PAVIS & BIG RUBBLE COMPANION (D.C.): VOL. 01: WELCOME TO NEW PAVIS — 1619 S.T.

[The 'Pavis Grand Plan' campaign, developed with the assistance of Greg Stafford]

**With full-color interior illustrations by Dario Corallo**

The Hero Wars loom, and the old order begins to falter.
Adventurers from distant lands are drawn to this relic of the ancient Dragon Empire.
Not just for treasure and glory, but for something more.

Could it really be the case that the old rumors are true?
That the mysteries of Pavis City have somehow endured the centuries?
That the grand experiment begun by Pavis himself never actually stopped?

Grab your Great Axe, hop onto your Zebra, and call for your trusty Dwarf Companion!

The Old City Needs You!

THE ORIGINAL SERIES

Way back at the dawn of time (well, 20 years ago) rabid RuneQuest/Glorantha fan, Ian Thomson — also then a student of Professional Writing & Editing, teamed up with Tentacles Press. Their mission? To publish his epic 5-year (real-time) Pavis & Big Rubble campaign (run originally in the UK, and at that time running again in Australia).

Eventually this resulted in eight books:

- An intro section in an issue of Ye Booke of Tentacles (YBoT),
- Five stand-alone volumes, and
- Two Tradetalk special editions.

Much of which has been out of print now for quite some time.

"What stood out to me as a player in the original campaign was the scope. It was so immersive that you felt like you were part of the world. Ingenious enough that you never saw what was coming next, and broad enough that every Adventurer could run their own agenda. I have honestly never played a campaign that was so well put together. Everyone raves about Six Seasons in Sartar. This ranks right up with it for me."
Philipp 'Leela Ten-Feather' Grawe

PAVIS EXPERT

Ian was also engaged in a detailed correspondence with Greg Stafford (creator of Glorantha and head of Issaries Inc. at that time) about Old Pavis and the long-rumored 'Pavis Grand Plan'.

The idea of an official 'Pavis Grand Plan adventure arc' was formally discussed.
Agreements were made on what could be in the fanzines and what gems should be held back for professional publication.

In two consecutive years Ian was named as official Issaries Inc, 'Pavis Expert'.
In 2002 he won the Issaries Inc. award for best Gloranthan short story.
And he was one of the writers for Storm Tribe: The Cults of Sartar.

TIME MOVES ON

Presumably other things were happening over at Issaries HQ.

Discussions about Old Pavis trailed off after 18 months, and some years later Greg apparently dropped the 'Pavis Grand Plan' idea.

But for a time it was a going concern, under deep and complex discussion.
Many elements of which were included in the Companion series.

Among the ideas not included in the fanzines at the time were:
- the campaign finale — the 'big reveal' as it were,
- numerous other hints, clues and background details that would have been in an official series.

THE PAVIS & BIG RUBBLE COMPANION — DIRECTOR’S CUT

This is the first volume in a hugely expanded re-release of the original Companion series. This time with no restraints on the unfolding Grand Plan reveals — eventually including its culmination as the Old City rises again!

This is 'old school' stuff, all updated to the new rules system (RQG), but written in the classic style of gameplay (RQ2). Focused around independent adventurers in search of wealth and glory, who slowly but surely become more and more connected with the Cult of Pavis and its allies, and end up being Champions of the Old City!

As with the original series, the Director's Cut is designed as an extension on the original official Pavis & Big Rubble sourcebooks. You will need a version of each of those as the backdrop for this material.

A CAMPAIGN SERIES

This is the first book in a full (and we mean 'full') campaign. Until we have finished putting it all together (some months more work to go) we won't know exactly how many volumes, but a series of 10 publications is realistic.

Vols. 1-3 will have a larger proportion of background material to adventures, as the scene is very firmly set, and character generation material included etc.
After them (and the later Rough Guide to Pavis City guidebook), the ratio will switch — as the Pavis Grand Plan Campaign unfolds with increasingly furious inevitability.

Hi Ian,

Thanks a lot for the great book, looking forward for the next ones.

Could you please consider making errata and player handouts available to POD only customers?

Cheers

Happily there is minimal important errata for the POD of Vol. 01
Only a couple of title issues (plus of course the new map handout, which is not really errata of course, more of a bonus bit)
But yes, this has been my goal all along.
I'll get our illustrious drivethru person to check again if it is possible to have a handout with the POD.
Initial investigation seemed to indicate that it wasn't :(
In the meantime, if you have an account on basicroleplaying.org I can make the errata handout available there

Also, errata for each POD will of course be included in the immediately following POD.
So if people only buy hardcopies it will be in there
Fingers crossed of course that all Vols. make POD status
Vol. 02 POD should be available later this month :)

Unless I’m mistaken I think you have a title mismatch on page 15 where you have a second Zebraside title where it should be Badside.

Yes, thanks for that. Sadly just too late for the POD version, but updated now in the PDF. Errors are often endless in large and complex books, and I already spotted 3 others (thankfully very small) since the POD was finalised. So there will be another update of the PDF at some point. Likely November when Vol. 04 is released. (I also spotted two major ones just before the POD was finalised.) POD for Vol. 01 is currently awaiting production of a proof for final review.

