Chronicles of Darkness

Keep walking.

Eyes straight ahead.

Don’t look back.

In the shadows and between the cracks of our everyday lives hide the Chronicles of Darkness. Here lurk creatures of ancient myth and urban legend. Here lie the graves of angels and the bunkers of secret government programs. Here every malformed horror you’ve ever seen out of the corner of your eye has a home. And they’ve seen you.

Don’t look back!

Chronicles of Darkness RPG rulebook contains:

  • A guide to creating characters to explore a world of modern horror, from hopes and fears to psychic powers.
  • Dramatic rules for investigation, social manipulation, and bone-crunching violence.
  • Over a dozen monsters straight out of weird fiction and urban legend… plus complete rules for creating your own.
  • The God-Machine Chronicle, a massive collection of sample characters and techgnostic adventures.
  • Formerly titled nWoD Core Rulebook 2nd Edition.

Note on the Print Editions: Standard Color uses a thinner paper stock than Premium Color, basically the same paper as the Black & White books. This usually means the colors are less vivid, but it also means the price drops a bit per page in the production process. Examples of pages: Premium Color vs. Standard Color.

Weird, I'm just now realizing that this book (and most post-gmc core books) are missing Enervated and Thrall conditions. Still a good book, just weird thing to exclude.

It looks like the book 'The God-Machine Chronicle' isn't available anymore. I was really looking forward to getting that one. It had sweet cover art. I don't really want, or need, to get the 2nd edition of WoD.
They also got rid of the 'Blood and Smoke- Strix Chronicle' book when they melded it with (or retitled it) 2nd edition Requiem.
Onyx Path has made some really bad publishing decisions here (not nearly as bad as WotC, but still).
Bring back these books that you'd published. They were 'print-on-demand'. There was no good reason to remove them. I'm kicking myself for not getting them when they were available. :(

This book already has the God-Machine Chronicle in it. Also Blood and Smoke is still available, they simply renamed it 2nd edition Requiem.

Okay I ordered this book on the 30th of December in standard print format. I also ordered 3 other Chronicles of Darkness books, I have received all of the other books much faster than I thought I would have but by the 12th of January I still had not received this book and looking at the USPS tracking information it stated: "Label Created, not yet in system." To this day the 26th of January it still reads the same thing when I enter the tracking number. On the 12th of January I was told that the printer could not verify that the order had shipped, Oh and yes I submitted a ticket and spoke to people on numerous occasions about this, I was told that I new order had been sent to the printer and that I would be notified when it shipped. Days went by and nothing, more days went by and nothing and I was asking them about the shipment through all this time, they told me that when the order was shipped that I would receive an updated tracking number in place of the one on the old order, still nothing. It is now...See more

Hey guys! I'm thinking about trying out Chronicles of Darkness and I have a stupid question right at the start...

"Over a dozen monsters straight out of weird fiction and urban legend… plus complete rules for creating your own."
Does that mean you can play monsters as well? Or do all player characters have to be human? I thought the "main rulebook" only offers human characters and that you need the other rulebooks (Vampire, Werwolf etc.) for playing monsters?

You need the source books to player the main line splat of CoD. Same as all previous itterations of the World of Darkness. But, you can actually have fun with only the main rule book. Just use the game play and go nuts! I do it all the time!

I'm sure it's an annoying question but will this book last for playing long term? There isn't a 3rd edition or anything that might come along soon? I just want to play fan splats and Changeling but I'm always being told to get the corebook first.

The first edition was titled "World of Darkness" while the second edition (this one) has the "Chronicles of Darkness" branding. This is the current edition (i.e., 2e). Hope that helps!

No. Mummy the Curse is a 1st edition New World of Darkness game, so it would need to use that book. Apparently there are plans to make a 2nd edition of Mummy, but I don't know when it would be done.

This is small but it has been really bothering me. On page 115 under Media and Inspiration it refers to "The Killing (U.S. or Dutch version)". It says Dutch, where it should say Danish.

It depends on what you are looking for: plain hunters or "Hunter: the Vigil" hunters. You can mix-n-match several books:
[WoD] World of Darkness
[HtV] Hunter: the Vigil
[CofD] Chronicles of Darkness
[MR] Mortal Remains

If you are looking for plain hunters without additional rules/conspiracies, you can use either [WoD] (1st edition rules) or [CofD] (2nd edition rules). This way it's just 1 book, but bear in mind that [CofD] includes a lot more than just The God-Machine Chronicles, and adds a lot of tools that improve storytelling and roleplaying, such as condition cards and tilts. It also adds rules for investigation and clues, social maneuvering, new rules for combat, and a framework for designing investigation chronicles (Called "Missing Persons").

