Glory & Gold Won by Sorcery & Sword

You’re no hero.

You’re an adventurer: a reaver, a cutpurse, a heathen-slayer, a tight-lipped warlock guarding long-dead secrets. You seek gold and glory, winning it with sword and spell, caked in the blood and filth of the weak, the dark, the demons, and the vanquished. There are treasures to be won deep underneath, and you shall have them.

Return to the glory days of fantasy with the Dungeon Crawl Classics Role-Playing Game. Adventure as 1974 intended, with modern rules grounded in the origins of sword & sorcery. Fast play, cryptic secrets, and a mysterious past await you: turn the page…

RULES SET

DCC RPG is a fast-paced, open-feeling rules set allowing for epic game experiences without unnecessary tethers. It uses modern game-play while paying homage to the origins of role-playing and the fun that it inspired.

REVIEWS

Here's an excerpt from our favorite review (you can find the whole review on our website):

“This isn’t your father’s D&D…it’s your batsh*t crazy uncles’ D&D, straight from the smokey basement with faded black-light posters on the walls and 80’s Manowar blaring on the old tape deck. You might turn up your nose at first, but once the seven-sided-dice start rolling you find yourself sucked in.”

Here are some other reviews.

  • Year of the Dungeon: "Goodman took a very old-school point of view and made a game that manages to offer a fresh perspective on many aspects of the game while loving maintaining all the core tenets of old school play. More importantly, the game doesn’t just provide rules, but it’s a primer on how to get the most out of its chosen style of play."
  • Game Knight Reviews: "The DCC RPG book has a suggested retail price of $39.95, which I think is quite reasonable in an age when smaller hardcover books are going for the same general price point. But when you think about all the art in the book, $40 is a steal. And that’s part of my point about it being distracting. I turn the page and get lost in the art, some of which is amazingly detailed and then I have to reread the page prior to remember what I was reading about."
  • Raven Crowking's Nest: "Having read the Dungeon Crawl Classics core rulebook rather exhaustively now, I am coming to the conclusion that this will be my go-to game for all time.”
  • EN World: “Make no mistake, DCC RPG is not for everyone and it does not try to be. Randomization, heavy use of tables, critical fumbles, and no multiclassing are strong departures from what many new gamers have become accustomed to.”

The current PDF is for the 8th printing of DCC RPG.

Best RPG out there hands down for fantasy D&D fans. It will replace D&D for you permanently. 5 stars!

It sounds like this is an evergreen product where new printings are available to past purchasers?

Went ahead and took a risk: purchasing it in March 2020 resulted in a download for both the 4th and 7th printings (7th printing per the back cover and Brett B's comment below).

The file name says "7th printing", but the blurb on the first page says "5th printing", which seems more likely given that the previous version's file name is "4th printing".

Yeah, this is bugging me too. All over the Goodman Games website, including the product catalog and forums, there are references to '7th Printing'.. including the link to this product page, but as you say, the text inside the PDF says 5th. Kinda makes one feel like they're missing an inside joke.

But... the back cover does indeed say 7th Printing right above the ISBN number.

That is indeed weird. I just bought the softcover book, and the back lists 7th printing, the first page 5th printing.

I can explain. It is the 5th printing of the hardcover edition of the book, and originally we were going to call it the "5th Printing." However, we also had two printings of the softcover in between the hardcover printings, so we decided a more accurate description of the latest printing was the "7th Printing." The mention of it as the 5th printing on the inside is us forgetting to go back and change that. Sorry for any confusion! :)

How important are miniatures to DCC? Can I play without them? Will I be missing out on a lot of the system if I play without miniatures?

Ive played a bunch without it. Its a great system and great game. If your DM/Judge is good you wont need them! :)

Hello,

I am trying to set up a solo/cooperative game where there is no DM. My aim is to make it similar to the hex crawls of old with dungeon exploration as well. I have all the material I need (hexes, dungeon tiles etc.) minus a good system that is easily adapted for old school Hex crawl. Would this system be a good candidate for solo adventures, i.e does it supply enough random generators to make a hex crawl possible?

Thank you

This PDF supplies rules, not so much generators.

First time I played we all started with 4 level 0 characters and they start dropping fast, we pretty much were left with about 1 each(I had two still), the GM let one guy turn his pony into a human character so he basically lost all four characters. It was pretty funny. Quite fun. This is one game where you don't exactly rush to get into the middle of the action, hint, hint.

It's the third printing. It has a couple of clarifications and typo fixes. On the goodman website there is a post listing the changes - there weren't many.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
