Carnival Arcane: The LARP

Watermarked PDF

Despite the growing popularity of circuses, many small carnivals still tour the American countryside in 1928. Most carnival-goers seek only diversion and entertainment, but a few want something more, something they cannot find in the everyday world of light and reason. The Lancaster-Rigby Carnival is rumoured to offer what no one else can.

The carnival train arrived yesterday in the New England coastal town of Warren's Rock. Workers quickly hauled the tents into place, and the carnival opened this morning. Fun was had by all, but those in the know began arriving after the day's visitors went home.

The booths are up, the lights are strung, and the barker is ready to start the show. Welcome to the Carnival Arcane!

During the day, Lancaster-Rigby is much like other carnivals. Its colorful tents and avenues overflow with clowns, side-shows, caramel popcorn, and games of chance. However, at midnight, long after most people have gone to bed, the carnival lights come back on and the gates swing wide, welcoming those who seek help from the Other Side.

Be warned, for some here have dark secrets, some have powers that defy explanation, and some have murder in mind. Visitors experience true power, true miracles, and sometimes even true fear. Of course, all such things come at a price, but those who willingly enter the Carnival Arcane are usually desperate enough to pay....

Figments of Your Imagination (FYI) presents Carnival Arcane: The LARP, the first in a series of licensed, live action roleplaying scenarios inspired by the horror-themed music of Midnight Syndicate. This scenario allows your players to step into the chilling world of Midnight Syndicate's acclaimed album, Carnival Arcane.

What makes an FYI LARP so special? Our narrative-style character sheets provide each character's history, secrets, goals, and resources. Multiple plotlines give every player a chance to get involved, and the book's landscape format makes it easy to read both onscreen and in print.

The 96-page book includes:

    •    Simple rules that keep the action moving
    •    Comprehensive plot summaries
    •    Detailed character sheets
    •    Informative and enlightening player handouts
    •    Prop, decoration, and menu suggestions
    •    Extensive Game Master notes
    •    General advice on running LARPs, such as finding locations and attracting players

Carnival Arcane: The LARP is written for 11-20 players and at least one GM, with a suggested running time of four hours. Use our quick and easy rules, or convert the scenario to your favorite system. The Carnival Arcane soundtrack is not included with this adventure, and though it is not required, we strongly recommend playing it in the background during the event, to help set the mood and create the proper atmosphere. Note that this is a plot-driven LARP with no boffer (foam weapon) participatory combat.

I got a chance to play this LARP (my first ever) with the writers at GenCon! It was great! I also had the opportunity to run this for a group of friends. Of the 20 guests, only two had roleplaying experience. Despite that fact, the game was a big success. I highly recommend this to any LARPER, even newbies!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
