“People don’t need a reason to be awful to each other. They just need to survive. But people don’t need a reason to survive, either. They just need each other.”

— Tribeca Rockaway, sniper of the Dead Heroes gang

No one knows how long it’s been since the world was blasted with nuclear radiation and became infested with the undead. The survivors of the Fall were the first strain of deviation of the human condition and were able to make it through the rapidly spreading epidemic. Finding a community of decent size in this world is rare; finding one that has any concept of equality or morality is rarer still.

Oh, and people have the unnerving ability to come back from the dead, regrown from the very virus that destroyed the world.

Some highlights of Dystopia Rising: Evolution include:

  • Rules for creating characters for 24 different Strains, variations on humanity that survived the Fall.
  • Details on the powers of faith and psionics.
  • Advice on running action-adventure stories, webs of personal intrigue, and procedural investigations.
  • Dozens of antagonists, including a variety of zombies and raiders to use in your series.

Welcome to the Evolution

They Came From Beyond the GraveThey Came From Beyond the Grave!

They Came from Beyond the Grave! is a dramatic, hammy, and horrifying tabletop roleplaying game encompassing the shock, terror, eroticism, and humor of 1970s horror. This game allows you to play with all the magnificent content from the movies of Hammer, Amicus, and Roger Corman, and promises the fun and thrills of the horror movie genre!

In They Came from Beyond the Grave!, you play humans faced with the horrors of the supernatural. You’ll find yourself pitted against vampires, werewolves, ghosts, and constructed critters, along with demons, slashers, and THE DEVIL HIMSELF. Adventures range from the one-shot exploration of a haunted house, to the multi-era play across the 19th century and 1970s.

They Came from Beyond the Grave! contains a mix of serious threat, unmitigated ham, and nonsensical farce. We never tell you what is amusing and what is not, but we do provide the tools to make a seriously fun game incorporating all the elements of 1970s horror movies. This game provides rules for funny quips and amusing cinematics for incorporation in a story, along with dozens of special powers and story devices.

I have one question.

Only this book for play or you'll need another book(s) to complete for a decent game/a decent quantity of options (for players and DM)?

Thx.

I'm interested. Does this use the newer Vampire 5e/Scion 2E rules system with a set DN target or is this the older Storyteller system with the variable Difficulty Numbers?

Dystopia Rising Evolution uses the Storypath system. The same system is also used in Trinity Continuum and Scion 2nd Edition. But I think Vampire 5e uses a different system(?)

You roll against a fixed target number (8) and if you achieve at least one success, you can add enhancements to your result. Each enhancement increases your successes by one. You can get enhancements from items, skill tricks und egdes (these are the special abilities in this game).

As Patrick said, the ‘Storypath’ system used here is the same as used in Scion 2e and The Trinity Continuum. It puts a big emphasis on action, and incorporates some modern ideas used in other games.

V5 is it’s own thing (I’m not sure the system is given a moniker anymore) and emphasizes drama and horror, although it may start sharing aspects of its system with the upcoming Werewolf: The Apocalypse 5th edition.

V5 and the Storyteller System are owned by White Wolf/Paradox. Eschaton Media partnered with Onyx Path to create Dystopia Rising: Evolution; Paradox wasn't involved. DRE uses Onyx Path's own Storypath System, the same system used for Scion 2e, the Trinity Continuum, and the upcoming They Came from Beneath the Sea!.

There's a free Storypath System Preview available separately on DriveThruRPG if you'd like to get a peek at it.

Thanks Mate. It was more of a reference to if the system uses a fixed difficulty number rather than the variable difficulties of the earlier storyteller systems (which kind of irked me). I much prefer the fixed DN. Picked this up and looks great!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
