Intro

Stories from the Grave is a roleplaying game that faithfully emulates anthology-style horror comics, TV shows and movies. It is powered by the Intention System, the same rule set that powers Retrostar, though it has been extensively altered so that it accommodates the play style necessary to bring the source material to dripping, oozing, gore-soaked un-life.

• SftG is built around making it possible to play out several short stories in a single setting, with each one feeling exactly like the kinds of tales spun in the comics, shows and films of the genre.

• The game is powered by a heavily modified version of the Intention System (the ruleset used for Retrostar). It’s simple, narrative and encourages players to have plenty of control over how the story progresses.

• The system is fast and easy to learn. In fact, the actual rules take up just over 12 pages.

• Character creation is a very simple matter that takes 15 minutes or less.

• Players are rewarded more for making the story more entertaining than for "staying alive". As anyone who is familiar with the source material can tell you, many of these stories focused on truly reprehensible people who ultimately get their just comeuppance.

• Players can acquire help from a communal pool of Grave Tokens that can be snatched up and used to lend a hand... but not without a price. After all, one of the main themes of anthology-style horror is that you can never get something for nothing.

• The Grave Keeper has plenty of tools at their disposal as well, including Story Frames that can be used as the foundation for virtually any tale imaginable. Every effort has been made to keep it easy to set up and run games of Stories from the Grave.

• You’ll find details for all the most common Story Frames, including “Careful What You Wish For”, “Consequences”, “Hapless” and more.

• The rulebook contains a full-blown sample installment (aka adventure) to get you started with.

• An exhaustive 8-page “example of play” covering the entirety of an installment will help players and Grave Keepers to better grasp the finer points of the rules.

• Evocative illustrations from C. Michael Hall, Bradley K. McDevitt, Nolan Segrest and art taken directly from “public domain” horror comics of the 1940s and ‘50s.

The website won't let me post a review so I'll post it here:

A fantastic simulation of my favorite genre. Art style is fantastic, language, tone and system are all on point to support (b.i.t.e) sized (not sure why I got censored) and self contained horror stories.

The system is light and easy to learn in a single reading. Cost is low enough that i didn't have a reason not to buy it. Style is horror with camp and humor mixed in. I really liked the casting system in character creation. Makes for both the GM (GK) and the players having hands in character creation. Making NPCs is a snap. Grave Tokens are an awesome way to visually ratchet the tension while having mechanical ways to make the story more dangerous for the player. Your player could lose their life or mind in a single roll (just not in the first act.)

I'm actually designing a horror anthology podcast and was looking for a game system when someone recommended this to me. Looks like I found it.

Thanks...See more

Is this RPG good for 2 or 3 people? Also is it easy for beginners to learn?

It works best for one Grave Keeper and one or two players, though larger groups can be accommodated.

The game system is easy for beginners to learn, but it will help if at least one person (likely the Grace Keeper) has some experience.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
