A Land Where Legends Walk

Drawing enthusiastically on Greek mythology, the revised and re-imagined Scarred Lands nonetheless retains its place as a modern fantasy RPG setting. This is a world shaped by gods and monsters, and only the greatest of heroes can expect to be counted among them. The most populous continent of Scarn, Ghelspad, plays host to vast unexplored regions, hides unsolved riddles from ancient cultures, and taunts adventures with the promise of undiscovered riches hidden among the ruins of older civilizations.

Yet the myths of the Scarred Lands are relatively recent events. The effects of the Titanswar still ripple through the world, and the heroines and villains of many of these stories are part of living memory, if not still living.

The Award-Winning Fantasy Setting Returns

Scarred Lands has been a favorite fantasy setting since the release of the Creature Collection for the d20 System in 2000. In subsequent years, over 40 titles were published for Scarred Lands, making it one of the most fully supported fantasy RPG settings ever and the premiere product line of Sword & Sorcery Studios.

Now, Onyx Path Publishing and Nocturnal Media have partnered to bring this cherished fantasy setting back to your gaming table!

Begin your adventure with the free adventure Gauntlet of Spiragos!

Does anyone have an example of the premium color compared to standard color?
How do these quality levels compared to the one I can get at LFGS’s?

The flavor and feel of the setting has been sapped away, plot hooks resolved, and history retconned. This is really only good for 5E conversions of monsters and mechanics from 3E. The setting elements are better ignored in favor of the initial few setting books - Relics & Rituals, the original Creature Collection, Divine & the Defeated, and the Ghelspad book.

And even the mechanical updates are dubious because the authors decided that the PC races should be more powerful than 5E player races typically are.

Shame to see these books continue in the direction of the original set, where most of the major conflicts have been resolved & "feel good" wins the day. Like playing in Star Wars, where if you are very lucky, you may get to watch Luke destroy the Death Star or be personally killed by Darth Vader. It was stunning when the novelizations came out, effectively solving the Forsaken Elf situation with the introduction of a 60th level NPC (!). Here we see that maintained by "Redeeming" & thus, trashing, both of the previous Vigil Watch books & the tension gained there.

Got mine today quality is good and I am mostly happy with it. However what happened to the forsaken elves? This feels like a very chopped version of the world so far.

Hi Felicia. The SLPG focuses on Ghelpsad, and since forsaken elves are from Termana, they were left out. However, they do appear in the appendices to the new version of The Wise and the Wicked! (https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/204371/The-Wise--the-Wicked-2nd-Edition-5e-OGL)

is this only an players handbook upgraded to scarred lands and superseeds the PHB at all? or is it an additional book to play in the scarred lands?

This book is the setting guide for Scarred Lands - it still requires the PHB to play, although it offers new classes, races, etc., some of which actually do supersede the ones found in the core rules.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
