Tome of the Mysteries

Verlag: White Wolf

Tome of the Mysteries The opening fiction is a tale of a youngster growing up in a house where one parent is Awakened and the other is not, and worse, finds it difficult to accept. Sad truths... perhaps some one of your mages might have to face, or have as part of their background. The Introduction explains the underlying concept of this book: magic as Art: a craft that must be studied, learned, honed, thought about and practiced... not mechanical cause and effect. Indeed magic often seems to have a will of its own. Presenting a scheme to classify magic in terms of the elements, it's at pains to point out that the classifications are more philosophical than anything else. Each element has associations with emotions and capabilities, and it is these that are reflected by the magic grouped together under it. In summary, will comes under fire, for intellect air is the proper element, with water for feelings and emotions and earth for the manifestation of ideas. Not everyone thinks this way, of course. Some ...

The Gamemaster's Worldbuilding Journal **Disclaimer:** I received a free digital copy of this product for the purpose of this review. I did not receive any of the physical versions. All right, let's dive right into this, shall we? This product is Fat Goblin Games' worldbuilding set, most valuable for Game Masters and anyone else who wants to create their own place for adventures. As a secondary function, it's also good for novelists, scriptwriters, and other people who need to create a fictional land for any reason. Now, this product contains several files. The first file I opened was the "Form Fill" version, which is basically a shorter version of the main content that can be edited on your computer. (You'll probably want to create a duplicate of the file first, of course.) This is essentially a 57-page notebook that you can fill out and reference as-needed, even going as far as to print it out and reference it at a table or give to your players so they can know more about the world. A do-it-yourself campaign setting...

BattleTech: A Time of War: Quick-Start Rules (Free RPG Day 2013)

BattleTech: A Time of War: Quick-Start Rules (Free RPG Day 2013) A Time of War is Catalyst Game Lab's attempt at bringing the Battletech Universe to an Role Playing Game format. This product in particular is the "quick start" free rules that give you a mission, some characters, and off you go. Overall these types of releases (there are three total overall, each with a different mission) give players a small taste of what to expect from the game's rules. The game's engine runs on simple two (or three) dice with six sides, similar to the Battletech Total Warfare or Alpha Strike ruleset. The mission is simple. The characters are low power enough to be normal "thug" NPCs for a regular 5,000 XP created character. The equipment is already assigned to a character, so there's no real "shopping" you need to do. As a strength, this is where the releases go right. Here's your sheets, a mission, just sit down and play. Apparently these Quick Start Rules for AToW are missions used as a "starter" mission for bigger campaigns down the road that you make...

Urban Dressing: Marsh Town

Verlag: Raging Swan Press
Hinzugefügt am: 08/22/2016 08:20:52
Urban Dressing: Marsh Town An Endzeitgeist.com review This installment of what I'd tentatively call the "new" Urban Dressing-series clocks in at 13 pages, 1 page front cover, 1 page editorial/ToC, 1 page SRD, 2 pages of advertisement, 1 page back cover, leaving us with 7 pages of content, so let's take a look! We take a step on the soggy soil of a town in a ague-infested stretch of land -and as we do so, we look at a 100-entry strong table that tells us exactly what we can see and hear: From the dark, we may see red, bulbous eyes watching us, as frogs lend their cacophony to the dismal creaking evoked by the dilapidated state of the town. Boardwalks show signs of charring, speaking unheard tales of strange rites or punishments, as strands of thorny vines seem to move of their own accord just at the edge of one's vision. Sagging willow trees filter the light of the sun falling through the curtain of branches, as enormous lizards lounge and bask atop piles of rotten wood and townsfolk, under their ste...

The Sighted Seeker An Endzeitgeist.com review This prestige archetype clocks in at 13 pages, 1 page front cover, 1 page SRD, leaving us with 11 pages of content, so let's take a look! Wait, prestige archetype? Well, yeah. In case you're not familiar with the concept, check out my page and a tag/quick search away, you'll get all the reviews for them. Concept-wise, the idea is to basically roll a PrC's features into a core class, making it more akin to an archetype/variant class. Originally invented by Carl Cramér for Purple Duck Games, this concept has been pretty intriguing...so let's take a look at whether it translates well to the psionic context! The sighted seeker as presented herein is based on the PrC of the same name and utilizes the chassis of ranger and marksman as basis. The class gets d10 HD, full BAB-progression, good Ref- and Will-saves and begins with 1 power point, scaling up to 99 at 20th level. Powers known-wise, we begin with 1 and scale that up to 13 at 20th level; the max...

