The Primal OrderTM reigns supreme. Also known as TPO, The Primal Order is the premiere resource for using religions and deities effectively and creatively in roleplaying games. Explore how deities gain power, learn why they need worshippers and temples, discover why they provide their priests with spells, and much more. TPO also offers detailed guidelines for the creation of artifacts, suggesting strategies for their design and use.

Heralded since its initial release as one of the most innovative and useful roleplaying supplements ever published, TPO is an invaluable tool for campaign development. Get ready—your roleplaying experience is about to be transformed!

This book is not a roleplaying game; it must be used with an existing roleplaying game system, such as those listed below.

The Primal Order is what we call a "capsystem": a system of rules designed to enhance and extend any game system on the market. To eliminate guesswork, we have included specific conversion rules for integrating The Primal Order with the following popular game systems:

  • The Arduin GrimoireTM
  • Ars MagicaTM
  • Castle FalkensteinTM
  • Chivalry & SorceryTM
  • CORPSTM
  • EarthdawnTM
  • GURPSTM
  • HarnmasterTM
  • Hero SystemTM
  • KultTM
  • PendragonTM
  • RoleMasterTM
  • RuneQuestTM
  • ShadowrunTM
  • TalislantaTM
  • TorgTM
  • Tri TacTM Games
  • Warhammer FRPTM
  • World of DarknessTM Games
  • World of SynnibarrTM

"The Primal Order is the definitive work on religion in roleplaying... Most systems treat gods as monsters, and religion is just a source of spells, or a restriction on weaponry. Not any more."  —The Gamer

Excellent handbook. This is the best source I've found for creating gods and any type of elite character. I hope the other books are released but if not then I'll have to do it on the fly. I had to do my own conversions for a few games but overall it works well with every system.

This is one of my all time favorite "generic" gaming supplements (Task Force Games "Central Casting" series really comes close though). It provides loads of rules and options on how to make the deities in FRPs really special, and not just very high powered NPCs, it also provides rules for how the detiies advance in power, how they develop spheres of influence, elevate servants, amd even mechanisms for how their churches can be organized. There is some book keeping involved if you take in everything, but that's what spreadsheets are for.

Not being a CCG fan myself, I'm actually sorry that WotC went in that direction and didn't continue their capsystem lines. The three supplements that were published for the Primal Order were also very good, and it would have been nice to see their take on the other topics that they had planned on doing (Governmental Order would've been the one I would have been most interested in seeing, although the Military Order and Economic Order would've...See more

I suspect that this book, and the lawsuits that followed after at, are partly responsible for WotC moving towards Magic. (And in the long term, ironically Magic probably broke TSR until WotC bought Dungeons and Dragons).

Personally I'm hoping they release the other books that came out for the Primal Order line. Maybe even some material that may have been written but never saw print.

Well it's been over two years so I guess that's a 'not going to happen' on the rest of the books.

These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
