Revere: Revolution in Silver
por Flames R. [Featured Reviewer]

Revere: Revolution in Silver Mash-ups are all the rage; whether it be Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter, or any number of lesser-known works, putting two seemingly unlikely things together has become a literary obsession recently. Revere: Revolution in Silver carries on this growing tradition, positing that, in his spare time, Paul Revere was actually a werewolf hunter and member of an occult organization dedicated to defending the world against supernatural threats. With the early days of the American Revolution as the backdrop, Revere: Revolution in Silver takes this premise and runs with it. Doing an interesting bit of world-building, writer Lavallee and artist Bond create a whole new mythology around the famous American revolutionary. The art style is reminiscent of the Hellboy comics from Dark Horse: spare and cartoonish, and occasionally appearing a bit rough. I find the style perfectly serviceable for the medium, and have no quarrel with it. I like the subtle, effective sh...

Eclipse Phase: After the Fall First off; this is quality sci-fi writing served up in easily read chunks. It's a great read anytime, but I found it fit quite nicely into a morning commute. It's a great look into the world of Eclipse Phase; and provides some view points that have been missing from the rule books. It's also a nice bit of kit to have in your GM tool box, as it provides succinct explenations for for some of the more difficult to grasp elements of the setting. Such as the mesh, and ego & morph. All right at the front of the book. Fully recommend picking it up, and lending it to your new players....

Hunter Sheets Issue 1 - SLA Industries
por Flames R. [Featured Reviewer]
Publisher: Nightfall Games
Fecha en que fue añadido: 02/04/16 20:07:47
Hunter Sheets Issue 1 - SLA Industries SLA Industries is somewhat different. It posits, in the typically dour, rain-swept and pessimistic style it has achieved, a contest between the players and the monsters – er, a series of psychopathic serial killers – which may or may not be equal or fair in nature. The conceit is that the players take the role of quasi-official operatives who may accept contracts to eliminate undesirable presences on the mean city streets, returning if successful with evidence of the kill (ears, perhaps, in the Mongolian style or some other previously agreed token). There are twenty such ‘Hunter Sheets’ provided in this supplement, which runs to a length of 77 pages in a PDF item. As well as initial and concluding fluff – sorry, intensely-wrought and crafted flavour pieces (there is a reason why publishers are so reluctant to pay for fluff) – the twenty serial killers are presented one at a time, first with information for players and then the same for the GM. The first would be presented to the pl...

Uncharted Worlds

Uncharted Worlds I just received the hardback cover after having kickstarted this project, and I am extremely pleased at the size and weight of the book. This isn't some tome you have to heft around in a backpack. It's lightweight and bound beautifully. Now down to the content. The core of this game is the Apocalypse engine, so if you don't like having fun, go watch paint dry elsewhere. Those new to the PbtA engine, relax! In the very beginning of the book/PDF, Sean Gomes explains the system so you don't have to worry about buying a core edition player's handbook for another $50. Skill tests become Face Adversity, Assessments, and Get Involved, where the Game Master determines the level of difficulty for the players. Want a set of new people to break into tabletop? Have them roll during combat and critical plot moments. Want them to fear you as they should? Make them roll more often. Having a GM that can weave the game's narrative in such a way as to give the players these opportunities is key; if y...

Gilded Cage

Gilded Cage Gilded Cage, a sourcebook for Vampire: The Masquerade, takes a look at the opportunity for players to control their ability to use politics and influence. The book is a fairly easy read at 111 pages and its layout is pretty easy to follow. Focusing on one’s personal influence, Gilded Cage exhibits how anyone can become influential, whether you are in janitorial services or the leader of a multibillion-dollar corporation. Not only can you learn to become more influential, but the book also covers some strategy behind climbing the social ladder. What player doesn’t want to become the highest on the social food chain in their local game? Learn how to pull all the strings needed to rules the streets or the business world; it’s your choice. The key to using Gilded Cage isn’t the exact words on the pages, but instead how one uses the information given to enhance the story they have created. My favorite aspect of role-playing is the opportunity to take any story or concept and make it your...

