Aquilae: Western Realm Gazetteer

ADD TO WISHLIST >
Selected Option:

The largest, most comprehensive, most detailed fantasy Gazetteer and Campaign Setting ever created.

Enough content to fuel hundreds, if not thousands, of gaming sessions, or to inspire creative enhancements to any campaign setting.

Free Sample!

Check out the FREE 88-page Arvadarre Gazetteer, which covers one of the 21 nations in this full Gazetteer.

Optional Atlas Companion

Check out the Western Realm Atlas, an optional companion that includes hundreds of additional maps.

What Is This?

This Gazetteer describes the Western Realm of Aquilae, a fantasy realm that serves as host to all of Infinium Game Studio's adventures and books.

  • It's 64,000 square miles of intricately-detailed terrain, cities, ruins, and points of interest.
  • Over 1,790 points of interest, each one with the potential for one or more gaming sessions.
  • Over 1,180 cities, strongholds, castles, and ruins.
  • 21 nations.

Use this book to run endless campaigns in the campaign setting of Aquliae, use this Gazetteer as a supplement to other IGS adventures, mine it ruthlessly for inspiration for your own personal campaign setting.

Or, use this Gazetteer to augment or inspire your own campaign setting.  The maps and points of interest have been designed to be immediately usable in any fantasy campaign setting.

This Gazetteer, and the companion books that will further enhance it, represent decades of play and percolation, thousands of hours of drawing and design... and, we feel, the very best of what the Infinium Game Studio approach to indie fantasy RPG content is capable of creating.

Instantly Usable

If you're already familiar with the mapping approach Infinium Game Studio takes, the following will come as no surprise.  We're players and G/DMs ourselves, across decades and dozens of game systems; we recognize that a map can be gorgeous, but is often only as useful as it is helpful during gameplay.

The entire book has been designed to be system-neutral, and immediately useful for any G/DM or player, in any fantasy tabletop roleplaying game, in any campaign setting.

Ultra Detail, Ultra Inspiration

The Western Realm Gazetteer is the result of decades of homebrew planning, adventuring, and personal inspiration.

In thorough development for over three years, this map contains nearly 3,000 points of interest.

National Profiles:

Let's be honest, here: the Western Realm Gazetteer is really a world-building book, plus 21 separate Gazetteers, all in one mammoth 840-page book.

The bulk of the book consists of National Profiles: a separate massive chapter dedicated to each of the Western Realm's 21 nations.

Each nation includes all of the information, background, context, and tools to immediate run adventures within it, including all of the following:

  • Quick, at-a-glance orientation for the time-pressed G/DM: What to Expect Here, So You Find Yourself Here, Why Would You Come Here, Just Passing Through, Starting a Campaign Here, and Adventure Seats to get things started quickly.
  • National profile, tables to randomize citizen Alignment, summaries of Geography, Renown, and the country's Current State.
  • Two Rumors & Lore tables: One for the nation overall, and a second just for its Leadership.  Roll a die, and dozens of entries breathe life into each country in an organic manner.  (There's also an introduction section discussing the rules mechanics of using Rumors & Lore in your game.)
  • People & Culture: Discussing the inhabitants of the country, tables to randomize their ancestry and culture, and a table to randomize the Name of a randomly-encountered citizen (with phonemes matching the etymology of that nation's settlement names).
  • Politics, discussing SWOT, Trade, Allies, Neutralities, and Enemies.
  • Government, Rule, and Leadership: An overview of who rules here, how succession is determined, and extensive notes about the current ruler(s), each with custom artwork.  Each rule has Ancestry, Appearance, Description, Demeanor, Secrets & Lies, Background/Childhood, Style of Rule, Strengths/Weaknesses/Motivations, and a Cabinet, plus a table to randomly determine the style of Government of settlements in that nation, in context by type of settlement.
  • Settlements & Ruins section: Random village and ruin names (which match the naming etymologies of that nation's cities), heatmaps of each type of settlement, sample system-neutral settlement profiles (don't worry; there's an introduction section introducing rules for these mechanics in any TTRPG), and tables to randomly select a city with mapcell references.
  • Point of Interest pages: Each of Tribute (religious), Military, Villainous, Magical, and Faction gets a table listing all of that type of POI in this nation (with a d20/d100 index to randomly select one), and a heatmap.
  • Mapcells: Each of the 137 mapcells receives a full-page map with temperature and climate overlays, and tables listing out major settlements and points of interest in that mapcell... with tables to randomly pick one.

Repeating Points of Interest:

  • Over 1,400 map locations, comprised of 66 different types of distinct phenomena, structures, or major effects.
  • Caves, Shrines, Vaults, Templtes, Caches, Ancient Halls, Cursed Ships, Training Centers, Cathedrals, Garrisons, Gravethorpes, Prisons, Spires, and more!
  • Each type of repeating POI is designed to be an adventure opportunity unto itself, and the rich disposition of them ensure that no matter where you are on the enormous continental map, there's always plenty to do and pursue!

