I ran this at at local RPG convention are it went over fantastically. It's a good story, but a really good selection of PCs makes this module, I've even used them for other games ratehr than make my own!

Being a fan of the Dresdenverse, I have enjoyed this adventure and felt like it fit into the "feeling" of Jim Butcher's world. Easy to read and it ran fairly quickly with the players enjoying the session. No issues with the adventure, but at the time we were new the mechanics of the rules and it took us a bit to get the hang of the part.

great beginner level casefile.

read through it right out of the download and immediately started planning a session with my team. Had to reset it in Montreal, but that wasn't too hard. Was totally fun to run through it.

As mentioned, this is a really good introductory adventure. It sets the mood nicely for a Dresden Files campaign, and shows the players what's in store for them: a mix of the supernatural and the mundane, and plenty of bloodshed. Plus, it's free! You can't go wrong with this- or the Dresden Files rpg in general, though I prefer the new streamlined Fate Core system. Supposedly they're releasing an updated Dresden Files game with the new Core rules, and I can't wait for that!

This is one of the first sessions I ran of DFRPG. Was a great way to start, and get into the setting quickly. The base characters had room for customization, appealing to new and seasoned players. Well done.

This is a very nice little introductory adventure, and I used it to start my campaign. It is set in the Baltimore in the back of the "Your Story" Dresden RPG book, and features an NPC who is, this being Dresden, in very serious trouble. It contains seven PCs if you want to use them, but can be run nicely with whatever characters you have, including characters the players just created.

The adventure has three scenes to it: the scene of the crime (two dead baristas, one missing person), the search (which parties who have somebody who can use ritual magic may just skip, fair warning), and the confrontation.

It will give the players and GM a feel to how a fairly normal Dresden scenario (if there is such a thing) would work.

Great casefile. There is a lot of room for personalizing this casefile to fit your group and to make the experience vary dramatically.

Neutral Grounds is a fun adventure with detailed characters who have built-in relationships and fun antagonists. It's a great con game, I've run it twice with a lot of success. As a free product, this is an unbelievable value. The quality of the adventure and the artwork is top-notch, and they're giving it away. It's also an excellent instruction in adventure design, on how to make a one-shot work really well. You should be downloading this right now.

Ist mir informationstechnisch etwas leicht - hilft halt wirklich nur, wenn man das Hintergrundbuch hat.

It's hard to find fault with a free product, especially one that includes color art and delivers such a well-laid out and written supplement. Adhering to the tenants of the DFRPG, the "adventure" presented is more of a set-up and then a series of suggestions on how things might develop, making it light on railroad and heavy on story potential. That lack of concrete story may rub some readers the wrong way but it's precisely what makes the adventure so interesting to me: You're handed a loaded situation that could go in one of a dozen ways once the PCs get involved.

I used this as a break from the regular DFRPG campaing I'm running. Fun was had by all. As a GM, I really liked the way the introductory questions blend the pre-generated characters into the start of the game.

Wow. Whilst the author notes that this is a 'lightweight write-up' for an adventure, it does offer a great start for a campaign or simply a single night's play. What was refreshing was the acknowledgement by the author that this had been play-tested, and there were relevant and appropriate anecdotal notes from the three times this module had been run by the author. Those notes help to contextualise the scenes and offer some springboards for inspiration.

The plot is very straightforward, but has enough flexibility to become as simple or as complex as the GM wants, and the concepts can be used in any game at all which features magic. As a long-time fan of the Dresden Files novels (and television series) this has been the catalyst for my purchase of the full RPG rules.

What is extremely useful is the section at the beginning dealing with the plot set-up. It offers a series of questions which allow the PCs to co-create the back-story of the module and (if they're feeling lucky) anchor their characters to specific plot points. This represents a greater level of buy-in from the players and this template is something that all GMs should attempt to work into their own games at some point.

