Shadows over Vathak: Player's Guide to Vathak

A Stricken World

Shadows over Vathak blends the Otherworldly, Cosmic Horror themes of New England's Lovecraft, the Macabre Mysteries of Poe, and the sensibilities of Victorian, Gothic Horror Adventure into an original fantasy setting for the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game.

As players, your characters fight to survive in a land threatened with destruction by the rise of the ancient and evil Old Ones and their spawn.
Your characters may represent points of light in the darkness or give in to dark temptations.
Most will fall somewhere in between — survivors struggling to eke out another day.
Though the followers of the One True God speak of divine providence while battling the Old Ones, the sins of the Church often rival those of their enemies.
In the world of Vathak, your character’s perceptions of heroes and villains is a thin line drawn by their own personal morality and, of course, determined by the victor.
Included in the Shadows over Vathak: Player's Guide you will find:
  • A thorough introduction to the world of Vathak, a land and people struggling against ancient evils.
  • Suggestions and setting-specific mechanics to help you create and play characters in a horror game.
  • Rules and options for the 9 playable races of Vathak, from the tribal bhriota, to twisted cambions, ghostly hauntlings, and much more!
  • Complete write-ups for 4 new classes of Vathak, with at least 2 archetypes for each of the 36 core and base classes, including the occult classes.
  • Detailed rules for crafting firearms and 50 feats to help you make your characters unique and suited for the horrors of Vathak.
  • A rich selection of weapons and armor, new and old, with options for tools, alchemy, vehicles, and other gear needed to survive Vathak.
  • An entire chapter expanding on both early and advanced firearms for the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game, the only thing keeping the horrors at bay!
  • A rich discussion of each of the major religions of Vathak, from the Church of the One True God, to the romni Court of Signs, and the cults and secret societies of the Old Ones!
  • Topped off with a discussion of magic in Vathak, with new options for divine casters, and a vast set of spells perfect for Vathak.

Unfortunately there is no preview (just a single blank page saying "Sample") and while it says it can be for D&D, without the sample, I cannot consider for purchase. Seeing as the last convo from this was 2021, and the last update was 2016, I suspect it's really just for pathfinder, correct? (highly doubt I will get a response, but figured I'd take a chance)

We have no idea why the preview doesn't work, I assume it has to do with the size. We did contact customer support about it a long time ago, but we never got a real answer on how to fix it. It is for PF, but there is a ton of setting content that could be used for any system (that is based solely on what customers have said). The free Explorer's Guide might give you more of an idea of what to expect ( https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/198365/Shadows-over-Vathak-Explorers-Guide-to-Vathak).

Hey there... Love Vathak! I have the campaign setting and the players guide.

Any thoughts on a Shadows of the Demon Lord or Zweihander version? Or releasing a Systemless setting guide with conversion notes for multiple systems?

Feeling that the setting would click better without Pathfinder. And that is commentary on Pathfinder, not your most excellent setting. Zweihander needs a setting!

Either way, thank for creating a great setting/product.

It may be that I have an older version of the PDF, or just one with some mistakes but I noticed that for dhampirs, in the aging tables, they had the exact same figures as used for humans, EXCEPT for the adulthood table. However, the fluff text indicates that dhampir live much longer than ordinary humans such as the vindari or bhirota so it got me wondering, what are the actual middle-aged, old, and venerable figures for dhampirs?

Because they surely can't be 35 years, 53 years, & 70 years, with a max age of 70 + 2d20, right? Because that's exactly the same as normal humans. And dhampirs are supposed to age more slowly compared to humans.

Hi Warren, Lucus here -- one of the writer/designers.

Looking things over, I think is one of those issues where we initially copied over Paizo's original designs in the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game (example link to the Archive's legacy version of the Advanced Races Guide's Age, Height, & Weight breakdown: http://legacy.aonprd.com/advancedRaceGuide/ageHeightWeight.html )

From page 66, I would use this text as a reference:

Dhampir live well beyond the lifespan of
mortals, but they are rare. There are perhaps a few
handfuls in existence at any one time and those
that will not ally with the powers of darkness are
usually hunted down and slain. Dhampir do not
physically age as mortals do. They reach
adulthood, and then age slowly.

Meaning then that the first table is correct for "Starting Age" on page 49, but then use either the svirfneblin ages on the second chart (i.e. 100|150|200|200+3d100) OR you could talk to your...See more

In-house, we always figured the size of Vathak is roughly "North America" sized. I will have to get the Project Manager or Lead Developer to stop by and make sure. I believe this information will show up in the Gamemaster's Guide to Vathak.

The map is 43mb? Oof! I get that it's large, but wow! Also, the 2nd page of the map is blank, right? Did mine not work correctly?

It is large, and print quality for those who want to print it themselves. The blank page was for our printer proof and wasn't pulled. You can also buy a print map here: http://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/104861/Shadows-over-Vathak-World-Map

I was fortunate enough to snag this while it was $5, but all I get is black pages. The only thing that shows up on the black pages is the letters in red (headers) and the artwork (and my watermark). I used the cursor to highlight a section of text, to see what was there, but even the highlighted section showed now text. Anyone else get the pdf? just it just take longer to load than most?

You might want to let it sit and load, as it is a big file. That said, what pdf reader are you using? We have no reports of any issues with the files.

Microsoft Edge, the PDF viewer app in windows 10, Foxit, and Corel PDF fusion all had issues, but I installed Acrobat reader and it is handling the file just fine.

I would like to buy Vathak book items in hardcopy, preferably hardcover. There is usually combined PDF & print discount or a buy PDF then get it credited to buying the print version. I'm probably asking the same question, but it will probably hold me off from purchasing until print version is available. If there is no discount (just me) I typically will not buy either.

Sorry, you guys definitely do the discounts, and I will probably pick all the one shot PDFs which may not have print options. I think the item of discount when print if only PDF available first is open one. Otherwise will happily wait on the options for this item. Thanks.

I have a couple questions. Will there be a print + pdf option when the hardcover comes out? If yes, can I purchase the pdf now and then be refunded the cost after ordering the print + pdf? One more, ETA on hardcover?

The first question you'll have to direct to OBS, I'm not sure how that works. We are still working on getting the print files right, we had a few issues with file size and a font glyph- but should have those now fixed. There will be a softcover and hardcover available, and we hope to have it up in shy of 2 weeks.

Hey John, I am Project Manager at Fat Goblin Games. Rick will respond shortly as well but YES -- that print version wont be available though for a few weeks as we need to submit it, get a proof, etc.
Additionally, the print copy will feature a different cover! (more on that later, again, when Rick replies!)

It will be about 3 weeks. I want to give it one more pass on review/editing and make sure we didn't miss anything. It also has a different cover for print version - plus a bit a time for print review and set up. I expect mid-november.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
