Hero Kids - Cover

  • Develop your kids' imagination and skills
  • Simple mechanics using only six-sided dice
  • Beautiful presentation, with fully illustrated heroes, monsters, and maps
  • 10 heroes, including boys and girls
  • Challenge kids with combat and exploration
  • Playtime from 30-60 minutes
  • Includes a full adventure: Basement O Rats
  • More adventures available now

Hero Kids has a simple combat and adventuring system which avoids the complex maths of full-blown systems.  Hero Kids' opposed dice pool system also keeps the players involved in the game even when it's not their turn.

The combat and adventuring mechanics in Hero Kids are based on six-sided dice, so you don't need to find any unusual dice to play!

The core game comes in a 50-page PDF and includes all of the rules and play instructions, as well as 10 heroes for the kids to play, plus a set of 16 basic monsters (and all of the separate adventures come with additional monsters). The game includes male and female heroes, including Warriors, Hunters, and Warlocks as well as unique heroes like the Rogue, Brute, Healer, and Knight.  All of the heroes and monsters also come with printable stand-up minis to use in combat encounters.

Additionally, this basic game pack also includes the 19-page introductory adventure 'Basement O Rats', which comes with an extra monster and five illustrated printable encounter maps.  Can the kids rescue their friend Roger from the unusually large rats that have overrun the tavern basement?

Hero Kids has undergone and extensive development and playtesting to ensure the game is as simple, addictive, and engaging as possible.  But don't believe me, listen to the actual players:

"The game was great, we were off and playing within a few minutes of reading the rules!"

"Was woken up at 6am this morning by my son, saying he wanted to play Hero Kids right now!  There's no such thing as going back to sleep in a 7yo's universe!"

"The game was simple enough for my precocious three-year-old to enjoy, and my five year old to not be distracted from. With the included adventure we all had a lot of fun, including me."

"The art in the book is great: the character portraits are great and very evocative, bringing forth things kids interested in this will probably be familiar with anyway. There's a character who resembles Rapunzel from Disney's Tangled, another who reminds me of Prince Zuko from Avatar: The Last Airbender."

"The game mechanics are easy to understand and fast enough to keep young players interested and do not get in the way of the story that is unfolding."

"The only real complaint I have is that there aren't full-page coloring pages available for each of the character portraits, something my kids (and myself!) would really enjoy."

"The design is clever, well thought out, and guaranteed to make you jealous that you didn't come up with it first."

"Providing stand-ups for each character helped a lot as well - it saved me from having to dig through my existing figures to find ones that resembled the children, and it reused the wonderful art."

"A great 'starter' rpg for kids, and even better gaming experience for parents to play with their kids. The core rpg experience has been boiled down to its bare essentials here. It only takes about 15-20 minutes to read the entire rulebook and have a good enough grasp on the rules to play your first session. Games will typically take under 30 minutes to play, which short for a typical rpg session, but absolutely perfect when playing with kids."

My printer prints every page of this(both versions) up in all black. Is there a printing protection?

Hi Michael, this is usually caused by trying to print with MacOs's Preview. Preview does not properly decode transparency. Install a PDF reader to fix the project.

Hi. I am absolutely loving your game. I am using the game in a school working with SEN children to develop social skills and positive interaction. It is working great. Do you sell any posters or other rescorses that I can use to promote your game around the school?

Very excited to play this game with my 6yo son, but have a couple questions I couldn't figure out answers to using the guide book. (And forgive my ignorance: this is my first RPG.)

1. What happens if all heroes fail an ability test? Is it simply that they need to come up with another creative solution to overcome the obstacle or solve the puzzle -- and then roll again using that attribute/skill, etc? In the case of a trap, I understand there could be another consequence of failing the test, but I'm confused about ability tests like some suggested in the Basement O' Rats adventure. For example, one suggestion is an intelligence test "to know that the basement is often overrun by rats (but not usually this big)." I don't quite understand what the consequence would be if all heroes fail this test (or, frankly, what the consequence should be if they pass it). Would you clarify for me?

2. "Prone" is defined as when a character is lying on the ground, whether because...See more

Hi Bianca,

If the heroes fail an ability test, then usually the GM will allow them to try again or give them the chance to come up with another solution.

Some of those ability tests in Basement O Rats are designed to engage the players through the exploration ability tests, and to give them hints about the enemies they face. In some cases, failing one of these tests will simply mean that the players miss out on clues or warnings, while others (such as missing a set of rat tracks that lead to the final room) may mean that the heroes take a short diversion.

For 'prone', this condition is defined in the core rules. Characters can be knocked prone by the special actions and bonus abilities of heroes or enemies.

"While prone, the character’s actions all have 1 fewer dice, melee attacks against them gain 1 extra die, and characters gain 1 armor die when their attacker is not adjacent to them. To stand up, prone characters need to get up, which costs 2 squares...See more

I had great fun playing this for the first time yesterday with my 5yo and wife. Very good idea to make the heroes black and white so the kids can colour them in beforehand!

I have a couple questions:
What order should we play the adventures in? (Or if this is in one of the pdfs somewhere which one is it? I have the complete bundle.)
I didn't see anything saying how far enemies can move - do they count as 'characters' and have a default of 4 as well?

Justin H February 11, 2019 11:34 am UTC
Hey James, the suggested adventure order is detailed in the blog post below. And for the monster movement, they are characters (as are the heroes), and all characters can move 4 squares on their turn.

Hi Justin, thanks for the quick reply! I was expecting custom movement per creature but it makes sense that it's more straightforward than that so the little ones can remember. Thanks for the order list too. We played yesterday and my son asked this morning if we could play again next weekend. Such a great product :)

Hi, thank you. Yes, I already noticed that. I think it would be great to translate all the books as well. I have a few friends here looking for some simple RPG they can use with kids. As tabletop RPGs came to Russia just recently (at least on a more or less notable scale) first RPG fans just at the point now when they are about to play with their kids. :)

Just purchased this to start "making up stories" with my Son. He loves the images and the non human heroes too!
My question is are the images available easily outside of the pdfs? My son would love the be able to digitally colour his hero and pet. And also choose the colours for the monsters!
He is only 3 so has not yet grasped real world colouring, but thanks to the plethora of iPad apps he would be able to colour them digitally and then I could print the standees for him and they truly would be his heroes!

Just bought the full PDF bundle nice stuff.
But did I miss something or there no straight black and white - printer friendly - versions of the character, pet, monster, etc. cards?
Customer avatar
Justin H February 10, 2019 4:28 am UTC
That's correct, all of the hero and monster cards (and the equipment) always have the parchment backing.

If this was "reskinned" a bit, and with different art aimed at adults, this would be a great quick pick up game for gamers of any age!

Hi Justin, I'm a chinese buyer and I'm also a father of 2 years old boy. So far I haven't played Hero Kids but after reading through it, I think I like the ideas. I would like to translate it into chinese and maybe I can publish it in China. Please contact me if you are interested in.

Thank you!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
