Supplement 13: Starport Encounters

ADD TO WISHLIST >

It happens to every referee at one time or another. The players jump in-system, dock at a starport, offload passengers and cargo, and then ask a string of questions.

‘So, what other ships are in the port?’

‘This cargo of pharmaceuticals – which does it actually contain?’

‘I go to the bar for a few drinks. Who else is around right now?’

This book will allow you to answer those questions with the minimum of effort, giving every appearance to your players that you have created your universe down to the  very last detail. You come off looking like a World Class referee, while your players have the joy of experiencing a bustling universe where there are plenty of other people around who clearly have their own lives to lead, making it feel like a real, living, breathing place.

Supplement 13: Starport Encounters provides you with hundreds of fellow travellers, cargoes and starcrews, any of which can lead to a brand new adventure.

Jeffery K, I had the same issue. I've contacted RPgNow about it. We'll see what they say. Compendium 3 looks like good stuff, FWIW.

I agree. They told me Mongoose hasn't sent the new file. I trust they'll update us when they get it. Patience is not a virtue of mine, however.

I bought this and got a download link to Compendium 3, oddly enough. Has this happened to anyone else?

There seems to have been a bit of editing tidy up in the product which largely addresses some of the criticism below - the authors are fully credited which is obviously the important thing.

In terms of sheer utility, however, it's an excellent resource. It's possibly more accessible than some of the previous Supplements attempts at creating an instant campaign pack. Anybody who plays Traveller ought to find a massive amount of use from it, and as with all the best Traveller products, it's all done with the most economical efficacy of language and design. A top supplement.

I've got the BITS 101 Starcrews and 101 Cargos (both purchased from DriveThru), and from the previews this looks like the same content, just with added artwork, and possibly some tweaking to fit Mongoose Traveller. As the BITS originals were multi-Traveller (classic, Mega, etc), probably wasn't too much of a stretch ...
Might be worth getting if you've not got the BITS products, but unless you're a completist or they've added more than just pictures, maybe not otherwise.

The Authors are the same, can't say what the original is like, but this is adapted to mongoose rules; nice book though.

Check out opening in character conversations in both this Page 3 and the preview for the 101 Starcrews [http://rpg.drivethrustuff.com/product/120221/101-Starcrews] on page 1 then look at page 6 on both.

Yes, from what I hear: the old, plus new stuff, by the same authors, converted to mongoose. It is a quality supplement, but not owning any BITS stuff, I can't say what is exactly in them vs what is in this.

Given my limited shopping self-control (resulting in the phrase "a shopping accident"), I might well end up getting a copy of this anyway - in which case I'll let you know how it compares. BITS products were renowned for being pretty high quality (embarrassingly, a better reputation for that than Mongoose's output), so even if it is a straight copy of their content, that's no bad thing (though giving them more credit wouldn't have hurt - they should be better remembered).

They may wish to adjust the cover to state Supplement 13 rather than 12.

Wow, incredible. From what I have seen so far this is an almost exact word for word cut and paste from the BITS 101 series, and they don't even acknowledge it aside from a blip in the copyright fine print. Really expect something new or at least a warning that it's been done already before someone plunks down $15 for this.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
