Pilgrims of Rao is a multiplayer tabletop roleplaying game for 2-9 players, featuring an original rules system and tools to build a randomized game world that provides a unique experience every time it is played.  In the world of Pilgrims of Rao, humanity teeters on the brink of extinction after a failed attempt to usurp the gods millennia ago left only scattered pockets of survivors around the world.  Humanity rebuilt from the wreckage, but once again they are faced with mortal peril.  Players take on the role of humans amidst the crisis, create and customize their characters, and set off on an epic quest to rediscover the legendary fallen human capital of Rao.  Players explore the world, encounter devious traps and wicked monsters, and uncover the secrets left behind by those who dared to face the gods.

Pilgrims of Rao is a fantasy roleplaying game where the players are the architect of their story. The only limit is their imagination. The game is like a collaborative storytelling experience supported by a set of rules. This full-color illustrated guidebook contains the rules and the structure you need to play the game.

This guide includes the basics of how to play, advanced gameplay (encounter types, terminology, etc), character creation with a character sheet template, a wealth of randomly generated items, and expanded play (optional rules for your gaming experience).

This RPG features gaming with no Game Master. The world, enemies in encounters, non-player characters, and treasure you find are all randomly generated using the rules in this guidebook.

This game includes three encounter types. These are: combat, communication, and exploration. Encounters are the trials that your character must overcome to progress in the game. You will fight monsters, debate in the halls of government, and explore forgotten ruins. Beat everything the world throws at you to gain experience and loot, climbing ever higher toward your ultimate victory.

Most actions are resolved by rolling dice. You will need four (d4), six (d6), and eight-sided dice (d8) to play this game. Three of each is preferable. Roll are divided into Performance and Effect Rolls. A performance roll uses d8 with the goal of rolling 5+ to succeed. An effect roll uses d4-d8, depending on the action and modifiers, with the goal of rolling equal to or greater than the target number (DC: Difficulty Class). Determine the results of an action by rolling the appropriate dice and adding all modifiers. If two characters make the same type of roll against each other, this is called a competing roll and the highest number (after modifiers) wins.

After a character completes his adventure or falls in battle, he retires. He can then use the feats he accomplished in his adventure to pass on his legacy to a new character. Thematically this could be a father passing on his sword and titles to his son, a young woman finding the magical staff of a long dead hero while exploring a cave, or anything else that might kickstart a new adventure. This guidebook provides mechanical support for this type of role playing.

Character customization offers four races, nine classes, six homelands, four lifestyles, and seven vocations for crafting items. It also offers seven main attributes, fourteen skills, a variety of talents (other games may call these feats), and dozens of special powers. Characters grow in level, become more powerful and learn new abilities by earning experience points. They earn these points by completing quests and encounters.

Game sessions vary in length depending on the number of players and how you like to play. 30-90 minutes is a good length for an introductory session, especially if some players are new to roleplaying games. Session length is only limited by the players. The game can be played in one-shot adventures or weekly continuous campaigns.

Happy gaming!

Also, are there plans to upload some sample enemies and bank items (map sites, rooms) to Drivethrurpg? I just finished the book and their absence is noticeable, the book feels like a skeleton rather than a complete body.

It's a bit rough around the edges when it comes to the PDF's quality (some lines and paragraphs are a bit cropped or distorted), but so far, I am loving the book! However, I have noticed that it doesn't let you continue where you left off; you know, how in other PDFs, if you have the right settings using Adobe Reader, the document opens in the last page you were reading? With this one, it's pretty strange, because it always takes you back to the beginning of the PDF. Could you please fix that? Considering it's not a short document, it would really facilitate reading it.

Hi Matt, I don't remember all of them, but here are some of the pages: 19, 21, 23, 29... It seems to be an issue related to the zoom in and zoom out feature while using Adobe Acrobat Reader; the crop or distortion effect happens when you zoom in or out, it doesn't happen very often, but it's slightly annoying. It's strange because this is the only PDF in my collection that does that.

Now about the available adventure, enemies, dungeon rooms, etc. Thanks, but it would be much better if they were available here in Drivethrurpg. Some google drive links go down eventually, while others may contain harmful viruses; if they were made available here, your customers would have an assurance that those assets would always be available for download no matter what, and safe to obtain as well. I also think it's appropriate that they are made available in Drivethrurpg, because the book does not contain a clear example on how to create those assets, you pretty much have to create them from scratch with no guidelines...See more

Abraham,
That is odd. That might be an issue with converting between multiple formats that causes problems in certain readers. The original files were .docx documents created in Microsoft Word, converted, I believe, into InDesign files by our editor before it was turned into the final composite PDF. Word has a habit of cutting off footers, especially page numbers, when converting to a PDF, which is why we used intermediary software.

I agree with you. The sample documents in the Drive are not sufficient or ideal for setting up your home games. Their absence in the book is mainly due to an issue with scope in the original Kickstarter. The book grew much larger over development than was planned, and we had to cut something to make sure we did not have runaway printing costs. That would not have been a problem if we had developed a wholly digital product without sunk costs.

I would like to bring those assets to DTRPG sometime in the future. We are currently in the midst of other...See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
