d66 Compendium

d66 Compendium I purchased the Compendium 2 first. I really liked it, so I figured I should return and pick up the original. I have not been disappointed. It too is filled with lots of great d66 charts. But to be honest it also is a gold mine of great ideas. Just looking over some of the lists causes ideas to spring up in my mind. Not just a great place to randomly select a name, but to look at a name and begin to build out who or what it is. I have had fun just reading various entries and charts. I strongly encourage any GM to pick both this compendium and the 2nd one as well. They are both great additions to my collection and will be very helpful resources in my creative efforts....

Fantasy Map Making - a step-by-step guide for worldbuilders

Fantasy Map Making - a step-by-step guide for worldbuilders This booklet is clearly aimed at beginning fantasy writers and amateur cartographers, but it still has several tips and tricks for making your maps look more authentic, regardless of skill level. I discovered that I had been drawing my rivers incorrectly (or at least unrealistically) even though I’m a veteran fantasy illustrator. This booklet covers how rivers actually behave in relation to their environment. I also found the terraforming chapter useful in that it described how plate tectonics can effect mountain formation and weather patterns. The real value of the text is that it helps you determine the true scope of your map project before you even start sketching. What is a reasonable scale for your continents and nations? How far could people travel on foot or by cart in the middle ages? This booklet will get you thinking about how to make your maps more convincing, without overwhelming you with too much technical detail in the process. It’s definitely a handy resource fo...

Rogue Planet I used to be a big wargammer. I fell out of the hobby for the last 7-10 years. But I have to say, something drew me in about this game when I saw it as the Deal of the Day. The art is compelling, the layout is great, and the rules seem like they'd make for some great RPG-like scenarios to provide. It's definitely a fun read. I don't know if I'll get it to the table, but the purchase was worth it

Castles & Crusades Expanding Classes

Castles & Crusades Expanding Classes Originally published at: http://diehardgamefan.com/2016/08/15/tabletop-review-castles-
-crusades-expanding-classes/ Expanding Classes is one of three new releases for Castles and CrusadesExpanding Classes is pure character creation/stats/crunch. This twenty-six page PDF (that count includes cover, title pages and the legal mumbo-jumbo) tackles something that, surprisingly, hasn’t been fully covered in Castles & Crusades after all this time. I’m talking about multiclassing and dual-classing. For a game so steeped in OD&D, one would think this would have been covered by now. In fact, it hasn’t. There is less than page on the topic in the Player’s Handbook Now, that isn’t to say people haven’t been doing these things in their game. They’ve just been using 1/2e AD&D rules to do so. Now though, we finally have a short (but expensive) supplement for these rules and more. So let’s talk about the five options that you have here in Expanding Classes: 1) Multi-Classing. This is where, ins...

The Golden D6 #5

The Golden D6 #5 Originally published at: http://diehardgamefan.com/2016/08/15/the-golden-d6-issue-5/ -
I go through phases with my hobbies. I tend to cycle between video games, pen and paper RPGs and miniature wargaming as my activities of choice. Currently I’m on miniatures (primarily Warhammer and Batman Miniature Game. However, it’s hard to find a good magazine on the subject. Sure, there are countless mediocre blogs that are mostly fanboy fapping without any shred of understanding journalism, but that’s 2016 for you. There are two UK based tabletop gaming magazines, but again, there is very little quality content in either. It’s mostly just “I LIKE THIS GAME AND SO SHOULD YOU.” Occasionally they have a good how-to article or an actual in-depth look at a system’s rules, but these are rare rather than the norm. So imagine my surprise when I found a DriveThruRPG review request for this magazine I had never heard of entitled The Golden d6. It turned out to be an Australian based miniature gaming maga...

PHBR4 The Complete Wizard's Handbook (2e)

PHBR4 The Complete Wizard's Handbook (2e) This is a good scan of the product. The text is clear, and I cannot see any evidence of anti-aliasing or blurring of the letters when zoomed in. These two PDFs work fine on my old, underpowered tablet, zoomed in on my phone, and on my Kindle (not all PDFs sold here load quickly and work properly on these three devices). The bookmarks are well done.

Player's Handbook (3.5) This PDF has severe problems - it loads very slowly on my phone, fails to load on my tablet, and crashed my Kindle. By comparison, the much-larger Rules Cyclopedia PDF loads quickly and reads fine on all three devices. On my phone, which can display the PDF albeit slowly, each page takes nearly a minute to change. I think this is because of the way the graphics are packaged and loaded, but that is just a guess.

Player's Handbook, Revised (2e) This is a well-done modern PDF, with bookmarks, clear text and good art. I prefer the first printing to this later release, but that is probably 90% nostalgia. This PDF seems to have severe problems - it loads very slowly on my phone, takes 10 minutes or so to load on my tablet, and crashed my Kindle. By comparison, the much-larger Rules Cyclopedia PDF loads quickly and reads fine on all three devices.

X8: Drums on Fire Mountain (Basic) X8 is the first D&D module I remember reading as a kid. It is a fun adventure, the plot is very much like playing through a classic James Bond movie only with D&D rules and weapons. I have been waitng years for this scan, as it was not one of the ones sold during the last PDF run. Unfortunately, the scan is bad - the text is blurry and challenging to read on my tablet, phone and Kindle. I wish I could give this module a higher rating, as it is one I wish everyone had the chance to read and play....
