Hero Kids - Cover

  • Develop your kids' imagination and skills
  • Simple mechanics using only six-sided dice
  • Beautiful presentation, with fully illustrated heroes, monsters, and maps
  • 10 heroes, including boys and girls
  • Challenge kids with combat and exploration
  • Playtime from 30-60 minutes
  • Includes a full adventure: Basement O Rats
  • More adventures available now

Hero Kids has a simple combat and adventuring system which avoids the complex maths of full-blown systems.  Hero Kids' opposed dice pool system also keeps the players involved in the game even when it's not their turn.

The combat and adventuring mechanics in Hero Kids are based on six-sided dice, so you don't need to find any unusual dice to play!

The core game comes in a 50-page PDF and includes all of the rules and play instructions, as well as 10 heroes for the kids to play, plus a set of 16 basic monsters (and all of the separate adventures come with additional monsters). The game includes male and female heroes, including Warriors, Hunters, and Warlocks as well as unique heroes like the Rogue, Brute, Healer, and Knight.  All of the heroes and monsters also come with printable stand-up minis to use in combat encounters.

Additionally, this basic game pack also includes the 19-page introductory adventure 'Basement O Rats', which comes with an extra monster and five illustrated printable encounter maps.  Can the kids rescue their friend Roger from the unusually large rats that have overrun the tavern basement?

Hero Kids has undergone and extensive development and playtesting to ensure the game is as simple, addictive, and engaging as possible.  But don't believe me, listen to the actual players:

"The game was great, we were off and playing within a few minutes of reading the rules!"

"Was woken up at 6am this morning by my son, saying he wanted to play Hero Kids right now!  There's no such thing as going back to sleep in a 7yo's universe!"

"The game was simple enough for my precocious three-year-old to enjoy, and my five year old to not be distracted from. With the included adventure we all had a lot of fun, including me."

"The art in the book is great: the character portraits are great and very evocative, bringing forth things kids interested in this will probably be familiar with anyway. There's a character who resembles Rapunzel from Disney's Tangled, another who reminds me of Prince Zuko from Avatar: The Last Airbender."

"The game mechanics are easy to understand and fast enough to keep young players interested and do not get in the way of the story that is unfolding."

"The only real complaint I have is that there aren't full-page coloring pages available for each of the character portraits, something my kids (and myself!) would really enjoy."

"The design is clever, well thought out, and guaranteed to make you jealous that you didn't come up with it first."

"Providing stand-ups for each character helped a lot as well - it saved me from having to dig through my existing figures to find ones that resembled the children, and it reused the wonderful art."

"A great 'starter' rpg for kids, and even better gaming experience for parents to play with their kids. The core rpg experience has been boiled down to its bare essentials here. It only takes about 15-20 minutes to read the entire rulebook and have a good enough grasp on the rules to play your first session. Games will typically take under 30 minutes to play, which short for a typical rpg session, but absolutely perfect when playing with kids."

Hi, I recently bought a Hero Kids (PDF + Softcover). The version I downloaded from RPGThrough (including the POD file) is version 2.2, but the printed copy I've received in the post is version 2.1. Is this normal? I was expecting to received 2.2 also in printed form!

Apologies. Somewhere in the updates I missed uploading the Hero Kids print book to 2.2. I'm in the middle of the next revision of the PDF and print book. I'm happy to send you an updated book when the next revision is complete. Drop me an email at

Anyone know of good virtual table top options for Hero Kids?

I've never actually used it, but Roll20 has a user-contributed character sheet.

Hi, my kids (8 and 4) and I love Hero Kids. I've introduced a few other families to it as well and they've all enjoyed it. I have a request. I like being able to print booklet sized versions of the rules and adventures I use (to save on paper and space). I can do that with the POD version of the Hero Kids rules, but the double page wide layout of the other books does not come out correctly. Would it be possible to get a POD version of Basement O Rats and the other adventures - single page layout so that they could be home printed as booklets?

I'm having trouble printing the maps for both the printer-friendly version and the main version.
When printing I just get a page full of black.
To get round it - I'm screenshoting the map and then printing the screenshot.

Am I doing something wrong?

(Great product!)

Hi Kevin, this might happen if you're using a Mac and printing through Preview. If this is the case, try a PDF app for printing.

Hero Forge Games has released a selection of art, assets, and templates for you to use to create your products for the Hero Kids Creator’s Guild. These assets and art are licensed for use in content submitted to our community content program. You can only use the materials in products you publish in the Hero Kids Creator’s Guild. - I searched, but couldn't find this on Drive-Thru. Is it elsewhere?

I'm looking to run an rpg for my 6 year old niece. When I asked her what kind of character/game she wanted to play she said a half-vampire, half-fairy who goes on quests. (I should note that she also really likes villains, so the ability to have a little edge to the characters is also appreciated.) I have no issues with making my own story for her (though adventure modules to run/adapt later are always a nice bonus) so what I'm really looking for is a game system with good, simple mechanics I can adapt for our purposes. Does this system lend itself to something like that?

This system should work well. It's a simple (in a good way) system that you can easily adapt to whatever your needs are. My 8 year old twins have really enjoyed it!

I am recreating the Basement O' Rats in the online roleplaying system. Is there any chance I could get higher resolution art for the heroes and monsters?
Customer avatar

Hi Sean, the best bet is to grab the high-res artwork from the Hero and Threats coloring books.

Hi, just started the game basement o rats and it is great! I have a few starters questions: what is the best way to integrate the expansions like the equipment cards? Can i introduce that they have to make a 'search test' (plenty barrels) and then may take a card? Or are there stricter rules? I can imagine if the take them all it would be out of balance.
Kind regards, i (we) love this game!
Customer avatar
Justin H April 20, 2020 12:54 pm UTC
Hi Maartrn, introducing more the equipment cards won't unbalance the game markedly, because characters can only use one piece of equipment at a time. However, it's good practice to use the equipment as special rewards and treasure. The players should earn these rewards for heroic and inspired activities. Enjoy!

This is a truly excellent introduction to RPG for kids. My kids (6 and 4) got the idea and love the story. Game-play is simple and rules are easy to follow (and change) to suit to their ability/age. They also just started playing the old Pokemon game, which is very similar in game-play and helps them understand the concept. The first Rats story is a brilliant starting point and can be played many times. Even before we started the actual game, we spend a good half day printing and colouring which kept them entertained and build anticipation and excitement. Highly recommended!

Thanks so much for this!
My kids (10 and 7) and I just played the intro adventure and had soooo much fun! The rules were easy for me to explain to the kids (without modifications) but still kept the game from getting "dumbed down" as a consequence.
Definitely made our quarantine (waiting for test results) more bearable!

How many soft cover books are there (English), and do they cover all of the PDFs?
Customer avatar
Justin H February 11, 2020 9:38 pm UTC
There are three softcover books:
• Core Rules (including 10 Hero Cards and base monsters)
• Monster Compendium
• Adventure Compendium I (which includes seven adventures, from Basement O Rats to Tomb of the Lost King)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
