Never Going Home is a party-focused role-playing game set in horror haunted trenches during the First World War.

Party-Focused: Never Going Home uses the +One System to focus play and growth on what an individual character can do as part of the larger story that follows a group of soldiers called a Unit. Individual characters may depart regularly as they die from injuries or collapse into madness due to forces from beyond the Veil. Characters are quick to create, so players should expect to re-join the story portraying a new member of the Unit. Each character can have their own heroic moments, but the story of the Unit is the focus.

Horror-Haunted: The Veil between worlds has been opened by the slaughter from the war; and the monstrous Whispers of beings wholly alien to humanity can now be heard. Some people have listened to the Whispers enough to gain arcane powers and now struggle to maintain control as their minds and bodies begin to change. Others are too far gone, mutated into barely-recognizable versions of their former selves. War consumes the days and monsters stalk the nights. Not even dreams are
safe. Players manage their characters’ mental and emotional resources with a dwindling hand of cards.

The First World War: The setting is the real Earth and the characters are all humans. A terrible new element has been added to the war, but the true horrors of the real war are part of the story as well. The game is set in the years between when the Veil was torn in 1916 and when the war really ended in 1918. The focus is on the front-line soldiers who are fighting and experiencing the worst of the magic and monsters. There is some mention made of, but little exploration of, the “home fronts” of any of the belligerents and civilians only appear in passing.

Would it be possible to have greyscale or text-only version for me to read it in PDF? It's a bit difficult for me to read with some red and reddish brown colors in background. I did like the concept of WWI going with a mix of occult and horror.

Hey so I'm not the biggest fan of how combat initiative works in the rules as written, how would you all handle that as a DM to make sure that no player was unfairly excluded from combat?

The way I understand and played initiative in my first game, if a player gets the highest initiative card played...the players basically get to pick the order. Initiative starts with player 1 (highest initiative) who acts and then picks player 2 for initiative. This repeats until all players have gone. It is then up to the last player in initiative to pick any groups of NPCs to go. Then the narrator/GM picks the order of the groups.

Players do not necessarily have to pick another player to go next. They could pick an NPC group to go next (friendly or not). But every combat scenario I ran into, us players picked each other to go before any NPCs. Hopefully I made sense and didn't muddy it up further.

Hey Cole and Bob. This is pretty close. The player with the highest card (Player A) picks who goes first. It can be themselves or someone else (PC, NPC, or Adversary) and then once the selected player (Player B) has taken their action then Player B selects who goes next. This is done until all combatants have gone, after which the last player/character who has gone selects who starts the next round.

Out of curiosity, are new prints of the softcover based on the errata'd/updated PDF, or are they still using the original files?

You might want to check with them about that. My PDF says it's the second printing on the copyright page, but the print-on-demand physical copy that just arrived says first printing. I haven't gone through to check each page yet, of course, but that definitely seems off.

I take it that "Dcore2" is the most recent, better revised version?

There seems to be a corrected typo in page 11 or so, and slightly more aggressive background textures, but other than that they seem to be much the same.

The copyright on DTCore2 is 2020, on DTCoreREVISED it’s 2019.

I'm putting my vote in for pdf bookmarks. Looks like the bookmarks are being worked on, but unsure on the release of a new version.

Why are there two files in the download - one of them called revised? If is really revised version the old one should be obsolete? Also naming of the file seems strange - DTCore?

Hey Jacek! Sorry about the confusion. I made the change to the file in the system. The most recent one (for you) is the DTCore2. I have since modified the name of the file as viewable to the purchaser to be NeverGoingHome.

I will add to the chorus related to bookmarks. Please either add them or unlock the permissions so we can do it ourselves. This removes one of the main benefits of using a digital copy.

Disappointed. WHERE ARE THE BOOKMARKS IN THE PDF? if you aren't going to have them, then at least let me be able to add them myself, BUT NO, YOU HAVE THAT LOCKED TOO. I will likely never run the game because of it OR READ IT. IF I COULD I WOULD ASK FOR MY MONEY BACK.

PLEASE FIX.

I was able to work around this limitation by printing the PDF to a new (unsecured) PDF using Microsoft Print to PDF as the "printer". The new copy allowed me to add bookmarks. It's not ideal, but it makes it a lot easier to work with the book until they do something official. Unfortunately you'll have to do it all over again if they release a future revision.

Would it be possible to include a printer friendly version of the PDF? Everything looks great, trying to print any sheets for reference for the table uses up so much ink it isn't funny.

Hey Richard. We'll investigate making some of the GM screen inserts that are available on this site for other games. We'll make sure those are printer friendly if those get worked up. Thanks for the suggestion!

Hey John. They should be available in the UK through this service, barring any limitations to printing based on the lockdown restrictions at the printer. There are no limitations on our end.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