If you are looking for playing [HtV] you can use [WoD]+[HtV] for 1st edition rules), or go with [WoD]+[HtV]+[MR] for 2nd edition rules. You could also try [CofD]+[HtV]+[MR], but maybe that would...See more

I own [HtV], Some of the [HtV] books(Spirit slayers etc.) and Block by Bloody Block. I finally have a group that wants to play. I want to run the game with the most updated ruleset. Should I use [CofD]+[HtV] with my additional [HtV] books? Do I needed [MR]?

Really good book. Unfortunately the god machine stuff itself is all tepid recycled matrix-esque nonsense, but largely it's a very solid system with a big rules improvement over the original. Shame old World of Darkness fans bullied them into changing the name though, Chronicles of Darkness is a lot less evocative and has clearly created a lot of confusion.

Yes to all.

Some, you might want another book. Mortal Remains for Second Sight, or Strix Chronicles for VtR

So if I buy this book, I don't have to purchase "The God Machine Chronicles" anymore? Or is there additional material in the latter?

No, you don't have to purchase "The God-Machine Chronicles", it's included in this book. I believe that the only change is regarding the included fiction, but that is published in "The God-Machine Chronicles Antology" book.

No, this isn’t necessary. Any of the side game lines (mage, werewolf, Changeling, vampire, etc.) will have anything the gmc rules update might be missing. You’re good.

I don't understand which world of darkness core book I'm supposed to use with vampire and werewolf 20th anniversary? this one (chronicles of darkness) or a world of darkness 2nd ed (which i believe was made many years before the 20th anniv books)?

Really this is the biggest marketing problem I think they made with this version. They really should have gone the dnd route and labelled them all as expressly version 2 or whatever. Also its weird that its not on amazon.

The 20th Anniversary books use the old rule system (oWoD or cWoD). It's a different system and different setting. For those games you won't need this book.

I haven't played Vampire 20 or Werewolf 20, but as far as I know all the base rules are included in their own books, and there is no "base rules book".

For V20 or W20 or M20 you just use those as is, they have all the rules in them, and they use the older Storyteller system, and they are set in the original "Old" World of Darkness setting which officially ended in an apocalypse (there was a chronicle for it, published in a book, that mixed W, M, and V and a few other OWoD games in it). IF you're new to WoD / Storyteller I suggest just getting V20 and run some of the older stories they republished for it, that was the true Golden Age of White Wolf / Storyteller, IMHO.

20th Anny isn't the old-good White Wolf's Storyteller system, also known as (Old) World of Darkness? WoD 2nd Ed I suppose is the "nWoD" which is now just "Chronicles of Darkness" by Onyx Path, but the point is that actually, none of them, they are standalone, we used to play the old games together and then they published some side-book called World of Darkness, before everything collapsed into chaos, so yeah, in case that you wanted to play them together, you don't need more books really, forget the World of Darkness book, that's Storytelling system (VtR, XXX and so on), really nothing to do with the White Wolf's Storyteller system anymore

Recently purchased a hardback copy of this. I've enjoyed flipping through it, and I think the Horror creation section is a great addition, something missing from the game series that the Antagonist book certainly could've used (while the creatures presented in that book, like the Aswang or Beast of Bethlehem, are great, a helpful guide to create your own monster is a great way to keep things interesting!). I have a slew of World of Darkness books I've amassed over the time. I'm wondering: just how many of the stats and numbers from these books match up well with the new Chronicles? I know each of the splats (Vampire, Werewolf, Changeling, etc) is getting a revision, can we expect the same for the "blue books"? I'm sure Second Sight's clunky collection of psychic abilities has been replaced by the Supernatural Merits offered in CoD, but what about books like Changing Breeds? Will the slew of werecreatures presented in those pages get an update? Is one even required? Can Changing Breed Merits, Aspects,...See more

Dan is the Man!

It's most helpful to know that VtR 2e has a setting in San Francisco, MtAw 2e has one in L.A. and PtC 2e has one in Sacramento, seeing as I'm writing a Californian hunters' campaign based in Oakland.

Biggest thanx!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