The writing is clear and concise, descriptions are succinct and understandable and the scenes are linked in a logical fashion. The sample characters in the back are well-written and engaging and I could see my group turning these into full characters. The NPCs are good (Damocles is a hoot - I could see him in a Dresden novel). The layout of the product is great, from the coffee-mug (and another stranger-shaped cup) stains, cellotaped inserts and other features give this a neat feel. The art is good, and a very suitable choice for this product.

As a free PDF, this is brilliant - I would have no qualms in paying cash for this, and I'll be running it as soon as I get a free weekend.

The first free release for Evil Hat's Dresden Files RPG is here - and let me tell you, it's a doozy.

Clocking in at a hefty 25 pages, Neutral Grounds presents newcomers or fence sitters for DFRPG with a solid, enjoyable offering that could be wrapped up in about 1-2 sessions, depending on the group involved and their familiarity with the FATE system as presented in the Dresden Files RPG. Neutral Grounds is presented as 3 PDF files - a Mac friendly format, the full-color version, and a printer-friendlier file as well.

The writing is highly conversational, which might put off those looking for the bare facts needed to run the adventure. I found Clark Valentine's asides and advice enjoyable and quite tone-setting, along with being in keeping with the in-character style of the DFRPG books. Art in the casefile is provided by Amy Houser and Chad Sergesketter, and provides nice flavor for the scenario - all of the PCs and major NPCs are given the full-color treatment, and the artwork carries a quality that might be best described as the sort of work you'd get from particularly talented street artists, which further reinforces the feel Evil Hat is aiming for in the Baltimore/Nevermore setting.

Neutral Grounds acts as expansion material to the Nevermore setting presented in the Your Story corebook for DFRPG, and provides 7 pre-generated PCs to play. These characters are not, the text notes, fully fleshed out - thus giving players a chance to customize before play or, as recommended, during play, providing a nicely organic customization.

After the basics on the PCs and a few important NPCs, Neutral Grounds provides some guidelines on filling in the Aspects left open, utilizing a series of questions relevant to the scenario at hand, allowing players to further flesh out the provided PCs.

After the initial presentation, the scenario launches into a brief description and setup - the PCs, members of Baltimore's supernatural community, arrive at the titular coffeehouse to find a pair of local college students dead inside. Several clues as to what's happened are presented at the outset, and the author takes care to advise on setting the scene and mood using small but important details - the shop's bookshelves in disarray, bullet holes in the walls. There's a twist in the opening scene that leads to some action along with the investigation as well.

Act 2 of the casefile heads back into investigative territory, and, as the author puts it "could go any which way." Several options are presented for the PCs to follow up on, and, depending on the group and GM, the antagonist can be swapped out. Red herrings abound, and the danger steadily ratchets up for the PCs, though it's left entirely up to the GM's devices how the group is led to the bad guy and the scheme behind the events in the adventure.

Act 3 follows on from the consequences of the prior Act in the adventure, leading up to a final confrontation with the antagonist responsible for all of the mayhem and mystery. Suggestions for Aspects on the scene are offered, though spare; the Act assumes quite a bit of improvisational ability on the GM's part.

If Neutral Grounds has a weakness, it's a personal quibble I have - the actual scenario is about 3 pages long, with little details as to how things should go, instead relying on the GM and players to fully guide the scenario. While this might seem a fault with the adventure, the fully-fleshed NPC and PCs provide ample opportunity for an enthusiastic group to springboard from. Ample advice is provided on playing everyone involved, and there's an occasional humorous shout out given - such as the illustration for a tattooed ghoul on page 9. It's all in good fun, and in keeping with the tone of the Dresden Files RPG and novels.

Overall, this is a strong offering for Evil Hat's first adventure for the DFRPG, and an excellent introduction to the kinds of trouble a diverse group of PC can get up to in the game. It's also an excellent move for Evil Hat to pull in the interested - the adventure could easily go for at least $4-5 in this reviewer's opinion, so the free price tag is icing on an already excellent cake. Highly recommended.
