For the past few days I have soloed my way through Shadowrun Quick Start Rules Free RPG Day 2012. It is available for free at DriveThruRPG. There are 18 pages of rules, but it really does not contain everything you need. I used Black Hack to play it and the Mythic Game Master Emulator to solo it. The short adventure (6 pages) is for a Game Master and several player characters. Four characters are provided and I used them plus two more. During the first scene my hacker died. Scene two I hired another one. During scene three I was contacted to do another mission (Shadowrun Chasin' the Wind - 35 pages). Actually, it ends up being a total of three missions. My favorite scene was when my characters walked into a pizza joint to meet a contact. They saw two ghouls coming out with two pigs they had stolen from the back of the restaurant. My characters started a big battle, killed the ghouls, rescued the pigs, and trashed the restaurant. They were then banned from the restaurant. It was a nice place, a bit out of the way. During the evening was when I had the biggest surprise. We were sleeping in an office in a lab building. Someone bumped a trash can on the way to the washroom and out jumped an Amazonian Spider Beast. Yes, more gun fire and the nasty thing managed to escape. They did complete all of the missions. Your turn . . .

Good primer to see basic mechanics of the game and possibly determine if it may be something that interests you and your gaming group.

I'm an experienced Shadowrun GM who used this as a one-shot introduction for new players to the game. I would normally use Food Fight, but this was a great change and it gave me allowed me to segue into a modified On the Run campaign mission for my new group. I hope that Catalyst will keep releasing these kinds of products every year or two as when you're down a player or two, it gives GM's a small run or story to keep your campaign momentum going.

This particular product was well scanned and a great concise resource as it related to what it was advertised as. Definetly a good investment for those who are looking for an introduction to the Shadowrun world.

Bottom line up front: It is a shame that an otherwise good looking product should be marred by such horrible inattention to detail. Pretty much unusable by anyone that doesn't have the actual core rules.

Great production values and great art. I used to play the game in 1st and 2nd editions. I got the quick start rules hoping I could run a game with my kids to see how they'd like it.

Ouch. There were the typical typos etc so I am not judgmental about this, this is a free product after all. However, I do want to be able to use magic. The document is 37 pages long. Three pages are devoted to the Awakened World and Magic. On page 14 it says the following twice... "the Combat Mage’s spells and descriptions are listed directly on the Character Record Sheet (in the middle of the booklet)." In the booklet the Combat Mage morphs into a Street Shaman. The spells names are listed, but there is no more information beyond that. Pretty much I used up a good hour or two of my time reading a document that I can't use.

It's not just the Combat Mage that gets this treatment. In the rules the Street Samurai is listed as having 3 Initiative passes (and it says he is the only character with multiple passes). On the character sheet it only lists one (I have to guess that Enhanced Reflexes 2 provides additional passes). The Combat Adept's page says she has 2 Initiative passes so I guess the rules were wrong and there is more than one character with multiple passes?

It is a shame that an otherwise good looking product should be marred by such horrible inattention to detail. Pretty much unusable by anyone that doesn't have the actual core rules.
