Turjan's Tome Of Beauty and Horror

by Robin D Laws with Ian Thomson

"The palace loomed before him, every window and balcony aglow with light. Among the lords of the city, there was feasting and revelry. If Kandive were flushed with drink and unwary, reflected Turjan, the task should not be too difficult. Yet, entering boldly, he might be recognized for he was known to many in Kaiin. So, uttering Phandaal’s Mantle of Stealth, he faded from the sight of all men…" Turjan of Miir

If you are more interested in dark fantasy than humorous escapades, or collecting the last 100 Spells rather than conning a stall holder of his terces, then this is the tome for you. The first volume of Jack Vance's Dying Earth has a very different tone to the later books. It has elements of horror, powerful sorcery, and even genuine heroics. This supplements lets you roleplay these puissant magicians, questers and driven heroes. You can

  • Develop powerful warrior magician characters, and get advice playing Turjan-level campaigns
  • Encompass new, esoteric spells, scribbled by madmen and fraught with danger in their use,
  • Face untold peril as you follow adventure hooks set on the Dying Earth and beyond,
  • Uncover arcane items from the ruins, or guarded by otherworld beings,
  • Gain new powers (Tweaks) such as "Occult Horrors too Numerous to Detail"
  • Discover contacts and potential enemies of cruelty and renown, Create Vat creatures as retainers, bodyguards or even companions.

"You won't find another list of elven spells or dwarven artifacts, but you will find strange vistas, dark and aloof magicians, and a taste of something that isn't lembas" review

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