Knowledge Check: Last Rites An Endzeitgeist.com review This installment of the Knowledge Check-series clocks in at 32 pages, 1 page front cover, 1 page editorial, 1 page ToC, 1 page SRD, 1 page back cover, leaving us with 28 pages of content, so let's take a look! After an introduction to what we'll find within these pages for both players and GMs alike, the first chapter of this book deals with the particulars of death itself: From pallor mortis to algor mortis to post-mortem spasms, this section provides neat information that will prove to be useful, in particular when conducting in-game autopsies and first glimpse assessments, with sensible tie-ins to the art of necromancy featuring among them to account for the dimension of the fantastic. Similarly, different components pertaining the rites of passing, for both living and dead, are covered - viewing and public display, oratories on the deceased person's life, music and wakes, colors and superstitions - there is a lot to take into account when des...

The Geis Knight: New Class For Dungeon World

The Geis Knight: New Class For Dungeon World Pleb Publishing have a lot of interesting looking playbooks, but the lack of previews and detailed reviews have always deterred me from checking them out. I bought the Geis Knight, and it certainly does explain the lack of previews. The concept is great and really cool, but the moves are all over the place. The starting moves are a variant of the Paladin's move "Quest", which is pretty good. Their other move is one that only triggers on a 12+ on Volley or Hack and Slash, allowing you to add extra effects to your attacks. There is a race move that allows you to Hack and Slash with INT, but these are still two starting moves using different stats. I bring this up because it gets worse. The list of 2-5 moves have among them four moves that roll INT, WIS, CON, CHA, respectively. There is another similar list of moves within the 6-10 list. Adding to that the Starting moves that require 12+ on Volley or Hack and Slash, you've got five or six different stats the playbook is based on. Beyond...

Better Angels: No Soul Left Behind Ok, I'll admit I backed this Kickstarter just on the strength of it being done by one of the RPPR guys (excellent podcast!), and it being a campaign for a game by the awesome Greg Stolze didn't hurt. I received the book some time ago, but only now got around to reading it. Wow. Just... wow. I read a lot of rpg stuff, and this is the best thing I've read in a long, long while. It's a cynically hilarious take on modern (U.S.) high school education, and it shows that it's written by a real-life teacher -- there is a ton of darkly humorous material here about the realities of meager budgets, political backstabbing, and burned-out teachers. However, it's not nihilistic -- quite the opposite. The general theme is making a difference (however small) and the possibilities for redemption in a world where doing the right thing isn't usually all that easy. The book is giggle-inducingly funny, poking fun at pretty much everything, and the amazing this is that in addition to being a fantastic re...

Exalted 3rd Edition
von Alexandre C.
Verlag: Onyx Path Publishing
Hinzugefügt am: 08/21/2016 19:00:27
Exalted 3rd Edition It's basically excellent, just like about anything Onyx Path has been publishing those last years. Here are the things I prefer : 1. The combat system is fantastic. It works, it is balanced, and it is totally suited to the sort of cinematic gameplay Exalted should be. The first edition tried to adapt the WoD combat system into a cinematic system, it partly worked because overall it is a really neat and versatile system, but still it generated a lot of issues because it was designed with different goals and constraints. The second edition tried to fix those issues through more rules; the result was more balanced but quite bloated and not very usable. This third edition has a completely different system. The weathering/decisive attack distinction is really great and appeals to anyone who ever saw an action movie or anime, while preserving the general structure of the simple and efficient WoD game system. It's just brilliant. 2. The moral/ethics part of the game has been reworked to ...

Blades in the Dark, Digital Edition Early Access We have just begun our first campaign in Blades in the Dark. We normally play more D&D(ish) type games that are very heavy on rules, dice rolls, and having every detail of the world already in place. In those cases I have always chosen to have someone else run the campaign, someone who is more of a rules lawyer and likely to remember every tiny little detail that applies to each and every situation. I LOVE the face that Blades in the Dark is based more upon the story and narrative than it is upon rules and regulations. There is enough information given on the world to be used comfortably (should you choose to do so), but also so much left open to the imagination. As I have a great love of story telling and was incredibly impressed with the potential that I saw in this game, I knew that I not only had to have it...but also that, for the first time in over ten year....I wanted to be the one to run the game. I have banned the rules lawyers from my game (there are one or two th...

Battle Maps APOCALYPSE: Wasteland Ruins II This product would be good if the resolution was higher for Virtual Table Top and if it was gridless. Virtual Table Top software doesn't need grids because it provides one. Also, for people who play GURPS (Like me) the squares get in the way of hex play. I hope the publisher corrects this.
