A previous reviewer said it all:

(though I believe this book deserves 5 very enthusiastic stars)

This article discusses the two source books "Design Manual" and "Planetology" for SciFi20, the D20 OGL version of Traveller.

Appearance The well-known layout of the Players Guide Book can be found here again. Again, the cover of Bryan Gibson and during Planetology is introduced by a very atmospheric drawing an alien planet, is the design manual, how could it be otherwise, seeing a blueprint of a production plan.

The content is again in black / white, broken up by artwork and tables, everything as it was, so to speak. I like it when books are all of a piece and the layout is known.

The hard facts:

• SciFi 20 Design Manual • Format: pdf • Pages: 56 • Publisher: QuikLink Interactive, Inc. • Language: English • Price: U.S. $ 8 (about 5.80 EUR)

• SciFi20 Planetology • Format: pdf • Pages: 32 • Publisher: QuikLink Interactive, Inc. • Language: English • Price: U.S. $ 8 (about 5.80 EUR)

The Design Manual is a toolkit, not more no less. On the three areas of computers, vehicles (all types) and ultimately spaceships (from small shuttles to massive battleships) we find even after multiple Consider all you can play obstruct relevant material in a device.

When the computers are of course their computing capacity, intelligence, versatility and abstraction in the foreground, but also the unit's portability and the cost will not be forgotten. Significant here are the capabilities of the machine to be able to react to unforeseen situations in the program routines.

In the area of the vehicle, the book gives us some more tools at hand, because in addition to four-wheeled vehicles, the book covers ground as motorcycles, gliders, ATVs, aircraft, and Unterseebooote. Here are components such as chassis, drive, energy efficiency, but also armor, weaponry and comfort is important.

The largest chapter is ultimately about the design of spacecraft. Because there are so many possible applications, the authors endeavor to give the reader a most comprehensive tool kit at hand, which also includes various technology development stage. Electronics such as sensors, communications equipment, ship's AI, agility, hangars, yes or no, armament, propulsion, crew sections and and and and - the wealth of opportunity is huge.

The book is a typical sandbox, with the motto "Do what you want, here are the tools that the rest You're doing". Too bad I do not think that at least one design example is given. It is good that the whole round of construction nor the finances be ignored, because it is in the creation of ships you will find a separate paragraph on the financing of such a pot. Of course, affect all the values SciFi20 rules.

Planetology is more sandbox than the book before, because it aims to produce not only a stellar system, but also to individual planets. During the first few pages go to the solar system and the physics of stars, good deal three-fifths of the book a planet itself.

Not only land mass and atmosphere is offered as a way of creation, but also rotational axes inclination, so that the impact on the seasons and much more. Detail it is in the flora and fauna of the planet. What kind of life are there? Where is it found? How far is it developed? Did it perhaps cities, even spaceports? As the creatures are there rules? Democratic? Tyrannical? If so, how much? And what is the law? How far is the advance of technology? Are there trade routes? Galactic or intergalactic about even?

As a refresher, and to not scroll, we find under those options is a list of environmental influences on character - driven like fire, drowning, snowstorms et al are discussed in this chapter

The last, not small area of the book deals with the creatures that can appear on a planet. Food cycles, shape, habitat and behavior are highlighted, as well as the possible physical form of nature (along with their natural weaponry)

In short - all the tools you need in my opinion for a new world, there is in this book. Particularly advantageous, I feel that given the proximity to the rules SciFi20 weak, this book, then, to use for all sorts of science fiction systems.

Value for money Just under 6 EUR for the books I find that excellent tool boxes are not too expensive. But what I do not understand is, why? The player Guidebook, which is much more comprehensive with 128 pages, a little over 1 EUR cheaper Neither the layout, look, there are still differences.

Conclusion Both books are good collections to the creation of proprietary technology and worlds and thus excellent sandbox tools. I myself have been playing with the possibilities, and just when the planet came out copies, I would have never thought of me as yourself, but they are quite interesting.
