Blades in the Deck is a series of card decks containing play aids for people playing and running Blades in the Dark!

This is the Chracters deck, useful for creating a character quickly, for any playbook. Why use a deck? You can limit the information “exposition” you must absorb to make a character, but keep an element of choice by choosing from the options you draw. Great for one-shots or for refreshing long-running games!

In this deck, you'll find cards covering all the character aspects important to a scoundrel:

  • 4 instructions cards
  • 28 playbook cards
  • 15 heritage cards
  • 9 background cards
  • 9 social circle cards
  • 9 vice cards
  • 7 scoundrel kit cards
  • 6 hunting creature cards

Useful for players to create a character quickly—maybe because their main just landed in jail!—or for GMs looking to build a quick scoundrel NPC, build connections to the city, and more.

Draw some cards, make some choices, and get your new scoundrel into the action! The speed, focus, and flexibility of card-driven character generation will delight novice and veteran players of Blades in the Dark. Instead of absorbing every option before making a decision, players can draw a range of possibilities that are easy to understand and provide interesting directions for a new character.

The playbook "builds" in the Blades in the Dark rulebook are on cards; draw two, and pick one! Players can also draw cards for their heritage, background, and vice. In addition, there are mini-decks providing new options for their social circles, and new sets of starting equipment that they can substitute for the default (or mix in some alternative gear). Also, Hound characters who start with an animal companion have a mini-deck with some unique creatures of Doskvol (as well as some odd ways they might bond with their beast).

Heritage cards provide possible first and last names based on culture, and a resource card has suggestions for possible war names for scoundrels; this can help players making characters, and also GMs who need a scoundrel at a moment's notice! Running Blades in the Dark is a high-improvisation style for GMs, and this deck can give them quick inspiration. Gear cards can provide treasure stashes, a quick playbook draw can reveal the rival scoundrel coming for them, and a handful of Background and Heritage cards can describe people of interest in the smoky tavern. The social circles have NPC groups with names and brief descriptions, serving as a quick conspiracy or options for a messenger or agent.

Whether you want to get to the action in a one-shot, or you want fresh game play for a veteran game table, the Character Deck will make Blades in the Dark accessible quickly. The exciting flavors and possibilities for new combinations and peculiar options will keep players and GMs coming back for more.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
