I am curious as to why the hardcover for this is only available when buying the Classic Gaming Negative Space bundle, this isn't the case for any of the other books in the bundle?

I want the bonus content as well if I am going to buy a hardcopy. I have your other books and didn't know about the kickstarter otherwise I would have backed it.

Rapid-fire linked questions about the printed versions:

. Why no hardcover outside the bundle?
. Why only premium shipping on the bundle? (I want to pay less and wait more; shipping to Italy brings the total to €96,90 and I'm not even sure there's VAT in it, argh!)
. Why no hardcover on amazon?

Thanks

You need to be a lot more clear about what the bonus content is, because there's no way I'm buying an incomplete product unless it is laid out specifically what is not included. Reading your kickstarter and the discussion on here makes it sound like you've omitted about half of the actual content? Not just extra art or something but literally half of the reason why I would even consider buying this book?

Really not liking the idea of buying what amounts to an abridged version of a book. Doesn't matter how potentially insignificant the additional content in the kickstarter version is, or if this was the intended version, knowing that it's not possible to acquire the most complete version of this product completely turned me off from buying it.

Is there any way at all to pay extra for a print version of the Kickstarter edition? I totally missed out on the Kickstarter but it includes several exclusive extra monsters that are not in this edition. It's a total bummer.

So there are monsters missing in this book, as stated in one of the reviews?

Yeah - I guess if you were a kickstarter backer you get a version that has a bunch more monsters in it. I think it's like an extra 20+ pages of content? I was going to buy the all three of the print books but now I'm holding off since the missing monsters from the KS edition is a huge turnoff for me. I feel like a better idea for kickstarter exclusive editions is to maybe make a variant cover, or higher quality physical printing of a book, instead of actually changing the content in the book. :(

It's a real bummer to learn about this product now when it's too late to get the fuller KS edition with more content.

I have to agree:
I bought the previous two books, thoroughly enjoyed them, and recommended them.
Now the final volume has arrived.
I didn’t even know that there was a KS for it.
And where is even the trimmed down print version of it?
The print version is already available when buying alle three volumes at once. But what about customers who already bought the previous two books and just want to purchase the final version in print?

As much as I love the quality of the books: I have to agree that I feel let down.
Where is the print version of volume3?
When will the full version of the book be released?

Mr. Campbell, if you assume that everyone is following Kickstarter: You are mistaken.

The printed version is probably just temporarily unavailable. Maybe because of the paper shortage. It was available a couple of weeks ago when I ordered a copy.

I wouldn’t have, though, if I had realized that "Public Edition" was a careful euphemism for the "Abridged Edition." Because no one would ever buy an abridged version of a third party monster manual.

You ask, "When will the full version be released?" Apparently never. The author has explicitly promised on his Kickstarter page that only backers will ever have access to the complete work with the full 65 monster descriptions. Regular customers will only ever be able to read the abridged work with 28 monster descriptions.

I’m sorry Courtney, but that is semantic sleight of hand. I wouldn’t be so annoyed about this if I wasn’t a such a big fan of your work. But don’t try to sell me a cow-patty and tell me it’s pie.

You can boost your Kickstarter by offering exclusive content if you want, and you can parse it as bonus content to thank your backers if you want. But you knew that that choice was going to depress any sales after that, right?

It’s kind of insulting to those of us that buy ALL of your books at full retail price to read how grateful you are to your special in-crowd that is locked into whatever social media feeds announce Kickstarter campaigns, and that they deserve a better product than us working people that don’t have time to keep track of the 100’s of crowd funded OSR projects going at any one time.

And for that matter, I backed On Downtime and Demesnes, and looking back now it was never even fulfilled. I ended up forgetting that I had backed it, coming across it...See more

I hear you and I want to thank you so much for your comments. It took time to type that out, and it's super beneficial for me to hear it.

It's in response to market pressures. Kickstarter raises the most money (by far) and takes the smallest cut (again by far). I would not be solvent without it. I was simply looking for a way to provide a benefit to the people who make that possible.

It is an awful lot to keep track of and I sympathize. I hope anyone in your position looking for a solution to contact me directly via e-mail at campbell@oook.cz and we will see what we can do.

I just noticed the existence of this book about a week ago, and ordered it immediately because I loved the previous two books in this series, the Megadungeon series, and especially On the Non-player Character.

Now I am kind of pissed to find out this is an abridged version of of the work, and the complete text was only available to people that happened to notice a Kickstarter fifteen months ago. Everyone else doesn’t get access to staples like Gnolls and Ogres.

I probably would have supported this book if I’d known about the Kickstarter, but I wouldn’t get any pleasure in other players not getting access to "exclusive content" because I’m not a narcissist. (I’m not sure why I didn’t get a notification, because I did support the Kickstarter for Downtime and Demesnes).

This experience leaves a very foul taste in my mouth regarding the whole Hack and Slash Publishing line.

John H is correct, particularly in light of RPG authors successfully delivering extra content to anyone who shells out for the product, post-launch. The crowdfunding addicts can still pat themselves on their backs for "making it possible to generate this content for everyone" and get to see exciting updates on some webpage as numbers grow larger.

Kevin Crawford's projects come to mind as an example but I'm sure I've seen it elsewhere too.

The difference being that with Kevin's projects you have the option of paying for the full text like backers did rather than downloading the core text for free. That is not a fair comparison.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
