Classic Modules Today: T1-4 Temple of Elemental Evil (5e)

Formatting

While the formatting has an aesthetic goal, it misses the readability mark. Bodoni MT Black is a decorative font highly unsuitable for headlines and leads.

Layout

The layout between sections varies widely. The cramming of far too much information in the reference pages—aschewing all whitespace and using Bodoni MT Black again—piles on the formatting problems. Additionally, the page numbers are wildly off mark and restart or are left off. Where rooms have numerous items, long strings of italicized items, comma and semi-colon delimited, are used versus lists. This in part ties back to the extreme lack of whitespace.

Opportunities
  1. Move all reference sheets to the end. It is unnecessary to append them to each section.
  2. More whitespace.
  3. More lists.
  4. Consider also complete redo, but first read https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/168306/A-Brief-Study-of-TSR-Book-Design. It's free even.
  5. Fix the headers for each section/part; the header is missing on a number of pages
  6. Fix the page numbers.

X9 The Savage Coast (Basic)
Publisher: Wizards of the Coast
by Timothy S. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 08/17/2016 11:29:20

This title is the one I've been waiting to drop for far too long. I consider it one of those BEMCI modules that were part of my "formative years" admist the Satanic Panic of the 80s.

A great scan. While in the intervening decades since I first purchase this in High School, much of the criticism about X9's "slog through the wilderness" I find to be tempered by the setting X9 develops.

Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 2nd Edition: Renegade Crowns

One of my favorite titles for campaign building in the Old World of WFRP. Easily extendable to other systems when used as a guide to developing a region for exploration and more. I'm currently running a campaign in a Renegade Crown developed completely from this book.

Tales from the Ninth World
Publisher: Monte Cook Games
by Timothy S. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 08/16/2013 12:34:27

In purchasing Numenera, the setting was so broadly defined, I wanted to go to the source for ideas. I highly recommend these three short stories to help define just what can be done with the setting. If I could define an "Appendix N" for Numenera, this would top the list, if only for the author credits so closely linked with the game. But I would add Fritz Leiber and Jack Vance.

Numenera Player's Guide
Publisher: Monte Cook Games
by Timothy S. [Verified Purchaser]

A great companion product for players, but for the hardcover price. This book summarizes all the character tiers, decriptors, types, and focuses and provides setting detail for the table.

I recommend the PDF, but having a hardcover copy at the table has all upside for your players that want a tactile reference.

Numenera
Publisher: Monte Cook Games
by Timothy S. [Verified Purchaser]

Very impressed. In my initial read though I see significant influences from Monte Cook's entire gaming history and modern story innovations like Fate's aspects and compel mechanics. There is a lot of room for expansion in character paths and advancement. The world is detailed.

However, in all of this, the setting can seem overwhelming as it can be almost anything the GM wants it to be, especially if you like Vance's Dying Earth. The numenera, as lost tech found by those that con only hack or repurpose it, feels both Vancian and post-apocolyptic, without being either.

I'm looking forward to digesting the mechanics!

D&D Rules Cyclopedia (Basic)
Publisher: Wizards of the Coast
by Timothy S. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 07/02/2013 10:14:40

Few games and rulesets capture my imagination like BECMI (B/X)--Twilight:2000 and Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 1E/2E being the others). The D&D Rules Cyclopedia is something I've owned in a electronic bootleg form for years as actually purchasing it was impossible.

Indexed, searchable, and in color, i.e., Appendix 1, The D&D Game World. A must have document for your early D&D collection.

This PDF release is exactly what an old gamer and grognard like myself needs to pick up a game of D&D again using a single reference. The price point is perfect. Thank you WotC for the e-release of this important work.

Justin hit a "full blooded" home run (mixing Cricket and Baseball slang, I know) with tone for Hero Kids in the creative direction. These "iconics" for Hero Kids are a perfect example. My daughter and I brokeout the crayons as soon as they were printed!

Dicey Tales #1
Publisher: Dicey Tales Productions
by Timothy S. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 06/17/2011 15:09:30

Full Disclosure: I have some bias, having helped with the editing of Issue #1. However, bias aside, The Evil DM, a.k.a. Jeff, has hit a homerun with Dicey Tales #1.

DT #1 exudes pulpy goodness. The expanded boons and flaws just add icing. The Evil DM is expanding support for Dicey Tales too with a blog and forum, bulding a community along the release. If you liked Barbarians of Lemuria, or just like rules light systems, I can recommend Dicey Tales!
