The Ladder

The Ladder is a rules-lite roleplaying game, perfectly suitable for use with new players, and especially with younger players. This lack of complexity has also seen The Ladder used successfully to run internet roleplaying games.

Tasks are resolved with a single roll of a standard six-sided die. There's no addition, subtraction or multiplication required, and there are no numbers used to describe how good characters are at things. Have a look and see ...

Why is it called The Ladder?  The entire task resolution system is designed on a 5-step ladder each rung denoting a level of expertise required to achieve a certain effect. If you are 'good' at driving, then we assume you achieve a task result of 'good' most of the time. Occasionally you will be forced to Step Down your success level (to Poor or Fail) or Step Up (to Expert). All is explained inside.

It's basically the FUDGE RPG with some of the Ladder adjectives changed, but instead of FUDGE/FATE Dice (or d6-d6), it uses a regular d6 read in a special way.

It would have been nice to see the Author credit the FUDGE RPG at least as an inspiration. Even the name "The Ladder" is from FUDGE.

At the time it was written there were several homebrewed games being circulated that resembled, or took inspiration from, Fudge. I looked at Fudge but didn’t like it, and thought I could come up with a faster, shorter alternative. So I consider it an alternative to Fudge, not inspired by.

I could see "alternative to" if it wasn't so plainly using things from Fudge, like it's most core element (the adjective trait Ladder, which you've mostly used just with one or two of the adjectives being changed). It really comes across as just tweaked-Fudge with different dice.

I have been a long-time fan of this game. Super simple, requires no prep, and is all resolved on a single d6. Admittedly I'm biased: I helped flesh out the superheroes section back in '03. With this system I've written a Final Fantasy, Minecraft, Fallout, Harry Potter, and even a stand-alone space genre for my kids with this simple book. I'd love to see a 'fan setting' page set up for people to populate with character 'sheets' and suggested skill lists per genre.

For free this is a great rules-lite system. My only issue is I prefer games with dice pools, and I've been contemplating a system hack where you use a die-per-rung and you're looking for 5+ or 6+, possibly with a wild die for twists of fate in the story.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
