Newtonium Engine Core Rulebook

Explore a parallel 1754 with superpowers, magic, clockwork robots and demons.

Until a decade ago, magic was so rare and weak that many enlightened thinkers did not believe it existed. That was until the revelation of the magical alloy, Newtonium. Discovered by clockmaker John Harrison, the metal is used to make powerful and intricate clockwork machines that harness its power.

The greatest amongst Harrison's creations are the Newtonium Motors: four clockwork devices that graft onto human organs, allowing them to channel magical energies. They enhance mind and body, giving the Augmented control over one of the classical elements, and empowering their magical rituals. However, this power comes at a cost, twisting the subject's personality to feed the desires of their element.

Take on the role of one of these Augmented heroes and enter a world of intrigue, politics and military ambitions; fighting against dark magics and clockwork technologies that threaten to tear apart a world teetering on the brink of a global war.

Written by Ben Redmond, co-creator of ENnie nominated Etherscope.

Game Mechanics Summary

At its core Newtonium Engine has a unique, flavourful dice mechanic. The roll produces different trigger effects that allow for varied player options and encourages narrative style play in general play. Yet it has a crunchy combat system, where the same triggers from the dice rolls allow for different tactical options.

Character creation is a simple priority system similar to Shadowrun that allows for pretty quick character builds yet with a decent amount of variety and options.

The system that my playtesters often said was the best part of the system was the way elemental powers work, as a dynamic flexible system that allows you to build a wide range of effects on the fly.

There are a few design blogs on my website, so you can read more there. There's also the Quickstart to get a flavour of the game rules for free.

It is highly recommended that you also download the free interactive charactersheet when you purchase Newtonium Engine.

Okay, I really love the concept of this game and think the mechanics are, for the most part, super neat, to the point I bought the pdf AND the physical copy. But something that is seemingly never properly discussed in the book is what the heck the damage profile of an attack *means.* It just tells you that like, the musket has a 6/3 damage profile with no explanation of what that means that I could find, and in a book for a game as mechanically dense as this, that is a problem.

Cribbage is my absolute most favorite game in the world. My family has used it to learn to count and add for four generations. I LOVE this game mechanic. And I love this game. I'll be doing a video review of this soon.

My one complaint is that the PDF doesn't have bookmarks. The ToC and Index are rather good, but bookmarks on a pdf are pretty important.

Oh no. Something must've gone wrong with the export from indesign then as the contents page should automatically generate the bookmarks. I'll look into it and upload a new version over the next couple of days if I can fix it.

This game is doing some interesting stuff with the Four Humours/Temperaments that isn't mentioned at all in the above blurb, so if you are interested, check out the designer's blog post on the topic:

Thanks for pointing people in that direction. It's tricky to know which of the different aspects of the game are going to appeal. There's also a blog post on the cribbage dice mechanic used in the game on my website, too (https://www.blackorifice.uk/450528_design-blog-cribbage-dice) for anyone who enjoys quirky dice mechanics.

You're welcome!

I always want to know what makes a particular RPG distinctive from others in the same genre.

Also more pertinently, I feel like RPGs could benefit more from leveraging various forms of personality types for informing roleplaying.

On a separate note, it was disappointing not to see any mention of the Ashanti Empire in the Gazetteer as it was a going concern during the period covered by the Newtonium Engine:

I'm sorry I missed them, they sound interesting. I'm not an historian so will almost certainly have missed several nations/empires. I will definitely add a section on them if I get around to revising it at some point.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