Love your books and looking forward to the next one!

I have a question. On page 125 you write that Yelorna Starbringer provides the special rune magic Lighten Darkness and See in Darkness. I can't find either of those spell anywhere, not in Big Rubble page 14 nor in the Red Book of Magic or anywhere else – what I am I missing?

Hope you can help.

Hi there. Let me look. Hmm, well 'See in Darkness' should really just be 'Catseye' (which she gets from Yelmalio, as mentioned in her cult write-up in Big Rubble). 'Lighten Darkness' is a different error in that it is a new thing that is not explained anywhere. Unfortunately I just saw this message after the final copy of Vol. 01 has gone up here on Drivethru and been sent for POD conversion. However, that is not the case for Vol. 02. A new pdf copy just went up here, but it's not the final version. So I'll go and find somewhere to put a small entry on Yelorna in Vol. 02 now, and clarify this information and add a few new other bits and pieces. This new version won't go up straight away, but likely in a few weeks.

There is a perfect spot in Vol. 02 on p75 where Yelorna is already mentioned as an ally of the Rubble Spirit Tradition. I'm extending this little section now

Here are the relevant snippets:
See in Darkness: See Catseye (RQG: p322) except that its duration is until dawn rather than 12hrs.
Lighten Darkness (1RP, Touch, Temporal, Stackable):
A Rune version of ‘Light’ (RQG: p263). Its brightness is greater than that spirit magic spell, illuminating an area of 20m radius, and can neutralize Darkwall & Darkwalk.
All spells are associated with the Fire/Sky Rune

Hello there. Thanks for your interest. We are looking at July as the magic month: the release of Vol. 03, an updated cover for Vol. 01, and the POD version of Vol. 01. Things are rolling along, so we feel this is still a realistic goal. :)

Hi John
It's hard to estimate exactly. In the Directors' Cut of the series I am taking the time to (a) fill in blanks, and (b) revise - thanks to volunteers - all to the RQG system. Vol 01 is about 50% new, and 50% content in the original versions. I am also re-ordering everything more logically, and including Homeland info or equivalent.
You can see from the index (available by clicking the 'Full-Size Preview' link beneath the image) exactly what's in Vol. 01. I'm mostly putting the core background material in Vols. 01 & 02, and less critical background material in Vol. 03. (Vol. 02 is Old Pavis and is nearly done. Vol. 03 is Pavis County & the Zola Fel Valley.)
By filling in the blanks, I mean the extra material I would have added if I'd had the time originally, plus now that there is no official old school 'Pavis Secrets' publication series planned (as I was discussing with Greg way back when), I am no longer restrained on revealing the Grand Plan ideas we discussed. This too will...See more

Hi
How many pages is the pdf?
There is a reference to volume 1 in the description. Is this the whole companion or is it vol 1 of several volumes and if so how many?
Thank you

Page Count is listed in the stats on the right (201, with 196 being actual content)
Have requested Fabian at Tentacles Press to add some extra info about the nature of the series (thanks for pointing out that oversight)
It is a large major campaign - total volumes unknown as we are still putting it all together, but 7-10 easy)

I believe that there is a sales-threshold to cross and then POD becomes an option. If that sales threshold is reached I will definitely put aside the effort to prepare a POD-ready copy. I am also sure Tentacles Press would be only too pleased to do it independently, but I'm not sure if that's allowed.

Is this a pro or anti Lunar campaign, or possibly either?

Hi there
Valid question, and not the first person to ask.
The whole thing was originally written very specifically as an anti-Lunar Campaign, pitting the re-emerging underdogs of the Old City against the Occupying Power.
(I studied Romano-British History at University)
If I had any inkling back then that I would one day be publishing it, I might have written options for Lunar Heroes too
But one big theme is that some Lunars are aware of the Old Pavic magic and are here to plunder it for themselves, which goes against the best outcome for the Old City.
They want independence and the unfettered freedom to continue Pavis' plan exactly as Pavis wanted, not some bastardized Lunar version which would be (let's face it) for the benefits of the Lunars working with a subjugated client society) :(
So, various specific Lunars are powerful primary antagonists across this campaign.
I guess Lunar Heroes who were revolutionaries against their own regime could be factored in...See more

Thanks for you great reply, and yeah, valid reasons for you not to.

I would like something different than the plucky underdog theme, but your work will make a fine addition to my fine collection!

I wonder if there is any mileage in a version with division in the Pavis peeps, some wanting to work with the Lunars to incorporate the Moon Rune and others not, and the same in the Lunars?...

Thanks once again.

A.

Yes, bringing in a different slant of the socio-political challenge could totally work. That would unfortunately involve rewriting and expanding the campaign of course, to change the focus and incorporate a bunch of new options and information. Sadly I simply do not have time to do this, as there is already massive amounts of extra work to do simply to convert it to RQG and fill in the necessary missing chunks from the plot just how it already is. If it all sells very well I guess that a book of revisions for this end could be possible later. For now, the endless hours of slog required for Vols. 2 and 3 are enough of a daunting task to be involved in! :)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
