of factly I know of no other GM in my region buying Adventureaweek-products due to the price. I myself have to choose very carefully which modules I buy - mainly based on sound and well-founded reviews - and consider if I really plan to play them with one of my groups any time soon. So I buy only a hand-picked few - about 11-13 by now - most often at special sales like GM-day, while have no doubts I would buy them all if the prices were somewhat more reasonable.

My first thought upon seeing the price of this was: "Is this a joke?"

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