Unique Points of Interest:

  • 384 individual locations of significance.
  • Each one has been designed to be a potential adventure unto itself, with multiple sessions worth of adventure opportunity.
  • Sprinkled liberally throughout the continent to ensure that every place in the Realm is a place of interest and adventure.

Settlements:

  • Extensive rules and mechanics for dynamically creating your own cities and ruins.
  • Over a thousand ities, strongholds, castles, and ruins.
  • Each settlement has a name created using real-world phonetic roots based on the etymological mapping of the nation that settlement is in (for example, the nation of Arvadarre has settlements whose names recall real-world French phonemes and composition).
  • Thousands more villages and hamlets.

What's Included

  • 840-page Western Realm Gazetteer PDF.
  • The WRG Digital Resource Companion: An Excel-compatible file listing out essential information about each of the 21 nations, plus each of the thousands of cities and points of interest, organized to make it click-click easy to search, sort, and filter to know what the party might encounter during session time.

Even More, Soon!

Coming soon: even more content and tools for the Western Realm of Aquilae:

  • Point of Interest detail: Detailed descriptions, heatmaps, quest seeds, and more for each and every repeating and unique POI
  • Infinite Adventures: Dynamic adventure seeds, quests, outlines, and plots to make conducting spur-of-the-moment one-shots, detailed multi-session delves, or entire campaigns as easy as rolling dice with zero preparation
  • Settlement Detail: Listing, profiles/stats, population composition, and zoomed-in regional images for each of over 1,500 cities, strongholds, castles, and ruins
  • Solo Adventuring detail for those wishing to explore Aquilae on their own
  • Exploration Kit making it easy and possible to create your own version of Aquilae, populating it dynamically with adventure content and POI either playing solo or with a traditional group
  • Thousands more maps
  • Much more!

Hi and thanks for making such a great book. I just wanted to let you know that the portrait of Grand Protector Elmflake on page 773 covers a large portion of the Secrets & Lies section for her.

Hi - On page 57 there is a sample Settlement Profile and on page 58 it goes on to say that this book contains one specific settlement profile for each national capital and 5 default settlement profiles for each size of settlements

Every Settlement Profile, whether specific or default, is missing Information. I don't know how exactly to reference the missing sections but on the Sample Settlement Profile, it's the sections that contain the Population and the following text "Magically Attuned, Intolerant (Elves), Superstitious, Sage, Impoverished"

Is this something you are able to address with an updated PDF? Also, is there a timeline for the Settlements of the Western Realm?

Thanks

The full preview link seems to be broken ("Not found. The requested URL was not found on this server.").

Also, could you tell me what is the difference between this Gazetteer and the Infinite Adventures Omnibus? At first glance, it seems to be the same thing? Is the difference that the Omnibus is focused on describing the points of interest, while here the history, current affairs, etc. of the setting of Aquilae is the main course?

Hi—Thanks for pointing out the preview issue; I just requested a refresh but it doesn’t seem
To be working yet unfortunately. In the meantime you can grab the free Arvadarre Gazetteer which gives a feel for one of the >20 nations in the full Gazetteer.
https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/395578/Aquilae-Arvadarre-Gazetteer

In terms of the difference: the Gazetteer is a guide to the campaign setting, and provides massive detail for each and every bit of the Eurasian-sized landmass. Nation profiles, politics, intrigue, history, and all manner of inspiration for your own games, including rules to generate your own riffs on some details. It’s perfect to start a new campaign, but also designed to provide inspiration for your own campaign setting or to augment any existing one.

The Infinite Adventures Omnibus is an adventure seed book. It contains over 150 points of interest, each designed to be worthy of its own separate book (someday!). Each POI contains 4-10+...See more

Strange isn't it, The poi's contained here are pulled out a resold in another publication, the infinite adventures volumes. I own the IA omnibus and so far all of the POI's in them are in this. I have noticed that in a lot of your books, content is recycled and sold as something else with a tiny bit of additional content. I'd wager that by the time the IA omnibus is complete, totalling 6 volumes, it will miraculously contain all 66 different types of distinct phenomena, structures, or major effects contained in this book.

Hi Martyn--Short answer, yes, you're correct in terms of the relationship between WRG and IA, but I'm not sure why that seems a source of frustration, because that's been explicitly the point, and it literally could not have happened in a single book.

Longer thoughts:
I'm genuinely confused by your comment. The Infinite Adventures volumes are *intended* to describe the points of interest presented in the Gazetteer. That's literally the entire point of the IA books. Aside from the names of the POIs, I don't think there's anything about them that's being "resold" in the IA books.

Originally, I had absolutely planned for the Gazetteer itself to contain all of that description... but as you yourself know, the Gazetteer is 840 pages, the absolute maximum that DTRPG allows; there was literally zero room to even describe the POIs in this tome. Hence the IA volumes being separate things. I'm actually glad, though, that there is a pagecount cap, because it's allowed a much...See more

Don't be fooled, you will need most the other Books for "filling in the gaps" this book presents, consider this 800 pages of inspiration and maps only. I'll break down the description above for you.

