Lordling: Fantasy Role-Playing Game for Kids

Gateway to Imagination

Lordling is the baton to hand off fantasy role-playing to the next generation!

It is an introductory role-playing game for kids. Play all of the classic race classes from Labyrinth Lord, but with a new streamlined system perfect for young new players.

Lordling is meant to be used by a mentor to teach young kids how to play role-playing games. It is a self-contained game, but as the players become more experienced it will benefit from using Labyrinth Lord for additional material.

Finally! Your kids are ready to play. But can you handle their imaginations?

Lordling presents rules very similar to B/X, but uses 2d6 or 1d6 for resolution. The overall system is streamlined for kids, but with enough detail that it can also be used as a "beer & pretzels" RPG for adults or older kids.

Halflings are omitted in the Character Attack Table, that's a huge oversight, in my opinion. How do others handle halflings? Labyrinth Lord is no help, as halflings are in the same category with fighters and other classes, which is clearly not the case here.

My idea was to give them the elf's ability - they do get +1 with missiles which brings them on par with the cleric and dwarf in that case.

Will there ever be an updated version, or was this abandoned?

How much damage does backstab do?

As written, it only gets a +2 attack bonus, but you might rule that damage is doubled as in Labyrinth Lord.

How does armor class work in this game? is it ascending or descending?

There isn't AC in this game. There is a modifier to hit for warriors, though.

I wish the preview actually showed something of the system.

There's a typo on pg2 of the preview where it says "Wzard"

One thing that seems to be missing from the rules, is how to determine abilities? I'm guessing 2d6 in order?

That really needs to be clarified in the next/updated version.

Yeah, this was really confusing. It may be obvious to the seasoned RPG'er, but this is aimed to target the light and simple audience.

Will there be a hardcover version of this? I much prefer hardcovers and would wait if there will be. :)

Why does the cover of this book look strikingly similar to D100 Dungeons??

No preview?
No information on what the "new streamlined system" is?
No information on the content (and whether it includes an adventure)?

I'm a fan of your games, and love "Cryptworld", "Majus" and "Labyrinth Lord", but I do wonder, why do you make it so hard for the people already interested in your games to give you money.

Hi, the preview seems to have a glitch. It should be visible. I'll see what I can do. The system is similar to basic but uses 2d6.

Thanks for fixing the preview. The game does look nice - there are some minor typos, but the layout is pretty OK. I think including a simple stocked dungeon would be nice, and something similar in complexity to "Tomb of Sigyfel" would be a welcome addition. But I like the design choices, the simplification of the character sheet, and how comprehensive the monster tables are. I think that, besides the intended use, it's going to work well as a beer & pretzels introductory OSR game. I'll give that a shot soon, and add a review shortly after.

Dan, thanks for adding a preview for this. At your convenience can you do the same for Clone Farm?

Thanks! Yes absolutely I think it can be a beer & pretzels game. It could be run like a board game.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
