BEAMSWORDS AND BAZOOKAS is a tabletop role-playing game about mech pilots at the brink of World War 3. This core rule book includes steps for making characters, rules for tactical combat, and guidance for running the game as the gamemaster. It also includes a 10-episode campaign and setting details that give you a place to start your adventure.

Players take control of the pilots of MASS, the Mobile Armor Suppression and Surveillance unit of the Global Protectorate. They are tasked with keeping the peace as tensions rise and conflicts break out. The previous generation was able to defeat alien invaders, but can this new generation of mech pilots save humanity from itself?

one of my favorite mecha anime is escaflowne (Despite all the weird stuff with the fate engine and the isaac newton at the end), because of the beauty of merging giant robots with medieval fantasy. there's SO MANY huge monsters to kill that mechs would put humans on a more even keel with.

so, are there monsters for this system? kaiju from the depths? invaders from beyond the stars? or even plenty of mech enemy types for the players to fight, reskinned as fantasy creatures?

also, I am curious about what the "out of mech" experience would be. is there combat and adventure to be had on foot?

Hi John,

Sorry for such a late reply here.

There are stats for huge monsters to fight and also lots of enemy mech stats which can easily be customized and reskinned. There's even some Kaiju-esque paper miniatures for you to use if that's the style of game you're going for.

There's plenty of rules for out-of-mech adventures, but I made an effort to keep them simple. There are lots of Traits which specifically enhance character abilities and don't effect mech combat. One of our playtester's favorite builds was a mediocre mech pilot who was extremely capable at everything non-mech related. So, I think there should be enough there to allow for the types of adventures you'd want to run.

Best,
Justin

Played this DM'ed by the designer at PAX Unplugged with two of my friends. LOVED IT. The Mech Combat was creative, varied and allowed for many tactical options. I wondered how the "out of mech" part was going to go. But I loved it! So both parts combine to make a really engaging world and game. Making you feel like you are in an anime.

Hi Michael,

The sale was inadvertently WAY more discounted than intended. I tried to correct it, but the people at DriveThruRPG told me it was too late. So, yes, the people that snagged the Deal of the Day really got an excellent value.

Best,
Justin

Just bought it. Surprised to find that the paper miniatures file is just 5 (low-res) pages but is nearly 90MB, which should be fixed without any big problems.

Thanks for pointing this out! They had the original high-res art embedded. I compressed the PDF and it should be a much more manageable file size now.

There is nearly to none information in the text above and the Preview is too small to read anything.
So i guess Kickstarter is the way to go?!

Hi Patrick,

I did not realize the flash preview was so small. Thanks for pointing this out. I've changed the preview to a full-size PDF preview so you can get some sense of the character creation.

Best,
Justin

Hi Yann,

It's a new, self-contained system. But, it most closely resembles Savage Worlds if you are at all familiar with that game.

Best,
Justin

Is this connected to the M.A.S.S. Builder game still under development on Steam?

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
