FrontierSpace Player's Handbook

Among the stars in a distant galaxy there exists a region of densely populated habitable worlds. It is here your story begins, a place commonly called "the frontier" where people dwell and tales unfold.

The Galactic Federation's power now wanes as corporations rise to fill the void left behind by the loss of their protection and authority. Citizens push on against adversity and defy the obviousness of their limitations. They live their lives doing work for the large interstellar corporations and governments. They huddle around spaceports and seek passage to the next system. They fight and they love and they die... but above all else, despite the vastness, despite the isolation, despite the dirt and the dust and the danger... the frontier is alive. And that's what makes it worth fighting for.

The Player's Handbook is the essential sourcebook for every FrontierSpace role player. Contained in this book you'll find all the rules you need for creating, training, equipping, playing, and developing your character. This is a companion volume to the Referee's Handbook, available here.

FrontierSpace is built upon the foundation of the d00lite system, the same game engine used to power BareBones Fantasy and Covert Ops roleplaying games. Years of feedback and continued game system development has evolved this product into something that flows at the game table while getting out of the way of a good story.

Two questions for Bill (the publisher):

a) Is this (game/publisher) still a going concern? (Or has the WoTC D&D plans left all the older games like this in abeyance?)

b) Is this product (and product line) impacted by the possible nullification of WoTC OGL 1.0a? Is it in any way tied to that document? (And if not, how is it licensed or is it?)

Not sure if it's still actively developed or not but Frontier Space was released under a Creative Commons license (at least it's text) and I think it would not have been affected by WOTC's OGL changes that they have now abandoned - that wasn't how FS was licensed - declaration on licensing from DwD Studios FS website -

I have a question concerning the Military Walker. Does the amount of BP it has due to some omitted armor not listed in the configuration? It seems unreasonably high otherwise...

Any plan to add the errata table to the book, even as an appendix? Would be nice to have that there, if I decide to splurge for the PoD.

YES!
I am working on a new render of the books, applying some edits that got past the editor, and changing some things in the writing style. Added the missing table. Hopefully I'll have it all uploaded mid-August.

Contemplating picking up the POD version, did the new render get uploaded yet? If not but it's very close then I'll hold off but I'm keen to order this :)

Will the POD also be updated when the PDF gets updated? I would like to pick it up, but I would rather wait for the errata and index to be incorporated into the POD.
Thanks!

How do these rules compare to the 1982 SF RPG?

Well... they don't, really. It gives a spiritual nod to that old game, but this is not it, nor is it a clone. It's a new game. But, it's based on percents... so in that way it's similar. And it has very few broad-scoped skills, so in that way it's similar. The types of equipment may seem familiar (gyrojet, sonic, electric, beam weapons, etc). The setting might on its surface feel heavily influenced too. But it's not a retroclone. It's not just the SF game with its serial numbers filed off. It's a new game!

Did you mean it has few skills and that those few skills have a broad scope?
or
Did you mean that it has 'few broad-scoped skills' which suggests it has other (perhaps a lot of) non-broad-scoped skills?

I think the first is what you mean, but the preview doesn't even give me enough to confirm that.

This game looks really cool, but is it still being supported? Will more material be published? Supplements? Adventures? The DwD website was not even updated to announce/promote the release of the Player's Handbook in September 2017 or the Referee's Guide afterwards, the Twitter account is dormant, and the last time they replied here on DTRPG was march M018. It's like they shipped it and forgot about it. I'm so surprised considering the diligence that went into publishing the Starftontiersman magazine for years, yet when they ship their own game after years of work, they completely forgot to promote and market it. As a Star Frontiers fan, I'm SUPER interested in FrontierSpace, but if I'm gonna end up playing a non-supported game, I might as well stick with Star Frontiers. I would be very happy to be wrong here.

Thanks for your interest! We fully intend to continue to support this and all the other DwD Studios products. We just lost a key member of our team and I've been distracted by life events of late, but have full intentions of getting right back into the full-on game mode I've been in for the past decade as soon as some family issues have been overcome. Additionally, our team is finally growing again, meaning more minds working on more product. Expect more from this and also from BareBones Fantasy, Covert Ops, and more!

Thanks for the reply Bill, sorry to hear about your team member, and I hope life sorts itself out for you to come back to more FrontierSpace content soon enough. Can I recommend that you at least make sure the DwD front page & blog advertise the game? The last FS activity dates back to early 2017 there. Same for your Twitter account. In any case, I put my money where my mouth is and your word is enough for me: I just ordered the FrontierSpace PHB and RG in hardcovers, and I also bought the Dark Side of Loridian and Harvest Moon adventure PDFs. I downloaded the PDFs and I'll start diving in. It looks great so far! Thanks, and good luck with everything!

Hello,
don't know if it's just my book, but on page 188 the text mentions a Starship Upgrade Cost Table, except there is no table at all... it goes on with upgrades effect description, but there is no Table with Upgrade Costs or Limit.
Thanks in advance

Yep! The vehicle and starship prices are listed in the equipment tables on page 58. I didn't repeat them in the stat blocks, but that maybe would have been thorough.

hello, i have a silly question is this a generic system for retro like scifi genre (à la TSR's Star Frontier) wich we can create our own setting or does it comes with its own universe (still à la Star Frontier) ?

It has an example setting in the book, but you can certainly make up your own setting and ignore the example setting in the book. The Referee's Manual gives you tools to make up your own aliens, add psionics and more.

I'm not fond of 'em either and usually remember to change the default setting... I'll see if it'll let me change it... stand by.

Edit: it let me remove it. It was just an oversight on my part. The product still is listed as a "watermarked pdf" but when you download it it has no watermark.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
