Cinematic Environs - Survival

Lost in the Wilderness!

A scout scrambles down hill, panicked that the hunters on her trail will hear the cries of her fallen pack lizard. A squire sneezes, farts, and belches his way back to his tent, dropping handfuls of half eaten exotic nuts. A group of starved and thirsty explorers pass around a small cup of gray water with single bites of rabbit meat floating in it.

In a fantasy world with vast expanses of wilderness between islands of civilization, the limits of the player characters are often tested when undertaking the simplest journey. This can mean dealing with some of the most basic daily needs including food, water, and shelter, as well as dealing with illness, poisonous creatures and wild beasts.

The question then becomes, how do we make basic survival exciting without the necessity of adding bandit ambushes or troll attacks? While these random events can be fun if used sparingly, the players can become jaded to these contrived encounters if they are used every time they travel. By making the very acts of passing through a forest, setting up camp, building a shelter, making a fire, gathering food, and finding water an adventure, the DM can transform even the simplest journey into a grand adventure.

This book will provide some creative options to keep what is often the least interesting part of the game – getting from point A to point B – interesting and memorable. These will include the use of more evocative descriptors for rations such as salted pork, dried mushrooms, and hardtack instead of rations. It could include finding potable water, building a shelter against the coming rain, or caring for mounts. Additionally, the book will cover a variety of threats from hungry predators to hypothermia to venomous insects. There can also be natural solutions to these threats, such as, herbal remedies, pest repellents, and securing a campsite.

Also included in this books is a new character background, new equipment, 200 random events, and a new character sheet specifically designed for Cinematic Environs!

Any plans for converting this to CoC, like Desert and Arctic?

Yes! I'm currently working on Mountains, but Survival is definitely on the list for conversion. Others might not translate as well, such as Aerial or Aquatic, since they are more magic heavy and a lot less likely to come up in a Call of Cthulhu game.

Any chance for an urban ruins survival guide?

And for future reference,if you are going to have POD options a table of contents or index would be very helpful.

We are currently working on our largest Cinematic Environs book to date: Cityscapes! This will cover many things including some ruins.

That's a good point about the contents and index. Truth be told, we are planning on eventually combining all of these into one large tome with additional content, and it will definitely include contents and index.

Thanks so much for you feedback! We are listening.

hey there Alex and Davae, I'm VERY excited to hear about the Cityscapes book, and the combined book. it's been a full year since you posted this comment -- is there an ETA for the dropping of the Cityscape title? (I suppose it is far too late to add a suggestion?)

I've bought every title in this series in its print version, but i would totally upgrade to an expanded "tome."

Is there also a plan to combine and print the Adventure Keys series? I've got all of those as well, and even though my group is playing "The Strange" by Monte Cook and Bruce Cordell I find that series well worth the time and attention.

We will likely combine the Adventure Keys int a single book at some point. If for no other reason than to make it print-on-demand. :)

No ETA on Cityscapes. All suggestions are welcome.

Is this the same as the other three earlier Environs and will it and the others get a printer friendly version?

Thanks,
Tom

It is related to the others in the series, but focuses more on general survival that applies to all environs.

We've been busy putting together various projects, but I will see about making printer friendly versions available next week. Thanks for the interest and feedback.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
