Needs more aircraft, at least the ones illustrated in the rules. Needs Chinese aircraft as well. Su-27, F-16, F-4, J-10, J-20, Typhoon, Tornado, Gripen, Rafale, Mirage 2000, and all three F-35 models. Failing that, how about some clear guidelines on how to convert real-world aircraft to Sidewinder stats? Grim Reaper? I see what you did there. The Prowling Red Devil will be flying by to discuss this with you soon.

Hi Michael. I couldn't agree more. For launch, I primarily focused on aircraft that would be featured in the first adventure, Crossing the Rubicon. I'm working on an aircraft supplement that will include the aircraft you list and more! I do have guidelines that I follow, so I'll update the doc to include a page at the back with how I work out the stats. Great suggestion!

How did this slip past my daily check of DTRPG? I've been keeping my eyes open for air combat centric gaming! No matter- I've got you now and no amount of barrel-rolling or cobras will keep you out of my HUD box!
Seriously, I will be checking this system out. I'm looking forward to seeing how much realism you had to sacrifice for playability. There will be questions, I'm sure.

I welcome questions. I was in the same situation you were, keeping my eyes open for an air combat-centric game. I tried Night Witches. It's a pretty cool game but wasn't what I was looking for, so I decided to create one for OSRPG. You can post questions here or drop me an email at oneshotrpg.gm@gmail or reach out to me on Discord (Phzoul#5624).

Thank you for your reply, David. I notice that Sidewinder doesn't appear at your website, so is it a prototype. If so, it's an extremely tight, well-done one. I collaborated with clash Bowley at Flying Mice Games on In Harm's Way: Wild Blue. Wild Blue pretty much covers the same subject as Sidewinder, but in unfortunately excruciating detail. We are currently in the process of writing the second edition which will use the considerably simpler Starcluster 4 rules. I've been writing game stuff since the seventies and cowrote MiG KiLLERS for Gamescience with Rocky Russo (RIP). I have all of the BoP stuff and drag out every couple of months or so to see if I can bear to play it with all of its realistic detail. The latest iteration actually uses a real flight computer to do the math! So...why am I bothering with Sidewinder? Because sometimes you just need to calm down and have a cinematic adventure! Detail is nice for all of us airplane aficionados, but sometimes you just want to play a game. Sidewinder looks like...See more

Hey Michael. As with all of my products, Sidewinder is constantly evolving. My website is outdated because most of the activity is here on DTRPG. I added it to my to-do list. Wild Blue and MiG KILLERS sound pretty cool - pretty intense that a real flight computer is used. I can get lost in detail sometimes, but it's a hard sell with my regular gaming group. Also, thanks for the feedback. It is always welcome, and the more, the better. Email me a copy of your character if you get a chance, and let me know how your games go. Feel free to reach out to me on Discord and let me know if you have any more thoughts.

Thanks, David! Wild Blue is pretty much Sidewinder on steroids, using the original Starcluster % engine. At the time of publication, we included a metric ton of stuff with a lifepath-style character generation system and a "relatively" complex air combat game involving generating energy points and then spending said points on movement, altitude change and maneuver. Like Sidewinder, Wild Blue had a PK type BVR game and a WVR dogfight game. The game was supposed to be the toolkit to make an air-centric PMC who would hire out to provide training cadre and fighting forces for a country that wouldn't otherwise be able to resist a well-equipped enemy. The concept was loosely based on the manga and anime' Area 88 and also modern techno-thrillers, both movies and novels. MiG KiLLERS was a boardgame designed to satisfy the need for a modern air combat game that would be better than SPI's Air War (Dunnigan and Isby). It was the first air combat boardgame to incorporate g-forces and induced drag and thus had a...See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
