Revised for 2023!

Monstrosities thundered onto the OSR landscape when it debuted in 2013. Ten years after its first appearance, Monstrosities is back and better than ever with over 500(!) monsters.

Are you tired of seeing the same old boring monsters in your campaigns? Fear not, for the ultimate monster compendium is here again! And it's a monster of a book, pun intended.

You can never have too many monsters! No matter what kind of campaign, there are foes galore to stock its wildernesses and dungeons, even the unknown depths of its mysterious oceans. This is a compendium that contains the monsters from the rulebook and many monsters from the First Edition of the original roleplaying game, but there are hundreds and hundreds of completely new beasts. This book has everything you could possibly need to spice up your game.

So, what are you waiting for? Get your hands on this book and start unleashing an army of monsters on your unsuspecting players. Who knows, they might just thank you for giving them a challenge they'll never forget. Or they might curse your name as they run for their lives. Either way, it's sure to be a wild ride.

Note: This is a 2023 revised printing of the original Swords & Wizardry monster book, updated with errata, hundreds of illustrations, and twenty more monsters for your OSR game.

The cover image seems to indicate this is the 2023 revision, but the upload and last updated dates are showing as 2013. What's going on with this product?

Quite frankly, Frog God Games has made following it's product lines rather complicated. There are some products that are on DriveThruRPG that aren't on their website, and vice-versa. Their products here on DriveThruRPG are sometimes added under the publisher Frog God Games, and sometimes under the publisher Necromancer (which I believe Frog God Games owns outright).

The preview file here is still the old 2013 version as well.

How much overlap is there with time of horrors?

Monstrosities is classic monsters from early gaming (for example red dragon). Tome of Horrors has unique or rare creatures in Swords & Wizardry. Therefore there is some overlap, but not much.

Are the stat-blocks here compatible with OSE's ascending AC, or are conversions required?

You need to review the price. There are many similar products out there. Please make this competitive.

Almost nothing like this. More than 500 pages? Please send me in the right direction for another OSR monster collection at this price point.

I'm not sure if you're interested in the whole Patreon thing. But I release at least 4 monsters a month for multiple editions of DnD. At $1 per month that is about a quarter a piece. And, at the $1 tier I also provide paper mini designs and VTT tokens of the creatures. Still not quite as good a deal as Monstrosities though I guess.

How about the AD&D Monstrous Manual(384 pages for around $10) and one random compendium(for about 100 pages for $5)?
A retro clone book that costs 150% of a comparatively original book isn't really competitive
(Heck, you can get a printed version of the monstrous manual for what this pdf costs)

I can think of a book that is of higher quality, is OSR, has more content, and actually goes on sale. It isn't 500 pages, but that's because they don't pad their book by putting 1 monster on each page with a lot of whitespace. The other thing this S&W book does to pad the page count is put different kinds of the same monster on separate pages. I like S&W but the Monster book from Castles & Crusades is better in every way, and it can be easily used with S&W.

This is just a link to the Castles And Crusades book. If you look at bundles, you can get it cheaper.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
