Welcome to Novus 2e!

Taking Novus to the next level, Novus 2e is a skill based system with no levels or classes.

NOTE: This is the full version of this edition. The Bare Bones version is missing artwork and possible internal links and bookmarks that this edition has..

The basic mechanics are simple, roll 2d10, add mods and meet or beat the Target Number! But that is just the beginning! There are flourishes, such as exploding dice, the Novus Roll, and Fumbles. There are also a variety of ways that the dice, while still following the basic mechanics, can be interpreted!

Novus 2e includes:

  • 7 Races- Includes Human (2 types), High Elves, Wood Elves, Orcs, Dwarves, Gnomes, and Dwelfs
    • 5 Kindred templates - allows you to mix-n-match any 2 races allowing for both half-races and even quarter-racial mixes)
  • 15 Cultures - Each gives a bit of background flavor and ranks in verious skills.
  • 12 Taining Paths(3 each of 4 categories of character types)
    • Casters (Cleric, Magician, Mystic)
    • Fighters (Archer, Warder, Warrior)
    • Adepts (Bounty Hunter, Rogue, Scout)
    • Hybrids (Elemental Guard, Monk, Ranger)
  • 27 Skills - The 27 skills are divided into 5 groups of related skills. Each skill can be a Base skill (used for all variations of the skill), Specialties (each Specialty is learned as a separate skill), or Proficieny (one of a group of related skills)
  • 14 Special Skills - These are like skills except that they do not improve the way normal schools do.
  • 99 Background Options - 24 Disadvantages & 75 Gifts; each helps make your character unique!
  • 100 Combat Moves - The Basic Moves are free, the Advanced ones must be purchased. Combat Moves can affect many different aspects of combat, such as your skill bonus, how much damage is done, and some can even trigger Saving Throws from the targets to avoid special effects.
  • 7 Combat Styles - These packages allow you to learn a number of Combat Moves at a discount, along with a few special abilities available only to practitioners of the style.
  • 72 Spells - These are customizable spells, each having one or more Casting Options that may be chosen after your Casting Roll (yes, spell casting is a skill as well!). Plus we include 18 Cantrips (non-customizable) that may be learned.
  • 31 Monsters - We have a variety included here in the core book, allowing for a wide variety of potential encounters!

To make a character you follow a few simply steps
1) Select Race
2) Select Culture
3) Select Training Path
4) Select Background Options
5) Spend Character Points (on Kindred Templates, Skills, Combat Moves and Combat Styles, and Spells)
6) Tally up and Tally ho!

I've been aware of Novus for awhile but finally pulled the trigger after the RMU was released and realizing that they were not going to have the full game out for a long time given the responses received to questions about it.

Having received my hardcopy and reading it over I wish I had just picked Novus up first and skipped that other game altogether.

I'm planning to invest a lot of time (and money) into learning a new system and 'am really intrigued by Novus. It seems to have this intuitive and straight forward skill resolution mechanisms with some modern touches.

While scanning through the contents of the previews, the Libram Secundus (which product page title has a typo btw) and the reference document on the webpage I noticed a lack of certain "mundane sandbox-style" mechanisms like crafting items, economy (besides lodging prices) or trade&commerce (like you find in other classic RPGs like AD&D or Traveller).

I wonder if its provided somewhere, if it's planned or if it's just a deficit that many modern RPGs hold?

typos - the bane of my existence..... sigh......

I do have crafting rules, which will be coming out soon, and I am planning on expanding the commerce side of things as well, as I have some stuff written for it and other stuff that needs finishing.

When doing the core rules, I had to decide what was required for the basic game versus price points, as I wanted to make sure that the basic game was alwaysa good deal for what it contained. If I tried to put everything into it, it would have easily been triple the size and price.

Currently working on the Libram Arcana, which will expand the magic rules with item creation and spell creation rules as well (I might also release them separately as issues of Libram Secundus, to allow for mixing/matching and adding what you want (with the larger releases acting as something along the lines of a package deal type thing).).

Thanks for the fast reply, really appreciate it. This all sounds exciting!

I hope to see some of these additional moduls someday, I feel adding just more of the stuff the system already has (Character Classes, Items, skills etc.) might not be what Novus needs, just my 2cent :)

As a GM I like my systems to be a "complete package" - not necessary as one huge tome - but with supplements that belong too the same product line. Also a Zine like Libram Secundus is a great tool.

Training Paths, not Character Classes... :)

Most of the expansions I have planned are nothing more than additions to what is already there....

For example, I had about 42 Training Paths written up for playtesting, but only put 12 in the core rules., The Libram Aarcanis adds in more Training Paths (and more Schools of Magic), more spells, and the rules for item creation and spell creation

Then I will have a Libram Peritus (which will have the rest of the Taining Paths, and other skill based guidelines..... And Libram Creatura with more monsters, etc..

And then working on setting products..... Anwyn is the core setting, and there is a primer/overview for it available.

Essentially, all I am planning on doing is expanding what is there.

The only exception is psionics, which will be its own book and will work differently than magic.

Sorry to post this here but I'm not able to find a contact mail address whatsoever and there's no PM option on drivethru:
Tried to register on the Firehawk Forum to join discussions about Novus but now it tells me my account I registered and that was waiting for activation doesn't exist (?!).
Are there other public support platforms for Novus?

The discount was meant for those who purchased the PDF before the print version was available (to make sure that they ended up with a similar discount to those who purchased them together), but no worries, you can still use it if you want a second print copy. :)

Also keep an eye out for a coupon for the print book if you have already purchased the PDF, as one will be coming ($2.5 off for those who purchased the Beta/BareBones version, $5 off for those who purchased the full version PDF). I am getting ready to create the coupons as soon as the print version is ready to go on sale.

I'm looking at what I believe is the most up to date version (own the Beta and the newest update gave access to the final full pdf) and compared to the previous version, the bookmarks are all messed up.

For example, classes should be listed as:

Adepts:
- Bounty Hunter
- Rogue
- Scout

but are listed as

Adepts:
- Bounty Hunter
- - Rogue
- - - Scout

Same deal with cultures, talents, spells etc., to the point where bookmark entries will expand so widely you can't reasonably browse them anymore.

Doesn't affect the print book obviously, but should probably still be looked at for the pdf.

Ugh! I will fix them and upload corrected versions (one would think if you fix them once, they would stay fixed, but apparently not.....).

I am also trying to finish up a Quickstart that I can give away for free to make it easier for folks to try it -- working on making Pre-gens for it now.

Karl, please shoot me an email at tim@firehawkgames.biz and I will give you the coupon link.

About half the folks who purchased the PDF did not receive the coupon based on their DTRPG settings (to not allow contact from publishers).

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