Over 1,400 map locations, comprised of 66 different types of distinct phenomena, structures, or major effects: This is true but, POI's in this book serve no purpose other than a point on a map, there is no outline as to it's function, it's left up to you to decide. Or use other books to generate.
384 individual locations of significance. Again yep, except the only significant thing about them is the name. 0 details here. Other books needed

The main reason for me buying this book.
"Extensive rules and mechanics for dynamically creating your own cities and ruins". Nope again, it's 34 pages of a few tables. Nothing extensive at all. i mean, 3/4 of the 800 odd pages are maps. Isn't that what the atlas is for; or are they the exact same maps in that book? lol...See more

Hi Martyn--

Again, I'm genuinely confused. Where is the "66" coming from? There's 446 points of interest; I know this number for sure because I keep track of the enormity in a giant spreadsheet. :)

Agreed the POIs have names and locations but no descriptions. There's literally no room in the book for it and that's why it's being written and provided in subsequent publications.

"Nope again"

You will indeed absolutely find the "extensive rules and mechanics for dynamically creating your own cities and ruins" specifically on pages 55-87, and additional ruin randomization tables with naming etymology specific to each country in each nation's section.

"3/4 of the 800 odd pages are maps"

Yes. As someone who owns dozens of gazetteers published by other companies and people, I can assure you this is hardly unusual.

I'm sorry that you feel you have wasted your money with this book. ...See more

Thanks for replying at the very least, but I think you design your products to be this way. Yes the POI's are listed only, but if you had just included zoomed out maps for the 21 detailed nations, you may of had space for the locations. Then reserved the map detail for the atlas. But I think you know what you are doing.

Most of that book is maps and icons with names. 21 very detailed write ups of the nations too I'll give you that.
But my expectation of inspiration (big check here) AND "extensive tools" (34 pages covering the basics out of 840) to create my own, was lacking.

I have a few of your books now because I enjoy the quality, and for the most part the content is incredibly useful and detailed. I just feel you need to be way more forthcoming with the descriptions. Saying things like "384 individual locations of significance" is not significant if it's only a point and a name on a map. In my opinion. Fortunately I didn't pay full price. £30 normal price...See more

"you design your products to be this way"

You give me too much credit, I think. :) My first book was pitched to backers as a 64-page adventure and ended up being more than 1,000 pages. That's my "design", really: keep going until all of the cool stuff that occurs to me is on a page.

Each of the "locations of significance" was designed to be interesting enough to be its own separate book, and in IA, I think you see a bit of that. In most cases, what's in IA is just the tip of an iceberg for that POI that I hope eventually to be able to write down.

You, just as every player or customer, decide what value is to you. But I know for certain that there's nothing like the Western Realm Gazetteer, that has ever been published. Because otherwise I would own it. :)

"Extortion" feels a disproportionate accusation... but if you simply mean "Infinite Adventures provides elaboration that I as a customer hoped would be present,...See more

T--As I've stated, I'm in no position to make how-to videos really, either from a production standpoint or an available-time standpoint. FlexAI is pretty straightforward; just use the descriptions in the book to pick the right table, then roll!

In terms of the Gazetteers, the "need to see it in more details before I go buy it" perspective is exactly why I made the 88-page freebie. Hope you enjoy it!

I’ve been reading through the first few nation entries and honestly, I really like the ideas going on in there. The maps are also quite nice and full of details. Reminds me of the Hârn setting in how the mapping goes, though this one is much more about high fantasy than medieval Europe simulator.

I believe my biggest issue is that I’m hooked and hungry for more! There are many, many details that I’d like more information about but are going to be in other books. While I know giving dates for such a project is a bit hard, I wonder if there’s some way to know or get updates on the other books? A website or blog of sort. (Campaign Setting, Religions and Deities, Eastern Continent, etc.)

Thanks for the kind words! Glad you're enjoying. Would of course love a review and/or rating at some point once you've played with it more :)

There is the infiniumGameStudio website, where we try to post at least quarterly about the State of the Realm, and where various books in the pipeline stand. IGS is a one-man shop, and that one man has a full-time day job and three kids, so my ability to predict release dates is legendarily poor, but at least that should give you a sense of things on a regular basis.

Specifically for WRG, though, I'm hard at work on the Adventure Book, which should publish in June (fingers crossed!). Beyond that, the Settlement Guide should publish in July, and then it's a toss-up as to whether I write the Hexcrawl Toolkit or some more promised Solo-related content first for August.

Hang in there! I cannot in any way guarantee dates, but I can all but guarantee that it it'll be worth the wait :)

Hi Cora--How embarrassing! Thanks for pointing that out; it's been corrected.

The Gazetteer is FAR more than the Atlas. The Atlas is an optional accessory to this Gazetteer, though either can be used on its own.

The Gazetteer contains some of the maps that are in the Atlas, but includes description and detail for every single one. The Atlas was simply, well, an Atlas, a book of pictures of maps; this Gazetteer consists of much more text and tables and description and tools and content than maps.

Hope that helps! Thanks for reaching out!

These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
