Medieval Manager

The thrills of medieval bookkeeping! Doesn’t everyone enjoy roleplaying games for the fantasy of managing their own estate? And yet, players DO find themselves in charge of their very own fiefdoms sometimes.

Medieval Manager provides an “any game system” resource for managing a small medieval fief. It includes a simple system for handling political stability and economics, as well as dozens of tables to build and maintain a rural manor, describe a medieval rural population, and over 60 monthly events that can serve as seeds for medieval adventures.

Medieval Manager is based on late 13th- to early 14th- century England, but is compatible with any medieval historical or fantasy roleplaying game. All that is required is two six-sided dice and a medieval or fantasy roleplaying game system.

Purchasing note: Medieval Manager is intended for generic medieval or fantasy role-playing settings. Those who are interested in a detailed historical medieval setting may want to consider MCCLXV:Evesham instead, which includes extensive details on medieval England in the 1260's during the Second Barons' War, as well as the same mechanics included in Medieval Manager.

I am working on the same information to flesh out how nobility should be incorporated into my D&D game. I have been crunching out the details on how a Manor works in order to develop the story for a noble, whether they are a "titled" noble, a "landed" noble, a knight or just someone of noble birth. Just scanning the sample, I can see that this material deals with the same questions I am working out so I'm sure this will be a big help and serve as some inspiration. Thanks.

Just as an example, in my world a Barony is roughly the size of a piece of land you could ride across in a day, 20 miles on a side. If it is "round" then it is about 360 sq miles, and if it is "square" it is about 400 sq miles. A sq mile contains 640 acres. Some of this land is taken by villages, towns, maybe a city or two, forest land, pasture land, "estates" and other things. For game purposes, I estimate 50% of the land is arable (fertile farmland), and I divide this...See more

Glad to hear! I hope it is helpful. I've tried to sort through many of those details-- as best I can. The productivity issue you raise is a tricky one-- you can get fairly different estimates from different sources. Certainly some of the differences have to do with time and place. In Medieval Manager I was forced to make some estimates and split some differences.

Thanks for the response.

I am trying to back into an understanding of how much farming it takes to support a population. In this era, farming was essential to having a kingdom able to defend itself. Without the food to support a large population, you couldn't feed your men-at-arms and you couldn't feed the smiths and animal handlers that supplied the army. In general, your whole economy required you to have a large and productive agricultural industry.

You are correct that yield per acre is a huge variable in the historic texts and in real life because of the impact of weather and other chance events. But I think we can come up with a good guess on a median performance to determine a model for other decisions. The key facts I am hanging my model on are an acre yields 600 pounds of grains, a person needs 2400 pounds of grains in their diet per year and half of the harvest (300 pounds of grains per acre) are required for feed and seed to sew the following year. This assumes a farmer...See more

Hi Ed-
I'd thought about including some of the calculations and assumptions behind some of my figures and tables, but it seemed like a little much for most people. Do me a favor... drop me an email at pastadventuresgames@gmail.com and I can respond to you in a lot more detail. Happy to hash out more details!

Is there a printer friendly version included with the PDF -- i.e., no background and black/white printing?

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