Carnival of Lost Souls
por Flames R. [Featured Reviewer]
Publisher: Monolith Graphics
Fecha en que fue añadido: 02/04/16 19:56:39
Carnival of Lost Souls Harlequin’s Lament is a gorgeous gothic song, a blend of repetitious chords with a rich-sounding overlay of a grand piano and harmonized vocals in the background. This piece, while not necessarily “circus-like,” shows off the musicianship of Nox Arcana. Next, strategically placed after the melody, is Calliope; children’s laughter echoes in the background of this brooding, circular tune. Madame Endora follows you around and predicts your future, leading you into the Hall of Mirrors. Even though you run away, you may find yourself Lost in the Darkness. One of the difficulties with creating a set in a “Circus Diabolique” is that, if not done properly, a haunted carnival can sound campy or lack general appeal. That is definitely not the case here. Of all the Nox Arcana collections, there is a wide variety of music offered on this set, some of which echoes their other work. For example, fans of the Necronomicon collection might find Nightmare Parade and Circus Diabolique appealing. Other...

Roads of Apocalypse (4th ed.) - Set 1: Church of Apocalypse Scum Crusade I have just reviewed the demo-set and the author publishes the full set. :-D Obviously my opinion does not change. Instead my admiration can only increase. 28 great complete ( a paper miniature isn't complete if it has not back art imho ) paper minis in 4 colors ( 104 figures in total ) for just one buck. The eight new figures added ( 4 preachers and 4standard bearers ) are even more beautiful. If only that it was possible.

Roads of Apocalypse (4th ed.) - Demo-set 1: Church of Apocalypse scums 18 gorgeous paper minis. In a new drawing style, which is very reminiscent of an old drawing school. Dark colors, a dirty drawing ( which, however, is intentionally searched and perfectly found ). A minimalist style set that hits perfectly and doesn't allow to take your eyes off, imho. Perfect! Figures represent mutated zealots/peasants and/or chaos lesser warriors very useful for many different settings, from the post-apocalyptic sci-fi up to dark fantasy. This is a PWYW product but definitely it deserves a few bucks for sure. For its overall high quality....

Enchanted Armory: Orbs of Oblivion (for 5e) There is a good variety of Orbs here. I like that they range from minimal additions to highly effective, given the situation. I like the tie in of the Infinity items, a common theme the writer uses in his other products. My favorite Orb is the Necro Orb, which would be a fun item to throw to any player that is running a dark or evil PC. Overall, well done.

Enchanted Armory: Spectacular Shields (for 5e) > There are a good variety of shields and abilities they possess. I appreciate that not all of them have the standard +2 bonus, as their abilities stand in place of it. In most cases, they can be more fun or better than the AC boost. There are also some shields that allow the DM to have fun at the players expense, while still being beneficial to the player. Overall, I really like this product, and will definitely throw some of these items at my players to see how they like them.

Khyber's Harvest (4e) This is a decent starting 4e adventure. However, it assumes you are already familiar with the Eberron setting, the dungeon has only a single pathway, and one of the rooms seems to have typos in it. But my table had fun, so I can't say it's bad. Worth the free price, anyway.

Kineticists of Porphyra

Fecha en que fue añadido: 02/04/16 09:50:32
Kineticists of Porphyra I'm a big fan of Kineticists (i've got some problems, but i can overlook them for the most part). However, one of my key issues with the class was that I wanted more elements. Occult Origins helped out a bit, but I still wanted more to work with. Additionally, there wasn't a huge selection of feats to pick from either. There were maybe 2-3 feats in the Occult book about this. That's where Kineticistis of Porphyra steps in. It introduces 3 new elements (time, sound, light), while also increasing the abilities of the ones from the Paizo. There's plenty of support for mixing both too! For example within composite blasts, you have Crystal Blast, which mixes earth and light. Or you can pick something like Alteration Amplification which would turn any regular blast from a bunch of d6's to d8's. There's plenty of new infusions to support the blasts as well. Beacon Infusion works for almost all light focused blasts, and lights your enemy up like a beacon, granting allies a bonus to hit...

Traveller Core Rulebook

Traveller Core Rulebook An improvement in evert way from MGT1. Mechanics are completely cleaned up, the book layout and art brings in into the 21st century, and previously the "boring & long" space combat has been updated significantly. I'd like to point out the sole item that people seem concerned about, starship construction rules being moved to the upcoming High Guard book (within a month or two), makes perfect sense and I view it as a positive change. I had never previously created a ship with just the core 1st edition traveller, due to ammendments and changes published in High Guard. In 2nd edition, they avoid this mistake by ensuring a full set of complete and verified construction rules in the book dedicated to such, rather than splitting them over two books. For a more complete review, please see: http://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/16/16668.phtml This product is absolutely worth your time and money....
