Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay First Edition Core Rulebook

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Fully OCR'd, bookmarked and cleaned up to look amazing, the first edition of the seminal Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay comes to PDF!

We’ve painstakingly scanned every page, and created a PDF that maintains the appearance of the original. This does make for a slightly larger file than we’d normally produce, but on this occasion, we think it’s worth it for all the great First Edition feel! The PDF is also extensively bookmarked for ease of reference.

We released a version earlier in the year via Humble Bundle that did not have the colour plates of the Games Workshop edition, but this new PDF does have all those glorious colour plates we know so well.

POD, please! I’ve got an original hardcover copy that I bought decades ago, but I have a long list of friends who’d buy a POD reprint in a heartbeat.

It would pretty much be an automatic purchase if that happens.

This is a jewel of the old school. Please, make it available as a print on demand - hardback copies.

This is the book that started it all for me. While everyone else was doing Traveler, Spell Jammer, or D&D, I was reading and studying this book. It was hard for me to get the whole game system, but the few books I had made for hours of entertainment for us. We loved the Doom Stones Campaign as well as Empire in Flames, but all the crazy adventures I came up with allowed me to flourish as a writer, artist, comedian, and story teller. I love the system and the painless combat process that kept the story moving, this system made death gritty and other times horrific. Oh the memories of happier times..

The content is great, it's Warhammer after all. But there are parts in the scan where the text is barely legible. Not sure if C7 or anyone, could have done it any better, but regardless, it's a bit of a disappointment. The majority of the scan is absolutely fine, but it definitely has a few rough spots here and there.

I have wanted to read this book, for almost 30 years. (I've known a few people who played/had copies. But, not many stores in my area ever carried it. And, when it was discontinued, it became expensive and rare.) I truly feel that ive missed out on something unique, with this game. It still breaks my heart.
This file is very large and difficult to download. The listing states that it is for a PDF format file. But, whenever I use the DL link, the file I get is an HTML file, that links to a PDF file that I cannot download. (Or, which is corrupted, if I CAN get it to dl.)
Is this supposed to work this way? What am I doing wrong?

My British friend at the time we played D&D (mid-80's) introduced us to a RPG from the UK. I'm sure it was Warhammer. Did this game edition come with an adventure called "Ziggurat of Doom"? I remember the rulebook as only being black and white.

Ziggurat of Doom was a sample battle scenario setup in the first Warhammer Fantasy tabletop wargame with 5 dwarves making a last stand against some goblins hunting them.

So first edition of Warhammer Fantasy Battles (WFB), the forerunner of Age of Sigmar, and not the RPG game?

The first edition was a little confused as to whether it was an RPG or a miniatures war-game in that it was sold as an RPG but it really wasn't. With the subsequent release of Forces of Fantasy - army lists for the game - it quickly solidified into a miniatures war-game. This leaves it, I think, in an odd way, as the first version of both the RPG and miniatures game.

What does OCR mean?
I think that, if the .pdf file size is 80 MB or more, it runs really slowly in my Samsung Galaxy Tab A tablet, and the pages take several seconds to resolve when you turn them. It may be even worse on older tablets.
A .pdf of Shadowrun, with 500 pages and color plates, got by with 50 MB.

OCR stands for Optical Character Recognition.
The file is a scan of the book and OCR software was used to that text can be selected and copied into a word document.

GeoCentric D is correct, however he fails to mention the main benefit to GMs: the ability to search text in the document. With OCR PDFs, you seldom need to consult the index to find a rule - just use your PDF reader's "find text" feature and you can be at the relevant place very quickly.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
